A lot of the hostility in these forums is caused by poor choices of words, sloppy use of language etc. Basically misunderstandings.

To aggravate this, a significant number of users are not 'American as first language' types. (No problem with that. Many speak better American than I do.)

Note the choice of the word American rather than English. Try communicating with someone from the UK and you will realize that American and English aren't the same any more. There has been considerable diversification in spelling, slang, pronunciation, basically all the important stuff.

I'm a particularly bad offender. I automatically lose all respect for anyone who appears to be American, but doesn't use the language correctly.

I'm not suggesting that anyone change anything, though. Some can't and some won't.

What I am suggesting is that, even if you are very careful with how you say things, you are guaranteed to offend at least one person in these forums.

So what I am suggesting is that everyone keep that in mind in RL as well as in the forums.

I'm not seeing a question, nor an answer.

Most hostility in this forum in particular is against people who choose to rant, give out flat out false information, or bad advice, rather than just ask or answer a question.

I'm sorry, but you are very, very wrong. There may be some differences in the levels of phonology, phonetics, vocabulary, and, to a lesser extent, grammar and orthography, but American English and British English are extremely similar. So much so that they are more akin to a dialect rather than be considered different languages.

I liked the irony inherent in your post though, as what you said and, more importantly, how you said it clearly contradicts the posts intent. I give you 3/10.

Responses like the above are what make me love these forums. A wide variety of outlooks and insights, and I appreciate each one as it deserves. Very Happy

But it wasn't a troll.

I was just trying to explain why one of my characters just got booted from a corp for 'Abuse'. Laughing

Flamers will flame, there are posting alts out there just to do this (and we know them).

Beside of that i donŽt think that it is an american/british english problem. As english is not my native tongue, sometimes i have to look at a translator/dictionary to fully understand whats meant. Though i never had to do this for troll detecting.

Tl;Dr If you aks respectfully, youŽll get proper answers. Not always, but mostly.
