Just finished the Burning Age novel today.

I was expecting the worst based on other reviews I have seen. But honestly, I dont think it was awful. It definitely doesnt read like a stand alone novel like Empyrean Age did. It is more like a novel length Chronicle. Like reading game background material.

Taken on that level it was not bad at all. You get a tour of all the empires and the major pirate factions as well as the Sisters of Eve, all from the perspective of the little people. It explains a lot of the technology, both mundane and exotic. There wasn't a lot of Capsuleer-specific stuff in the novel and I am grateful for that because I want to know more about the setting itself. I like how the game portrays Capsuleers as remote and exotic, and how it meshes well with the game itself. I think this novel contributes a lot to game immersion.

So if you havnt read it yet, I would recommend giving it a try. It is very different from Empyrean Age. And frankly, Empyrean age was better. But I still enjoyed it. 3/5.

I just finished it today and I thought it was pretty good. Not the best book I've ever read but certainly not the worst. I enjoyed reading about the regular people and learning about the capsuleers effects on the average person and life in New Eden.

Empyrean Age was definitely a better read, with a more compelling plot. (And I'll read anything with a zero-G sex scene in it!)

In The Burning Life, it felt like the author was going out of his way to make sure we got a little taste of as many pirate factions as possible. And the two plot lines seemed to converge a little too late in the story.

That said, I didn't regret reading it. It's always fun to see the world we know come alive in a different format. There was some talk of movie rights when Empyrean Age released. I'd faint straight away if that ever came to be. Plus the forum rage over every detail that Hollywood got wrong would be endless fun.

(Edited for punctuation, but only because this is the EVE Fiction forum)
