Hello everyone. I've been pondering over an idea that's been rattling around my head for sometime now. CCP have increased the speed of improvements to EVE Online which is fantastic, and I have a suggestion for the Devs and the EVE community.

My Idea:
Whenever you buy a new ship, the moment you assemble it, you're required to place a crew inside it. The more crew is needed as your ship class is bigger. Once your assembled and crewed ship is ready to, you have the choice of PVE or PVP. Your crew could have a base level of ZERO(which would be equivalent of what ships are in eve right now).
As this level (lets call it experience) goes up, the ships overall hit points, weapon stats, ammo effectiveness, speed, capacitor efficiency etc are improved. Only very slightly per level. Perhaps to a final level of 100 experience which would improve all aspects of your ship by a total of 20 percent?
To level up your crew's experience, killing npc ships should be similar to the standings increase system but you would have to kill A LOT of npcs to gain each level (also mining barges could level up through mining). That way, those people who run missions all day, would actually take a while to get their experience up.
If you kill someone through pvp, then the increase could be more substantial.
Each level could be harder to get to...similar to leveling up in wow (and no I dont play that homo game).

Anyway, im sure you could expand on this idea a lot more. I wouldnt be surprised if someone else has proposed this already. What do you guys think?

Then why are you suggesting similar mechanics?

I think that grinding mechanics has no place in this game.

RClick→Train the crew to give bonuses in one specific area at a time, passively, and just like skills, and if the ship gets destroyed, the crew and its bonuses are lost.

Just because there would be a leveling system for your crew doesnt mean its like wow. EVE is still completely different.
And dont look at it as a grind. Some people could not even worry about having to level their crew. At level zero, your ship would be at its base stats exactly the same as they are now in the current build. I just think if you happen to have your ship long enough, surviving many pvp and npc battles, that your crew should be slightly better...overall reflecting on your ships performance.

Look just because there is a crew onboard doesn't mean I want anything to do with them.

As far as I'm concerned the little bastards didn't work hard enough and that's why my ship exploded (and not that I drove it in to a star whilst snorting a line of mindflood the length of Jita).

Space the lot of them, not my fault they're not immortal is it?

And why should I care about someone who isn't immortal?

Does that mean that if I recruit a few elite veteran navigators my ship won't bump into collidable objects anymore, or not more than once?? Very Happy

This idea has been presented dozens upon dozens of time.
It doesn't make sense from an RP point of view, eve ships have basically no crew on them, all the crew on EVE does is shovel coal into the metaphorical furnace. The pod pilot completely replaces the traditional crew on a starship

As for this particular iteration of the idea, 20% bonus to all those stats is massively overpowered.

as Devil's Advocate: If this idea where to be brought in at all, 5% bonus tops, and it should take a looooooong time to get the bonus. Make it five lvls like skills, with the same increments between lvl's that skills have.
You'd need to measure each stat individually, ie fire your guns once, get 1 point in your dmg lvl. Get shield damage and get 1 point in shield lvl. Armour dmg etc etc.

Overall, though, I don't think the game needs it

20% is the difference between having your skills at level 1 and having them at level 5.
No thanks i don't want to have some mandatory grind before i can reasonably use a ship.

To be honest, I think this would be kinda cool. And you could trade crew sets between people. So you could have like minmatar cruiser crews, minmatar BS crews etc. Levelled up and traded.

Thing is, you gotta make it so it counts, but not by such a factor that it becomes mandatory. As it stands, things like rigs, are for the most part now essential.

You'd have to make it something like WHEN MAXED OUT, a crew would get at the most 3% ROF, 3% cap recharge, 3% Speed etc. Basically just like a medium level implant. None of this 20% nonsense. Lots of little increases over a wide range of systems, and that's it. Nothing that someone could probably implant their way into anyway.


If you make it so it's only a small increase in ability, you basically take away much of the grind element. If it's not going to give you such a massive advantage, then there is not grind in making the crew better from just flying about and shooting rats/people every now and then. To me it would be more of a fun thing to try and keep the same crew alive, but nothing I would stress too much about.

Being sensible for a second, the main problem with ship crew is CCP themselves. They want the game to be about the pod pilot (i.e. us) and not the little people (i.e. NPC's).

If you yomp around youtube for the old fanfest recordings someone actually put ship crew to T0rfins (sp?) and he said "No".

That and I'm not sure I like the idea of having yet another step and additional time required to be 'good' at flying a specific ship, ship class or race of ships.

Thus encouraging risk aversive (aka boring/PVE/blobbing) activity, and giving older players an even greater advantage over newer players (Don't have to replace ships as often, hence your crew would "level" up more). This is just a bad idea.

No, its goes against the lore of eve.

Its in the evelopedia even.

It plainly states that the way a pod pilot can control and move a ship would kill the crew on board because the pod pilot doesn't have to worry about G-forces and getting thrown around.

Would also save space and weight on not having a means of gravity and air to breathe.

Ill see if I can find the page in the wiki.

Edit, I forgot where I found it, but I did find this.
Its some where in the gal/cal war.

Frigates: In the Gal/Cal war, it was specifically mentioned in the lore that thanks to pod technology, the Calderi were able to dramatically increase their effectiveness because their frigates could be manned by one man ( a pod pilot ) instead of a crew of 3-5 (Pilot, Gunner, Systems Op, Engineer, etc). I think it can be safely assumed that all modern Frigates are one man operations, and definitely anything above tech I.

Capsuleers don't need crews. Though it is rather tempting to have some personal slaves in cages...

I do think that the crew and leveling up idea is kind of good. I thought of it before and have found llogical explanations for the idea. I am also pretty nice, so I never object against an idea unless I find it REALLY stupid.

On a related note, I wonder why CCP got rid of the ability to change your stats while creating your character...

the 20 percent figure was just a rough number. 5 percent would be cool even...but just so you know, it wouldnt have to be a mad grind fest. but more...if youve got a random ship that youve used quite often in pvp or pve and it hasnt died, you might notice a slight increase in performance. its an idea that can be altered to suit everyone in my opinion.

it goes against that ships piloted by pod pilots do not have any crew, at least according to the backstory of eve.
However ships that do not have a pod pilot have a full crew.

There is no reason to think a ship fitted for a pod pilot could not have a totally automated system, hence the need for skills to improve the guns/missles or what ever.

Stories are told of pod pilot heroes flying on the side of the Caldari during the twilight years of the Gallente-Caldari war, executing maneuvers unthinkable to those encumbered with a full crew complement and the bothersome necessity of using vocal commands and hand-eye coordination to steer their vessels.

According to the backstory, even pod-piloted ships have a crew — just a much smaller one than ships piloted the regular way.

If you read the backstory it becomes apparent that yes, we may have crews, but pod pilots care little for the lesser mortals running around on the ships they control. In the chronicles pod pilots are described as god like beings compared to planet siders, who would be the ones acting as their crew. In a pod pilots eyes, so what if a couple of hundred inferiors die, they were going to anyway and the few hundred isk they were paid for their service will exchange to a vast fortune for their planetside families so they got a good deal out of it.

Crews are insignificant and treated like mere tools on the ships they serve on, much like a gun or other piece of equipment. You don't cry that much, generally, when a module gets destroyed when you're ship blows up, you worry even less about the souls lost in the explosion.

What I want to know is can we by pass the need for all the crew if we man the ship with a bunch of players? lol

Too easily exploitable. Here's a scenario:

DPS ship with T1 ammo to burn, tank ship with high resists, cap stable Logi ship (all friends).

All fly to safe spot, DPS ship shoots Tank while Logi reps Tank.

DPS gains "Über Pew" crew levels, Tank gains "Über hardnut" crew levels, Logi gains "Über Rep" crew levels, all because it is vs players not NPCs.

Although if you could trade crews, it would create a new mini profession - crew trainer...

In PvP people lose their ship far too often for this to make sense. That game mechanic would be better suited for a PvE-centric game, which Eve isn't.
It's unlikely the Devs will implement something like this basically for mission runners, and bots, but of course you can still ask them to do it.

Erm.. btw a 20% bonus isn't a 'slight' bonus. There are more than enough stacked bonuses in Eve already. Another 20% would make balance even harder to achieve.

its already been established that 20 percent is too high. like i said earlier, it was just a random number. 5 percent would be more realistic as max level. and it doesnt have to be a pve grind. my idea was that its something you forget about and maybe check on it every once in a while if your ship hasnt died.

Also, why do ships have windows and lights if its just the capsuleer flying them?
