Ok here is my idea.

When you probe out a gravametric site you get a big asteroid and instead of just clicking on it and turning you're mining laser on then rolling your tongue into the back of your throat, you instead start whittling away at the roid chipping away at the outer layers maybe finding a vein of a valuable material then you start digging deeper and deeper finding more and more voluble ore as you go in.

Now this would probably only work for scanned out gravametric sites not belt roids and I think personally ideally the materials you get from it should be smaller then current unprocessed ore as to make this more of a one person job then current minings minimum of 2.

I kind of like this idea. Another would be to use lasers to blast away the outer rock until you find nodules of ore. That ore would then be tractored out using a tractor beam and stored in the cargo bay.

There would be no boring cycle time but rather time spent carefully shooting the lose rock with your special mining laser. Capturing the nodule would be similar to grabbing a jetcan. The only security measure would be that only the mining ship or a fleet mate connected to it could detect the nodule before it is extracted.

If the targeting system required you to carefully aim your lasers by color or texture of the rock it would be much harder for bots to do it as well.

Well my idea as i see it the roid would be made up of sort of a lattice network and you zap one point and you take a little piece of it away and you get a certain kind of mineral for your efforts with each piece

I rly like minning the way it is. It allows me to do other stuff like important IRL stuf like homework while I'm playing eve.

Thats why I specifically said "Now this would probably only work for scanned out gravametric sites not belt roids"

Mining needs a total overhaul. Minecraft is certainly a great inspiration of the direction that mining in Eve should go. I just don't think you have quite nailed it.

What if you could still have that and mining changed? Wink

Ok thanks that clarifies stuffs. sound not bad idea.

anyhow, we have minning turrets and mining drones, I think it's about time they gave us a mining missile. I could fire them at an asteroid until a chunk breaks off, which has a cargo icon... I could then fly to it, and scoop the ore =D

then I could go minning in drake too, just like in all the other batlecrusers.

It's interesting you bring this topic up just now and with the minecraft reference, because yesterday I talked about that exact same thing with a fellow gamer.

Now before everything gets mixed up and confused about 'fun', 'meaningful' etc., I'd like to point out why 'mining' in Minecraft is more fun and what the difference to mining in Eve is.

First, in Minecraft you 'mine' to achieve something. You're working towards building something. Directly.
While achieving (more ISK) and building (modules/ships) could be debated, the last aspect:'directly' is a lot more accentuated in Minecraft. You can actually see the progress. It feels a lot more rewarding.

Second, and that's probably even more important, you sometimes find cool stuff in Minecraft, like every 100th or so block there might be iron, diamond or a cave.

In Eve there isn't something comparable. You mine, and that's it.
It's like staring at one block in Minecraft and after 5 minutes or so it goes 'poof' and you get 50-100 blocks of stone or dirt, depending on your skills.

If in every 100th-200th Veldspar or whatever roid you would find an Arkonor or Mercoxit vein, wouldn't that be cool?
Wouldn't it be cool to just have 'Asteroids'? No classification, no knowing in advance what's in there? To scan them, to sometimes find valuable stuff in them?

An active scanning system where you as a miner have to evaluate effort and profit with the help of estimated yield and position of veins in an asteroid might be a lot more interesting than the current mining system in Eve. But it might also turn out to be overkill and still a repetetive boring grind. Hard to say, hard to do right. Yet probably worth a try.
Getting rid of classified roids or adding some random finds might also help.
Changing the system to something where actively mining yields far better results than afk or macro mining would of course be great.

if i could build a skull fort in space with lava flowing out the eyes i would totally skill up for mining.

Oh yeah, I should've added "You're working towards building something. Probably something special and unique, instead of building the same stuff for the umpteenth time."

They need to make it more then a point and click. it doesnt need to be incredibly deep and complicated, but even as a mission runner your doing more and paying attention to more then when your cargohold fills like you do when you mine.

But remember, if you make mining more difficult, and people thusly do it less ... everything will get more expensive.

Might take care of macro miners if there was some randomization/micro 'game' to it.

It's called Mine craft because everything is YOURS. It is called MINEcraft for a reason.

As for minin, I am not quite shure how to make it better. Perhaps there could be Aerospace Mining Craft that flew to planets and moons and started mining in Mineral Hotspots. If if you want to find better stuff, you would actually HAVE to go down into the planet's atmosphere and into areas with different types of minerals, and you would have to use Deep Core Mining Tools.

As I've said I think this idea would only work for probed out gravametric sites. It's a good place to start because as of now there is zero reason to even do them and changing them and experimenting with them could go a long way towards improving mining as a whole.
