Has anybody seen any info from any source regarding the fleet formations feature CCP was working on?
I don't usually miss updates from CCP, but this is the most anticipated EVE feature for me and I'd really like to see even a couple of lines posted by CCP on these forums, various interviews, or else.

Hopefully never. I can think of few things worse than enforced positions, reducing the blob IQ requirement to nil - just press f1 when commander says.

And it makes no sense. IRL formations are created for a reason. Giving strange bonuses just because you have 9 people in a wall formation makes no sense when you spacing will be huge, and you are guarding nothing from fire.

In a 3 dimensional space, dealing with great distances and ships capable of crossing this space rapidly, there is no real formations possible except what players already do - logistics behind damage dealers (or sitting on gates), ewar at range. Or people sitting in position to bump etc.

Well that is a straightforward pessimistic look with the prejudicial 'fleet formations means you receive bonuses for being in a certain position' view. I have not seen any piece of information from CCP suggesting that that is the only way they are looking at it. They, and some players, may have better ideas.

Terrible idea. Maneuvering your ship and firing the weapons are the only thing we still GET to do in a proper fleet fight. That would just be another step into turning fleet warfare into an RTS for FC's.

This should be done for the cool factor alone if nothing else.

Fact: ships in formation look cool.

Fact: ships in a blob do not look cool.

Fleet warfare, as it stands now, resembles something like a group of insects swarming over a light source.

No one is saying every pilot has to stay in formation. You could simply break ranks and do your thing, and then return to formation if needed. It's called organization (also it looks cool).

Look at videos and pictures of blob warfare. Just look at them.

Actually, what would be the point of formations, except for the "looking cool" ?

Looking cool has always been big in my book.

If we had proper collision detection, it would've been a great addition. Sadly, we can shoot people that is behind a titan, our missiles can go through asteroids and structures.

Obviously, we can't have those because of performance issues. So there's no point in formations but the cool factor. However, a slight bonus, like leadership bonuses, might be nice addition. That said, forced grouping could become old VERY quick.

unfortunatly i cant see it working eather due to the mechanics of eve, not because of a poor principle due to 3d theres no up down side to side relation (you would bace it on the solar system, star is port and up and down is just agreed baced on another celestrial object or decided on jump).

your thinking that the formations would be based on 2d ship movements on water, or tanks on land. in space, formations would be baced on ships in plains but crossing at angles to put as much firepower on a single point whilst having individual ships being in danger for as short a time as possible. with speed and angle of attack being the deciding factor.
im sorry if thats not clear its a difficult concept to get acrross with out a) pictures b) a threads worth of explaning
Unfortunatly theres nothing in eve that can really support that due to no such thing as firing lines, liquid baced space, ship balancing as it is (sniping ranges etc) and a host of other factors Sad

so basicly spaced baced formations are possible.. tho not in eve.

There are ships in EVE that do not rely on maneuvering for successful combat (battleships* and capitals), so formations wouldn't harm their use in any way, and would introduce the 'cool looking' factor, which IS important to EVE. All those trailers leave us (and those yet to be converted to EVE from other games) in awe because they look epic, and that epicness is in many ways down to massive fleets and organized look of those.

Sub-battleship fleets could do all the maneuvering in combat, and return to the formation afterwards. Not sure what bonus could be given to them to promote that return, but guess somebody whose job it is to form up ideas, and has enough time for that, can come up with some.

* Battleships are sometimes used in maneuverable combat v the capitals, so that would be exception to some degree

This. Right now formations are pointless, and a total waste of developer time imo. There are far more important issues to solve.

If collisions actually meant something other than bumping someone off a gate, then it might be valuable. Combined with collisions, if Fly by Wire controls were implemented (other than mouse clicking) and it meant something/did something, then formations would also be valuable.

Right now, as a player I see no value in formations.

Honestly, if we could get a real switchable 1st person view and joystick control, I'd much rather get in a small fast ship and go on strafing runs than sit in formation. That's what made X-Wing so cool in the 90s.

Even for the more mobile pieces of a fleet that would fly around, it would be awesome to have a "wing-man" feature, where you can attach yourself to a squad leader or something and your ship will follow in a side and back position (all ships in formation would be slowed to lowest speed obviously). All the ships would follow the movement of the leader, but all other activation of modules and controls would have to be executed by the actual pilot.

Basic bonuses could be:

  • Increased lock range - Mainly to compensate for the lack of blob effectiveness

  • Reduced signature radius - Harder to get lock on you when there are tons of other ships in certain formations

  • Remote modules could redesigned to provide more bonuses to formations

  • Slightly increased resists

Basic drawbacks could be:

  • Decreased mobility - Can only move as fast as your slowest ship, cannot stand on top of the gate without any danger

  • More susceptible to aoe warfare such as ECM burst or bombs

There are lots of small stuff that could provide both benefits and negatives for fleet formation.
