I use a netbook to log in to EVE during lunch at work; all I will do is update market order and maybe the skill queue, re-start extractors and kick off production jobs.

All of this I can currently do on said netbook.

Unfortunately, said netbook has crashed and I live in Australia, where our main method of connecting to the internet involves morse code and carrier pigeons. Hence, downloading the full client (including 1+ gig of character creator that I don't need) doesn't really fill me with joy.

Any chance of an EVE Light client, which features as close to zero graphics as possible (or even re-use the pre-Trinity graphics & engine)? I figure it'd have to be a much smaller download and probably have a frame rate above 12FPS.

Selfishness aside, from CCP's perspective, it might also be a good jumping off point for a mobile device client, which could prove a profitable market.

Your netbook will probably be out of action completely soon anyway, since CCP is gonna make Shader Model 3 the minimum supported for gfx cards (and most netbooks don't support this).

It certainly doesn't. Which is another compelling reason for a light client Smile

/fully supported

e.g. the light client could just always show you the starmap or even a black bakground. you can fly and do anything you want just by using the overview.

I wholeheartedly support this idea.
My labtop has a hard time running EVE (cuz it sux) and if the graphic requirements rise just a little bit more it wont be able to run it at all, so a light client would certainly be much appreciated.

No BUY A BETTER LAPTOP. and if your poor GTFO of eve. I bet your still on dial up. Do you have a son called kenny.

Im fed up of game makers that have make sacrifices. and are not able to push graphics and game iders due to people like you !!!
I mean they only just droped the pentium 3 processor from running the game. And they stopped been produced in 2003.

The idea of having a portable, stripped client that would make Eve look like Master of Orion or Elite(C64) but playable
in the basic functions as mentioned by the OP is surely a nice idea, but probably a few years ahead of its time.
When slow little HDD-less netbooks and powerful smartphones are standard and a bit better then today's models, it might be in fact a new gap
in the market. But for now, I don't see a large enough userbase to justify it.

And a little note on the side - a 64k ISDN line is more than enough to play eve on several computers,
with sometimes an even better ping than cable or dsl - so much for the dialup-comment ....

I've heard there's several programs out there that will simulate the EVE client, and allow you to run 8 characters at once. (Read about it on a DEV-blog on bots, translation: don't do it! Cool)

I was thinking Frontier (A500 version) when I wrote the post, actually.

think of running eve on ipod or other smartphone. much stuff would work very well. except fleet ops and pvp probably. but thats only some part of eve...

... a part you may want to play when you get home to your quadcore-4-way-SLI-surround-sound pvp computer... and get the money for that during the day ^^

Another reason for an EVE Light Client:

I have three computers, and on two of them EVE Looks and performs like crap, but on one of them, EVE looks and performs like a God, but it kills that computer after being in space for just 45 seconds. NOW will CCP make an EVE Light Client? Also, back in the older Pre-Trinity days, you didn't need a seperate client and seperate patch to access a different server. Can you return that please?
