Oops, sorry but you should have given character creation more time than going for cheap lols if wanting character to be taken seriously.

I agree with the above and a bit more too...

I'm not strongly against it, but I am against it I would welcome the extra money it would bring into the game, but even with an audit trail on the name change, in the Biography or wherever, it makes it easier for people to escape their naughty (tut tut) deeds. I mean, who the feck reads the bio anyway?

The fact is that this should be allowed as long as a history is kept public to be seen, which would void all the negatives addressed by this proposal.

Many players start this game like any MMO and pick some random name or one they brought from another game and once they've been in EVE awhile and get into the spirit of it, they wish they had picked a name that better suited the EVE universe. Or the ones that picked something silly and then ended up taking the game seriously but are stuck being named like a clown.

I think its something that should be allowed at least once after your first year in the game. You can change your name in real life and you should be able to do it here for the sake of ingame realism at least.

Charge a plex for it and make it a one time only event after 1 year of active account holding and let it be kept public what name you had before. Problem addressed and solved.

I support this fully, However I think name change should be a 1 time deal per account. Also when the name is changed a eve mail should go out to ever person that has you on their contact list so they know.

There are entirely too many whiners that do not support a name change, for the stupidest of reasons.

I support the option of a name change. Especially for those who purchase a character from someone else. This would have no effect on the history of the character, only what name is displayed. Purchasing a character, IMO, should give the character a new start. The person who purchased the character is highly unlikely to follow in the same path as the seller, and even if they did - so what?

@The argument that a name change could some how "fool" you into getting you ganked... that is such a nOOb statement. If you trust every neutral that enters your system, you deserve to be ganked.

I couldn't afford more my "The Yang" anymore, so I'm stuck with "The Ying". I would like to be able to change my name, only once in a lifetime would be great imo.

Yep, as long as the char can be found by any past names and that the char info lists all past names, I'm okay with the proposal. Consequence is a key principle of eve, and with this condition it is retained. It's then just an inconvenience for people doing background checks, as the amount of work scales with the amount of names the char under scrutiny had...

While at it, I'd definitely like to see transfers being listed in the char info (just dates really, as account name or any other such thing is private).

CCP has some decent reasons for not allowing name changes, but the benefits to the player community outweigh the concerns.

Simply listing the name change in the characterís employment history would solve most if not all concerns; though it would require players to take extra steps to research historical data in some cases (e.g. they would have to search market data for all names a character has held, etc.). CCP could probably develop more comprehensive solutions, but itís not worth the dev time.

At the very least, character renaming should be an optional add-on to the character transfer service for a fee. The original account owner should be able to wipe the character name during the transfer process. The character, of course, could not be played until a new name was entered.

Scammers will always scam. Spies will spy and thieves will be thieves.

Which is why I am in favour of this proposal, wouldn't change much apart from maybe not seeing so many ******ed names in local.

While I can see a lot of flaws with this option I really wish some form of it was introduced. I started playing this game at a young age and made the terrible mistake of adding Iceblade to the end of my name because I thought it was "cool" Sad

It's certainly not cool 7 years on. Still it has convinced me never to get a tattoo Razz

i like this idea and could def use it on my second acct, wow, was that name a mistake!

as long as 1) it costs somewhere in the neighborhood of a plex to buy, 200-300M isk, 2) there is traceability, 'aka' or history tab, and 3) is only available once a year, like a remap

however, i havent seen any suggestions for in-game consequences for a name change... imho all of the 'cons' to a name change mentioned in this thread are simply not enough! i want in-game agents and our-friendly-neighborhood-space-police to look at that character, down at their records, and back up to that character, and say, "and who are you again?"

simply put, i want any char that gets a name change to also take an across the board standings hit, including sec rating... something meaningful, something that will really make people wonder, "sure i got isk out the wazoo from that last corp heist, but do i want to have to go back to running 4's?"

eve = consequences. lets do it!
Very Happy

Nearly 8 years ago I created a name, based on a chat handle that I had been using for many years, a chat handle I had grabbed off a CD jewel case. Alot has changed since then... My character names remind me of a time I would rather forget. I would love the opportunity to give my characters new names.

I would be willing to pay real money for such a privilege.

I support this very much.

What about this?

After name is changed: In game emails sent to any and all people in game who had this person in their contacts list/corp Roster notifying them of the name change. Contact lists are updated with the new name, just like in WoW w/ the friends list.

Edit: I just read Amarr Priests post suggesting Emails as well. :)

Supported. I love my name but I know a few people who started back in 2003-2005 who were confused at the character creation (with the differences between logins / character names) or w/e and ended up with numbers in their names. These people always mention wanting to be able to buy a name change.

What's this doing way back on page 9?!

Anyway, another similar thread popped up (Name Change) with harsh conditions! It has a few interesting points, namely the one time only thing. Some decent comments, here's a proposed ammendment:
Quote:
never having been character transfered (thereby removing any special privelage for those seeking to buy a character just for skills or profitably escape a reputation by selling)

All name changes should forever list in your bio the list of previously held names. So people who change their name often, will still have a record of who they were named previously.

There should be a $10 or $20 real-world fee so that only serious people would want to change their name.

My name I pronounce "Jim Luke" but when I created this character I was using the French spelling. Unfortunately people still pronounce it "Jim Luck". I'd love to be able to change my spelling just once LOL Razz

A fine idea, but I think it should be in-game currency, not real money; maybe 200M ISK. If it's large enough, then it will inflate demand for PLEX's anyway, which should remain the only way to inject ISK into the system. Name changes should take a long time (couple weeks), require that you be in an NPC corporation, and require background checks (50M ISK) to uncover.

I don't agree. Name changing is a metagame feature and as such should cost metagame currency, not game currency. Otherwise those who have more isk can change the name more often etc. Besides, we don't want a new isk sink that has nothing to do with the economy in the game. It should cost dollars/euro.

Hmm, but if I were forced to use cash then I'd just balance it out by paying for my account the next x months via PLEX purchased with ISK.

I think the fact that name changes are even considered metagame by some users is the greatest hurdle here -- although it's something common in the world around us and with the restrictions being considered it not only makes it cost ineffective to be used nefariously but reputation aspects are preserved (via a.k.a. and the mass email idea presented... somewhere). Why it wasn't included originally is baffling to me

I have a couple of characters whose names I have grown tired of, and I would love to have the option to change them. I agree that name-changes need to be limited (even once-a-lifetime would be an improvement)

People who would want to buy isk for USD are going to do it anyway. Name changing is not going to make too much of a difference in that market. I don't like the idea of somebody "saving up isk" to pay for a name change. Name changing cannot affect the economic worth of any item in the game. It's akin to the current fee charged for moving characters between accounts.

Now, now, lets not make assumptions about people ;) Actually, my personal views are against any sort of outside currency affecting the game, but that would be a major thread derail that I'd only be willing to argue elsewhere.

Back on topic: while I do appreciate your taking the time to reply, CyberGh0st, could you please elaborate as to why? I think it would prove educational for the both of us

Lets stay focused on the topic of the thread which is name changes. In regards to the escaping the reputation part of your comment, in what way is the 'a.k.a. tab' idea (and/or mass emailing idea, etc.) insufficient?

In so far as Local is being used for quick identification. (somebody already said this earlier)

Off the top of my head exploit. I'm a rich null sec alliance ceo. Billions in the bank. I grief for fun with my alts, (how else do I get my kicks? :)
Every time my name change timer expires, I send my alt a blob of isk, and have her renamed to the CEO's name of a rival corp who I want to grief, plus a "." or some other hard to notice character at the end. Fly my ship into enemy corp home, kill as many as I can.

Nobody is going to bother to check AKA in the character sheet unless they are suspicious. And you only get suspicious after you get shot at.
