Hmmm, you either chose a stupid name on purpose, didn't put anything more than 3 seconds of effort into choosing a character name that could possibly be with you for years, or you bought a character with a stupid name. You made a choice, clearly the wrong one, and now you want to re-roll it?

EVE is all about choices, and living with them. Sorry you don't like yours, but your gonna have to live with it. Not supporting this one.

Aeronwen...hmm. Well, I hate to break it to ya but in real life ...guess what...I can change my name. Also, since THIS IS NOT real life, and I actually PAY MONEY to play this thing...do you feel it would be bad to permit this for anyone involved?

I don't understand CCP's logic at all here. If my name offends you...I can change it. If it offends me (the one paying)...tough? I like eve because you have the right to offend whomever, and sensitive role players can get all bunched over this NOT ACTUALLY BEING real life and some people don't have 24/7 to play this.

I chose my name because I wanted to play the game as quick as possible - I didn't know the tag would stick with me forever.

This topic has been raised dozens of times. The reason it is shot down over and over is that it can easily be misused. The prime example is corp thefts. If your character is involved in a large enough theft, that NAME is mud. If the name can be changed, the only downside to corp theft is having to change the name of your character. The bio has been deemed unacceptable as the old name is needed to be seen in chat channels by those who have been wronged by the character.

The only reasonable suggestion I've seen to counter the potential for exploiting a name change is adding some form of KOS tag that can be added at a personal/corp/alliance level and allows for a description of the reason it was added. This tag would have to stick regardless of name change. It would likely also need to be viewable by everyone (in the case of sold characters having a hidden downside).

A winning suggestion for name changes would be one that is fair (available to those who have a legitimate reason for changing their character name) and cannot be exploited.

All in favour of a name change.

But restrictions need to be applied... some examples I can think of:

  • Only doable once a year, like remaps

  • Same cost as a character portrait swap

  • History of name change is on the character sheet

  • History of name change is on the limited API

  • Can't change a name within 48 hours of leaving a corp

Eve is about consequences sure, but it's also about deception too, and you read about this a lot in the chronicles, people getting new faces and new names.

If a corp was stolen from, it's common sense the thief would change their identity and to be honest I'm all for that. If the corp really want revenge then they have 48 hours to work with to tag the thief with a - 10. When the thief name changes it's up to the corp to go through their - 10s to figure out the theif's new identity.

I figure the other restrictions are self explanatory, the cost and once a year allowance to avoid exploit, plus the history of the name change so anyone can see who you where.

EDIT: Forgot to add, - Can't leave a corp within 48 hours of a name change - Laughing

I agree with you completely. This is why I suggest an A.K.A. tag for each name. So in the bio or on forums I might be "Something Else" A.K.A. SPENDINGYOURCHILDSUPPORT

you were born a slave? sorry, you'll be slave forever.
you were born poor? sorry, you'll be poor forever.
you were born stupid? sorry, you'll be stupid forever.

sorry, but i don't subscribe to your line of thinking. people grow. people change. you are not what you were yesterday. you will not be the same tomorrow.

i always try to have character's names that i can live with. it means a lot to me. some people don't care at all. but preventing people from changing from "don't care" to "do care" in a supposedly role-playing game is just bad form.

i'd rather have "i was stupid, but i got better" people, than "i was stupid, and now i'm sad, too".

The same way you are assigned 'Titles' for a corp, it can say "Old Name: xxxxxx"

I still am in support of 1 name change in a lifetime.

OK, so I am sure there are toons out there that the owners would love to change the name on, both for legitimate and nefarious purposes. Also, being a protagonist of CCP and of Eve, I propose the following.
  1. For some fee (real currency) an account holder may opt to change a characters name.

  2. By default, the chars bio would have (A.K.A. OLD NAME) so that a corp thief cannot escape their own reputation.

  3. (Quoted from suggestions later in this thread)

  4. Only doable once a year, like remaps

  5. Same cost as a character portrait swap

  6. History of name change is on the character sheet

  7. History of name change is on the limited API

  8. Can't change a name within 48 hours of leaving a corp

PLEASE consider this...dear god please!

I did express my opinion once about name changing. It is here:

http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1402058&page=3#77

For those who are too lazy to click and scroll I just copy paste here:
I totally agree about changing character name, but do it because of different reason and in a different way.
I'd say CCP should let to us change character names constantly, but with particular reason:

To fix characters name.

I know there people concerns about possible abuse of that, but as long as CCP is Crowd Control Programs, I suggest do it by Crowd Control Process.

REASONS:

This game is playable long time. It could take years, so if teenager named his character something like" Homm3rsexsual" and thought that is cool, then when he becomes an adult may change his mind.

To kill character that trained few years nobody wants. Actually if I should kill 2 years character just because of its name, then I probably quit that account rather than train it again (I've got more then on account)

In this case, the player lost his character, time and money.
CCP lost subscription, money with it and the player (if he had only one account)

SOLIUTION:

Apply Crowd Control Process. When CCP allows players to fix their name then everybody becomes happy.

There is Crowd Control Process for this particular problem:

1. Time
2. Real need
3. Money
4. Traceability

TIME:

Applicant should apply for new available name. That option should be in the Account Services. Then wait for it 1-2 months.

REAL NEED

During that time, CCP considers about need of changing that name. For instance:

"Homm3rsexsual" changing to "IkillU2and4eva" should be rejected, but if
"Homm3rsexsual" changing to something similar as normal human name (like John Peterson, Cliff Johnson and such), should be approved.

MONEY:

In the forums people says it should cost about 20$-25$. I say it should balanced in case to ensure of eliminating any possibility to abuse (In my opinion about 30$-100$ per name)

TRACEABILITY:

Standings, persuasions because of committed crimes should stay and Character Info should contain information about previous name and time when it changed at least 2 years of continuous subscription.

Please consider it as alternative proposal.

Supported. I was getting tired of picking character names (I ended up doing a bit of recycling a few years back as a newb, trying to find a combo of school and backgrounds I liked), and ended up picking this one at random. Would love to change it (Even though I am Asatruar)

name change will only cause confusion and more griefing in the long run. so wouldnt be smart to do. HOWEVER, if CCP builds in a way to keep track of that. And I mean on the way like Second Life has now for example, then you can track everyone no matter what name change they did. Then it should not be a problem.

----
SL way: original name keeps visible if wanted (settings) but admins can see who is who always. You can however change once a week for free your name.
----

now, of course it doesn't need to be free. Can change with isk or real money, but besides that it is a very stable way to keep track of anyone who changed a name and if needed punish the right person. While still have everyone the choice wither to change their name or not, and how often.

This is a great idea, so it will never be done.

However, it could make CCP some money for better cars, so it will be done.

A fine idea, but I think it should be in-game currency, not real money; maybe 200M ISK. If it's large enough, then it will inflate demand for PLEX's anyway, which should remain the only way to inject ISK into the system. Name changes should take a long time (couple weeks), require that you be in an NPC corporation, and require background checks (50M ISK) to uncover.

If standings are not getting deleted and a name history in employment history tab I wouldn't see a problem. Would be even better to avoid scammers than just selling your old scammer and buying a new character of the character bazaar, which clear everything about your history.

You could always just make it; so the first year, auto-linking the old name, leads you to the same person. Keep it on a yearly system; names shouldn't be that easy to change. They should be changeable, however.

As for Black-Listing people, and that sort of thing; I really couldn't care less. Sure, a Corp thief should be watched; but really, they should be able to get away too. No reason someone should have a noose hanging around their neck, for that long; or that amount of time, until the incident is forgotten. Sometimes never.

Vendetta's are generally stupid, and childish; quite often, the fault of the person who pursues it. Sometimes, completely imagined; and possibly, even outright slander. Something, which a lot of players in EVE, should think about; next time, they choose to listen to someone, regarding anothers character. I hate the idea of having some anonymous, unknown slander following me around; not knowing even, what it is, or who is spreading it. Yet, it would affect all my interactions in game, with people who had 'heard'; and I wouldn't be able to argue, or even defend myself regarding it. That sort of thing happens in real life too.

More than 10% of the population, are Psychopath's who never choose to kill people; because they find it much more satisfyingQuestion, to ruin their relationships, employability, and ability to live a normal life. - Study by a Professor; at the University of British Columbia.

Black-listing by Employer's, is illegal in Canada; regardless, it still happens, and affects many peoples lives.

That aside.. I do support this idea; and think Real Currency is the way to go.

I'm not sure about allowing a name change every year. Here's a potential problem with that, after several years of allowing players to change character names once a year:

A player has changed the name on his main character three times, and has a large employment history. Corp recruitment usually involves a lot of metagaming, so a recruiter would have to go about investigating what is essentially three characters.

On the other hand, if CCP allows a one-time name change and requires a real currency fee, and the name change clearly shows up in employment history and is visible through limited API, then I guess it's not a big deal. If it's strictly a vanity name change and not a "clean slate" where you keep all your SP and whatnot, great.

If you want a clean slate, sell your character, use an alt to buy a new character with a nicer name and the skills you want. Done.

It's funny I can change my name in other mmo's and even in real life, but eve's too COOL and HARDCORE even more-so than the ****ing real world to be able to not change something that doesn't even matter that much in a game.

Whatever, I'd change my name if I could and I don't even hate my name that bad. I guess this game is just the most sacred thing on earth and shouldn't be tampered with. If I had known the game were even more strict than the actual life I live about names, I might have thought about it a little harder, but for a moment there I thought I was just playing a game.
