One of the abnormal thing with modules and ships is that they never wears out.

It is unrealistic and that why I want to introduce a new item characteristic : normal use of a module and a ship will slowly damage him.

To avoid broken stuff, capsulers have to take care of their stuff by repair their equipment regularly (in station or with Nanite).

That's where the new "Item quality level" arrive (lev1 to lev5) => when producting an T1 item or a T1 ship, a random quality will be set to products.

Quality lev 1 will make the module/ship being damaged faster than Quality lev 4. Quality lev 5 almost never suffer from wear.

- Meta 1 to 4 have a lev 1 quality
- Meta 0 will have a random 1 to 5 quality(Meta 0 have a simplier technologie that make them more reliable)
- Meta 5 and more have a lev 5 quality

Normal use of modules will slowly damage used items, and will not damage nearby modules.

The quality lev set the damages generated by normal use, he is different from overloading heat damage.
The quality lev is also different than the Meta lev cause meta change the item efficiency but quality doesn't.

Thanks to also have a look to this different idea

It is unrealistic

And the point where you started caring about realism (to so anal a degree) is when you went wrong.
We already have overheating, just deal with the possibility that there are nanobots or some **** constantly repairing our already high-efficiency modules, if your OCD can't handle it.

or even the ship's crew doing routine maintenance.
or internal repair drones (Anshar info mentions cargo-handling drones).

We don't want to integrate the most annoying features of WoW into Eve. This does not add to the player market or make the game more interesting.

this does not add anything to the game. If you're looking for a realism explanation...Your modules are looked over and tuned up when you dock.

..aren't PI producers looking for new uses for their products?

As for the 'adds nothing to the game'. You're used to absolute safety if you dock your stuff up and don't touch it. Eve is not about safety.

If you have a POS it needs fuel.
If you have sovereignty or an Outpost it can be captured.
If you leave your ship float in space it will vanish after 30 days.

PvP boats will die before any need for maintenance arises anyway. The ones who will be affected most are the high sec bears.. Twisted Evil

I dont like the idea of use causing damage... simply because of the number of extra DB calls that would get made every time you do anything.

However, I would like to see 3 things in conjunction:

1) some way of targetting specific ship subsystems for added tactical play.

2) repair of modules costing minerals (and maybe components in the case of T2 stuff) instead of isk
(nanopaste would still work the same)

3) mods dropped by rats to be heavily damaged (big boost to mineral demand)

I had this happen to the weapons and other items I'd installed on a ship I had in another game I played before EVE. I had taken a break from the game for a while and left my ship docked. When I returned I found that the guns, drive and shield had slowly degenerated and had eventually been destroyed during my hiatus from that game. I decided I couldn't be bothered playing any more and made the hiatus permanent.

Terrible idea -1000

the concept is interesting but all you are going to accomplish is frustrating people.
It will result in a boost in nanite paste (or whatever) and people will just carry it around. They will repair every time the dock or when they fight.

I cant see this introducing any new level of game play other than irritating people on mass.
