I was scanning in a .4 sec with 7 core scanner probe I's and all of a sudden they fell off of the system scanner. Tried to reconnect and nothing. There were pirates in the system, I was cloaked but this doesn't affect the probes. So, I'm assuming that they were destroyed or stolen? Is this with the D-scanner? How do you do this....

How long had you been probing?

They have time limit, when the time limit runs out they poof.

I've been probing for a while. I've found many wormholes and old runes. These probes I just launched and I have a little over an hour with my probe skills, so they were only out for a few minutes. I've never needed an hour to scan something down. Don't know.

All possibilities I can think of, in rough order of (decreasing) likelihood:

* you actually thought you just launched them, but they were older probes, so they really expired normally

* you accidentally destructed your probes without realizing it

* there was a genuine bug in the probes code and the duration timer got busted somehow

* there was a genuine bug with the client-server communication and the server thought you ordered your probes destroyed

* there's some weirdness they (the other guys) figured out that actually lets you probe for probes, and they scanned them down, then they smartbombed them (you can smartbomb a probe, right ? not 100% sure)

* they somehow miraculously stumbled onto your probes (or your probes stumbled onto them)

* they actually hunted down your probes with the d-scanner (least likely because it usually takes HOURS to get to an object you only have d-scan contact with, and that only with heavy-duty prior preparation)

For what it is worth, I usually carry 8 Sisters probes and 100 regular probes at all times.

As I spend a lot of time in w-space, random glitches, server crashes, and user error (like dozing off while scanning) will result in lost probes, and being unable to scan in w-space is A Bad Thing™.

Sometimes it is also wise to GTFO and leave the probes (and drones) behind, when every second counts for your survival.
