Aye, the lighting is very limited with the current version. The old version combined the color of the light with the background. Also the light direction allowed a lot more "good poses". With the current version the lights seem to stay in place / height. With different options only changing the color or the number of lights. It's hard to make a pleasing pose with the character facing upwards as this tends to make the skin/eyes look really plain, very little in terms of reflections.

I need to be able to change the light direction. Make a slider or two that moves the lights up and down / left right for each side.

Forgive me if someone already said that, but here is my few notes about my first experience with new character editor...
- I don't like look of caldari-civire anymore. They all now looks like Nikolay Valuev in rage. And also too old. That is dissapointing because i already spent plenty of time on my character...
- Maybe this is problem of my game only, but eyes color and hair colors some times doesn't change then I select other one. Same to skin tones. Colors change only then i pick a different haircut for example.
- I believe hairs is still in deep WIP
- And some time it throws an error then I select race/bloodline.
- Clothes variants are few... but I think that is because it still WIP
- I hope that old players would be given an opportunity to change bloodline... this wouldn't be such a big unbalance or something, because all bloodlines have same starting stats, and there is no 3 charisma achuras or something like this anymore

Few more:

  • Pressing the "Toggle Clothes" button resets the tuck options but doesn't change which option is displayed. e.g. if you have tuck 4 selected for "Top", toggle clothes off, toggle clothes on, then the model displays as if tuck 1 was selected, but the selector still shows 4/7

  • New blind eyes option is selected as default (odd) and isn't always changeable. (This happened once to me)

With removal of different starting attributes of the bloodlines the bloodlines have become useless. Imho it would be a nice point in time to allow players to change their bloodlines at least once.

One type of expression I really would like to see is this. See how she looks into your soul like she wouldn't give a **** even if there was something in there? Well, this is the closest I came to recreating that. And by closest, I mean it's not close. :(

It's not close since you have raised the eyebrows so much that the expression has changed to more akin to being unsure or confused. Just lower the eyebrows until the forehead creases disappear. Drag them to a neutral position (from the sides and the middle, don't make any creases). Also you might want to raise the lower eyelid just a hint, almost unnoticeable amount. Also lower the upper eyelids a bit too (I guess you have already done this on your current rendition).

There's not much you can do currently with the eyebrow placement. Compared to the old creator the current basemodels have eyebrows placed lower. And if you try and drag them up in the sculpting phase they unfortunately have an effect on the "pose" phase. I.e. if you drag the eyebrows closer together you get a stronger crease than when you drag the eyebrows further from each other... I wish they were unconnected so that you could truly "sculpt" the face and not just control the morphs.

Okey, now I played with character creator some time and made bunch of characters of my favourite bloodlines (caldari mostly). And here is my experience about their look. Achuras is cool. Deteis is nice too. But something little disapointing about civire is that civire male looks old. I showed characters created to some friend not related with EVE and asked them how old are characters on them. All character was created with lowered aging slider. And ages in answers for Deteis was 25-30 years, 25-35 for Achura and 40-50 for civire. I think main source of older look of civire male is dark skin lap on sides of mouth/nose, which appers so deep only at people of 40-50 years old. As you can see even on my current avatar there wasn't such dark laps at corners of mouth/nose before... could it be made a little less distinct at lowest position of aging slider? And few words about Amarr. They look old, but it always been so. Actualy I managed to create very cool and ebill Amarr face. Please visit your user settings to re-enable images.

P.S. sorry, for big picture

If you have hairs like this pretty woman you can't hide that f*** ears behind the hair. The look of ears is terrible in every option you can choose. The overall look of ears is far behind the rest of the char editors high level.

Are there any plans to allow re-posing after character creation? It'd be kinda awesome to update your character with new poses to suit your mood, or play style, of the day .. Obviously not remodelling, just posing the model you made.

Some mates have asked if I could create there chars after the patch... I guess many other players would like to use a service like this. The character editor has high potential but unexperienced players cannot benefit from it.

To provide such a 3rd party service CCP has to do this:

  1. Don't force users to create the new avatar on login. Ask the player if he wants to change it like you do it here on test server.

  2. Add the feature to import/export char settings. For example a xml file like ship fitting.

Last point is important - otherwise the other users would have to handover there login data which is not a really good idea!

Hehe, thank you for the inspiration. You have a very good hand at this for sure, you definitely came quite close to what I tried to create in 2003 Very Happy.
I was not trying to re-create the excact image though, just fiddling around a bit and trying to get a more realistic feel.
I will definitely spend quite a while before I commit to anything once this goes live. Wink

Tried it, but maybe I missed it... well, it's not like I don't enjoy the new char creator enough to try it again Smile Problem was, whatever I tried to do, the crease would show up and ruin the whole effect.

Picture (for making the quote smaller)

Nice attempt, but it still doesn't feel the same. It justs looks like a neutral pose, not really the face of a person that even when they show no emotion they give you the feeling they don't care about anything at all. Confused Honestly now, I think the old char creator had more personality, it felt more life-like, but, then again, this is still WIP :P Two more weeks until the final product gets delivered, so I guess I can still have faith.Wink

That's quite nice! First I thought I'd give it a go also, but when Googling Wei Zhao I came across Shu Qi (Qi Shu?) and got this out of a Gallente Jin-Mei. I think especially the middle pose came out quite nice:

still buggy but working well. some ear selection would be nice i.e. different shapes, connections to jaw line. I noticed a lack of eye shaping tools, maybe intentional on CCP's part, And after creating my character and snapping my pics, the login screen version looks great. But my In game character portrait has a BLOND beard instead of the BLACK color I gave it. I don't know if this is the same "known" issue as noted. here is login, and in game. I would suggest that for the general body shape (i.e. the shaping of arms torso etc.) Using a "pull the arrow" system like seen in Spore from maxis. It would give more direct control in one direction, eliminating some frustration of less advanced users. I think a custom direction/color lighting tool for posing would give some better flexibility for some more detailed pictures. The basic light tool should stay where its at so people just wanting to create and go can do so. I can also vouch that it runs smooth without crashing on Linux. Running ubuntu 10.04 with WINE compatibility layer.

i'm not sure if anyone has covered this, but for me it seems that the eye color isn't taking. I've been trying to do green/blue eye color and its not taking it. that and the system seems very laggy and very, very slow at loading the items that a persons pick. like picking clothes, and chaning the color and adding hair.

In trying to see how closely I can approximate my real-life self, the main thing I've noticed that I can't recreate is the arch of my eyebrows -- it seems like you can move the ends of the brows around, but the middle is just a curve fit between the ends?

Usability-wise my main feedback is that after playing with the tool for quite a while I still keep discovering morph points I hadn't noticed before. Maybe some way (hold down a modifier key?) to highlight all the "handles" at once? And/or some kind of list view of all the options, maybe tucked away under an "advanced" section under "shape", where you can see every current adjustment. It seems like the highlighting you get on the mouseover ought to be enough, but some of the areas are very near others, or hard to spot from the front where you normally operate.

My other usability feedback is that for handles that adjust in all three possible dimensions (i.e. cheekbones up/sideways/forward) it would be helpful if there was a way to change only one at a time. Like, if I'm happy with the width of my cheekbones and want to raise them, there should be a way to do that without messing up the width.

The differences between the options on the "complexion" dial are extremely subtle for several of the bloodlines I tried, to the point of uselessness.

The randomizer button for shape affects everything, even though only the muscle and weight are actually listed in that section. That was unexpected, though I think it's what I want...it just needs to be clearer.

On my GeForce GT 330M the performance was just okay at high shader settings especially for changes involving long hair, or randomizations that change many things at once. I'd be scared of this tool with anything less powerful, which is a shame because EVE mostly works great on less powerful graphics cards.

My biggest suggestion, and I assume this has come up from many testers, is that when you start from an existing character the tool needs to make at least a token effort to match the existing character. If she had long hair, give her long hair. If she had green eyes, give her green eyes. Use the same background image and clothes if possible. Etc. I understand that all the details of the morph are impractical to reproduce but the basics should be maintained. No effort to match the hair is particularly galling.

Edit: editing after undoing a randomization doesn't recognize the undo properly. I did a shape randomization, which changed many things. Going back one step in the history appeared to undo all of it, but on my next modification (of, say, my chin), everything else jumped back to the randomized appearance.

Sorry if this was already mentioned.

We need sliders

Right now, when altering the proportions of the face and body I am flying blind. I grab and drag a highlighted body feature and adjust it until it looks about right. But sometimes that feels... Clunky? Sometimes i move in one direction and the part gets bigger, but when i keep going it snaps back to small again ect.

*All body parts should have sliders, just like muscle tone and body weight does.
*Can we have that graphic (little dot inside the big box), just like the classic character creator? It looks like some body parts have Y and Y axis, which can take a while to fine tune. Especially when you are flying blind.
*grabbing and dragging the body part is fine, and should remain. But slider graphics should be an addition
*having slider graphics will make body/face tuning more precise than just grabbing and dragging.
*having slider graphics will make the user aware of ALL alterable dimensions. Sometimes hovering around looking for adjustable parts, I am not even aware of regions I can adjust.
*having slider graphics would make the body and face altering much clearer, easier to control X & Y axis, and easier to set maximum/minimum dimensions.
*having slider graphics makes it easier to remember your favourite settings. Eg - You remember that a heroic looking Jaw has the sliders set half way, two thirds, and the last one all the way to the right. I figure many people will prototype their look many many times until they get it right.
*having the slider bars visible would allow you to take screenshots of how you made your killer look. For yourself, for future reference. Or to share with your friends. That way, less talented avatar creators could get pointers on how to achieve their look.

Which brings me to another concept..

*Avatar settings should be savable (just like ship fittings) and exportable. Again, for your own reference or if you want to share your creations.

I know some people who like keeping things ultra-real will not feel comfortable with being able to quantify and duplicate your every intimate dimension, because it takes away realism and your individuality. Perhaps this opens up the floodgates to endless barby clones. But still, i think it fits in with the science fiction lore. I imagine many rich citizens in the eve future will be able to pre-select popular models and whizz through the plastic surgery machine, meaning a whole stack of rich people end up looking like the flavour of the month (amusingly).

And if your really love your individual look, you dont have to share it. I know I never do (in other MMOs with crazy customization)

Haven't been on this in awhile to test out until today.

So far, the improvements over the last iteration I tried are pure awesome.

However, major issues on the technical side. I have a GeForce 8600 GT. I don't consider it a bottom end graphics card, and in fact it works fine with most games at fairly high settings. With this char developer I can run everything at a high setting except shader quality. Whenever I switch it to high, everything from the shoulders up flickers between black and normal. It also creates a HUGE difference in lighting and facial quality. Problem with shader quality at low, besides lighting, is that some garments and loose hair styles completely fail to appear.

I understand you'd get a reduction in overall quality with low shader setting but the issues I'm experiencing just seem too dramatic in my opinion to overlook.

Please visit your user settings to re-enable images.

This avatar looks like drug addicted Kate Moss and not like my lovely Turay.

I was not able to build a character with any recognition value. The bigger eyes, the hair accessories, clothes etc. Imho is recognition important - every races had its own typical looks. I know some guys do not spent time on character creation they click (if at all) random morph that's it. But I normally need a few hours to create my chars, everything has to be nearly perfect. While I am not a roleplayer I like the typical look of my Vherokior Female chars and I have lots of them. All around the new char is faaaaaaaaaar away from my lovely Minmatar Vherokior and that's frustrating!

Another thing I noticed is "Are CCP racists?". It's strange for me that you don't have the ability to change the skin color in other MMPORGS like Everquest 2 you can do that!

In my point of view Incarna is great but until release it should be possible to create nearly identical faces than you have before.

Join to your post.
I spent a lot of time when i create a character and I'm not the woman. Wink
Happens that I do it more than 2-3 hours, including I long think out to the character a name.
I like to play the character who has been thought over to trifles.
I even have time to think up to it birth and life history.
But for all it, all possible tools are very desirable.
I wouldn't like to recreate my portrait while in release of "New Character Creation" there will be no much more choice.

I would have to strongly disagree (but additional option to do so is fine, I just don't think CCP has the time to do this as even the current one is still buggy as hell), unless we get the same fidelity if not even more which is still needed. I still feel constricted after playing with the editor for quite some time.
Quote:

Problem is, you would need a ton of sliders.

Quote:

The four boxed with the old editor is not nearly enough with the new creator. You would need probably twenty or forty (too many to count). With the old editor you "sculpted" and posed at the same time.

Quote:

Probably easier to recreate a character but again there would need to be a ton of sliders as you are controlling not in two dimensions but three.

Quote:

Maybe a better choice would be to have a toggle key that would place a small glowing dot on the area you can tweak?

Unless you could save the character in edit state and continue later, no need to take a screenshot and laborously adjust each and every small detail.
Combine this with the option to save a few other snapshots so that you can switch between tweak states to compare the overall change between changes.

This or make a system wich can be controlled in-game.

My only fear is that CCP will dumb down the creator which will lead to the "clone army". I'm not even totally satisfied with the current options the new creator offers.
