As we here at CCP like to make your Christmas wishes come true, the character creation and customisation will once again be available in the new Sisi build that is being deployed today. The previous discussion thread can be found here

We have made improvements to the character creation and customisation, however, it is still a work in progress (WIP) and not final. Listed below are known issues with the new character creator and tips on the sort of feedback we would find most valuable.

Known Issues:
- There are some visible texture seams on the characterĎs head and neck
- Some issues remain with low shader settings - this feature is best enjoyed with shader settings on high
- The randomizer always selects blonde hair
- Beard and eyebrow selected colours do not always persist to rendering
- Restrictions on head movement in portrait mode need some fine tuning
- Some texturing issues around ears and hairline on certain hairstyles
- Hair colour and highlighting sections need adjusting on certain hairstyles
- All art assets are still WIP, this is especially true for hair, beards, makeup and skin details

Points we are particularly looking for feedback on:
- Usability concerns - how easy is the feature to use? Please provide some reasoning with your feedback in this area.
- Crashes or complete failure to load. We are very interested in hardware specs or detailed repro steps for any sort of crashing or complete mechanical failures.

Please mention whether you are using the high or low shader setting at the start of your post. We highly recommend that you run in high (Shader Model 3), with fastcharacters enabled even the low end SM3 cards should be able to run without massive problems. If you do have a SM3 capable card but still run into problems we would VERY much appreciate you posting the card model and a thorough description of the issue.

Regarding the last 2 deployments I was a little conerned if you'll get the creater to a usable state and we can (re)create our characters we love. But you did it :)

Good:
The differtent selections have have a start end an end. So you can see, when your @ the last hairstyle
Asymetic pictures
The race/gender selcting-screen looks good



Bad:
Some long-hair styles have some unreal flattering when moving the head
If you use the mouse-wheel to select for example hairstyles, sometimes you zoom in/out. Should be deaktivated in the menu.
Some old hairstyles aren't availible. Missing some long-hair for my main :/

When you take the pictures, the small picutre [you seen in local] looks strange moste of the time, but I don't get why :/


Suggestions:
Not only sunglasses, no normal ones would be nice too
A Center-Avatar button for picture-taking
A reset-butting for picture-raking
Missing gray hair.

Initial Feedback:

1. Jet black background against char causes visibility problem:
When selecting trousers, it is impossible to see the difference between them all against a jet black background (only the dark blue one seems to stand out from the others).

2. UI issues for horizontal choice menus:
The horizontal choice menus for all objects (clothes, hair, etc) are not intuitive. The user is confused how to move left and right. I tried clicking the sides of the boxes, tried dragging with left mouse button (best result, but doesnt work all the time), and right click dragging.

3. UI for Colour options:
When you select hair for example, the box to the left mentions colour, but there doesnt seem to be a way to pick other colours with it? Edit: I now found that the "colours" are grey versions with a hint of the colour they represent. Maybe these could be the full colour ratehr than a grey-ed version of blonde, red etc?

Otherwise impressive graphics, looking forward to the update :)

Quite frankly this is a pretty intimidating tool as things stand, I won't be using it at all though - so please do NOT make me click away an annoying pop up every time I log in.

I am happy with a blank character portrait, so let the pop up only bug me once.

First impressions:

I loaded up a Brutor alt for my first practise run, and I was very impressed that I was able to get a good characterisation of my original; with a bit of tweaking. (I should have taken pics, but I wanted to jump in and see if it applied to his character yet - it doesn't.)

1. The Muscle-highlights are a *lot* stronger now than I remember, making it much more obvious about what is being selected. Felt like a really big improvement. Especially when modelling the nose, lol...

2. You've added a kind of laser-pointer effect for the mouse, to make it easier to see 'where' exactly you're pointing on the face (for example) - I like that a lot.

3. The control for two-tone hair is excellent, but the range of colour choice is still quite limited (I liked the mostly natural variations and combinations, butt I know many will want the 'crazies') - I couldn't see any effect from the 'offset' sliders though. As mention by a previous poster, I miss not having a grey hair option. Facial hair has greatly improved.

4. It'd be great to be able to change the colour of facial hair to match your secondary colour; both eyebrows, and beard.

5. Colour variations on some of the clothes didn't seem to work - ie. they don't match the preview.

I'm going to go back in, and see if I can find an account with an empty slot, but overall - it feels far more intuitive to me now, than it did before. And crafting the muscles, etc. feels a lot smoother, and controlled. Will need to try a female to see if the Insta-small-huge-massive-tiny breast problem is better...

Update

1. Women's breasts still go crazy, lol... Far too sensitive, difficult to control. (Imagine...)

2. I haven't tried every hairstyle, but this one does weird stuff at random..... My Brutor guy's dreads, randomly stretched too, when changing things (colour, clothes, etc.) but her's seems to settle half-way to her nose, after even half a second. Her fringe is only very briefly above her eye-level, like in the first pic, when you first change something.

3. Big improvement to facial expressions, not just Angry Girl --> Sad Girl, is finally possible :)

4. It still really, really needs a 'reset facial-expression' button, of some kind. It's still too difficult to find your way back to a neutral state.

Over all i think it still needs alot of work.

1. No face tatoos? Really? thats what makes a minmatar unigue.

2. Jackets...anyone remember still have there members only jackets from '86. They were ugly then too. Leathers nice though

3. Seems no matter how hard you try every Minmatar comes out lookin like a member of the columbian drug cartel. Maybe allow any skin tone for any race.

4. Its a neat tool, and it'll be alot of fun, but theres really very little diviersity. I think 70% of the eve community is gonna look like there all cousins.

Everything looked good for me except moving the character around in portrait mode, had a hard time aligning him the way I wanted, mostly his body. ( looks like you are on top of this )

Also I didn't want to create a thread just to ask but...

Will you create a New NeoCom FeedBack Thread?

The new auto-hide smoothness is awesome but it goes under current windows. Having it on top I find would be better (for me anyways) or have the option to choose.

I was just going to write that. The Fringe looks a bit very Emo at the moment ("I don't want to see the world around me!") Wink

Overall, the Tool is very nice.

Pros:

-Lots of choice in facial modelling, hairstyles.

-The hair is finally physical.

-The modelling is a lot more intuitive now. You finally have a feeling, what you are doing and it is very good to have different shaping options depending on which angle you look at your toon.

Cons:

- The modelling is sometimes still too sensitive.

- You should be able to disable modelling while you're adjusting other things like hair, make-up, clothing to not accidentally alter your toon.

- Clothing of the races is still too similar. I hate Amarr, but they should definitely get their hoods Wink

- There should be a "Reset" button in the posing window to get back to the default expression.

- There should be a "Disable Animation" button in the shaping view.

- The ageing and scarring options are hardly visible. You should be able to alter this options in more steps than just 3 (something similar to muscularity and weight).

Ok, thats it for the first pass. Rolling Eyes I'll go and play around with the creator a little bit more.

Oh, and please, let the players change the gender of their toons one time when you release this update on Tranquility.

Second Impressions:

I found an account with a blank slot, to have more freedom to experiment, and wow! What a change you've made to the initial selection screens. That's a massive improvement. The way the map has been laid out, the hex-grid overlay and everything looks great...

I've been playing through various accounts, for nearly two years I guess, and usually have three/four accounts on the go at once; but if I was coming to this game for the very first time, there is no doubt I'd be hugely impressed by this 'entrance'.

1. When choosing a race from the entry map-screen, the usual video box popped up 'centre-screen', but it only auto-played for two of the races (I forget which).

2. The play-video, and sound-icons for that box are hidden until you mouse-over it, and even then, they're tiny; so, unlikely to be noticed at first by a new player to the game.

3. If you select any race, and go into their bloodline-screen, all the characters are bald for all the races; apart from three (four?) of the Caldari. The one on the Male Achura is ridiculous; so I personally feel it'd be better if they were all bald, and let new players explore the possibilities themselves. A bad first impression might stick.

4. If you enter that screen, then click 'back' everything's fine until you click a different race then this pops up. If you click 'no' nothing happens, and you stay where you are. If you click 'yes' it moves to the race you clicked on. Is that a recurring bug from last time, it feels familiar...

5. I really like the subdued lighting in the bloodline screens, and the way the characters focus more on the screen when you select their bloodline. The spotlight effect works nicely too; a thousand times better than the old carousel...

6. Racial clothing. Thank you...! It's only in the bloodline screen at the moment, but it's a great move... :) Still need more variation of course, but it's really important to me that there is some kind of cultural distinction at that stage in a character's 'life'.


update

1. On the bloodline screen, at my screen-resolution at least, the 'flavour text' at the bottome, is very difficult to read - far too small, but with the current screen layout being so good, I can't really see a better way to include it without 'taking away' from the design... :(

2. Need more morph targets, in the facial expressions screen; in RL it's difficult to make certain expressions without flaring your nostrils a bit, which isn't currently possible. Neither is it possible to 'pout', so another mouth target would be nice.....

A couple quick impressions on usability:
- the character moves too much when sculpting. Make it so that the character freezes when you're adjusting/dragging/sculpting the feature where you want to.
- Also make the history save only after you have released the mouse button. Annoying when the progress bar starts blinking in the middle of sculpting.

Otherwise a much improved creator. More impressions to come later.

I was messing around with the new iteration of the character creator and to anyone who was worried that everyone in a bloodline will look the same don't. Just hit the randomize all button a few times and you'll see how much variation there is even within bloodlines.

A few things.

* Not enough muscle definition on the women. I can get a dude to be quite ripped, but can hardly get any definition at all on a woman. I'm not asking for bodybuilders, just more than completely soft looking.

* The hair colors need work. I spent a bunch of time looking for a nice brown and couldn't find anything satisfactory.

* More hairstyles, and it would be nice if you could group them somehow to make it easier to go through them. Something like "business man style," "punk style," "shaved style," etc.

* Tattoos would be great, I wouldn't use them personally but I still think they should be there.

* You can adjust women's breasts, so how about adjusting a man's junk (kidding...sorta...ok not really)?

* Which reminds me, the shirts don't fit around women's breasts right, it just looks...wrong...

My first 'bug'

I don't know quite how it happened (I haven't been able to replicate it yet) but at some point, while creating this badass Amarr I lost all my morph points; and all my clicking would do was rotate the camera, or pan it...

Eventually, I managed to get then back again by going into the <escape> menu, and clicking 'apply' on the Display Settings side of the menu, then closing the window. There may have been any other number of ways to 'reset' this problem, but until I can replicate it; I don't know.....

Also, I only noticed the problem once I was in the Portrait screen, it may already have been bugged before I went in, but because I was dressing the dude I didn't notice...

OK initial impression. This is starting to look much better and I have clear visual cues on what exactly I'm about to do. The actual doing is still a bit of an experiment and it wouldn't hurt if you included a short paragraph about the basic controls and what they do in the CC(character creator). This helps the user to get in to the thing a bit faster and more importantly makes him aware of the options he has at his disposal. Don't make the user use trial and error to ferret out all the things you allow him to do with the CC. Make it clear* to the user what he can change and how.

*Too often people complain about the lack of features that are already in the game, because you didn't bother to document/make clear what options there are available and how to utilize them. Reading the forums actively or previous testing experience of the CC should not be a prequisite to utilizing all the options the CC has available.

I'll second this. Now the option is between someone suffering from famine and a normal person who doesn't exercise at all. I would suggest something like this at the minimum as the female muscular option. It's not a bodybuilder type, but it's very athletic with clear definition on the muscles. It has the added benefit of looking absolutely beautiful. Thumbs up on having nice options with the hips though.

First of all itís a nice tool, lots to play with.

Maybe itís me but, can I make a FAT character at all? I canít for the life of me creat one, special the female creation is like she is a starving poor individual, again, it could be me and my lack of playing with all the possibilities.

Also when you try some variations it feels like there arenít that many ďreallyĒ noticeable variations, and here again it could be me.

Going to play with it some more and report back.

I'm going to focus on usability feedback because that's my specialty.

First off, the UI from beginning to end is much, much improved over the first public test iterations. It "feels" like part of a AAA title now. The two dimensional graphic design aspects from backgrounds to the positioning of information or objects are much improved.

Please consider the following:

  • The type is often hard to read, particularly long descriptive paragraphs. Some of this has to do with the relative resize of the type as the resolution is changed, but at all resolutions I experienced some eye-strain. Please consider slight adjustments to leading and placing a gradient or otherwise translucent solid behind long paragraphs to make them stand out more and blend less with the background (ie. the universe map on the racial select prompt).

  • The above is similarly apparent during the bloodline prompt, but less important as it is completely white-on-black.

  • History bar is an awesome feature. However, it often interferes with the mesh controls. Consider putting a mouseover block on mesh controls a few pixels from the history bar.

  • Sub-selection windows (for eye color etc.) are too tiny.

  • Contextual tips in Customization need their own box and need to follow the mouse on the Y-axis.

  • Consider some preset "emotions" for the posing panel. It can be rather difficult to make the poses come out right, and there's obviously a lot of limitation tweaking to be done here.

  • nVidia GTX 280: Soft shadows can appear fuzzy as if not rendering properly. This has been apparent in other games as well.

You can create fairly fat male characters, just set weight to full and then drag out the stomach area.

All grafix settings on maximum. Resolution 2560x1024 (dual monitor)
64 bit Windows Vista Sp2 all updates applied, Intel core 2 duo 6400 @ 2.13GHz 4 GB Ram
Grafix card NVIDIA GeForce 210.

My graphix card is pretty low end (getting new shiny one for Christmas, but good to test out on lower end hardware for finding usability issues). It managed to keep up useably but was pretty jerky at times. Particularly while sculpting.

For this test I tried to recreate my Main, Soden Rah. I will try the complete from scratch creator, and look at female avatar creation later, when one of my alts has finished being killed and recycled.

Ok now thatís out of the way... This Character creation system is Light Years ahead of the one I first saw, and I appreciate the work that has gone into it, I will highlight some of the bits I liked later. But first, and in no particular order, here are the things I didn't like....

Ok first up; I have recently Upgraded to dual monitors, which is great, and eve never looked so good, particularly now I have banished almost all the windows onto the second screen. However the character creator has a fatal flaw for dual screen users, the avatar appears right in the middle and thus gets split in half. The same camera offset technology recently applied to the in game experience should solve this.

Second; there is a minor bug I noticed the explanatory tooltips for the upper right hand menu appeared behind the menu, making them unreadable.

Third; the avatar now moves around even more than it did in the last iteration. It looks like a bored 5 year old that canít stand still. This is unbelievably irritating when you're trying to sculpt it, For the Love of EVE will you please add in an option to freeze the avatar and/or have it freeze while being sculpted. This also has benefits for those running lower end systems as less animating work to be done.

Fourth: I have said it before but the Back/Accept buttons on the lower right hand side should be Back/Forward buttons till the last screen. This is industry standard and what people expect to see, If you have accept it looks like it skips the remaining stages and just finishes the whole thing.

Fifth; I have also said this before; there needs to be a way of browsing through the various options without them being applied to your avatar as you browse through them. It makes the whole process very slow and laggy. Simply add in an apply button for each option and only have the avatar change to the currently selected option when its pressed. Thus when i want to scroll through 20 options looking for a decent long hairstyle (there isn't really one atm, but there is one which is passable for now) it doesn't try to apply ever hairstyle a scroll past making the whole computer slow down and grind to a juddering halt.

Sixth: Options should have names/descriptions as itís really hard to tell what some of the options do, the eyebrows and hairstyles are pretty easy to tell apart but some of the cheek colouring/eye details the small picks look pretty identical.

Seventh: TATOOS ... I want my racial bloodline war paint please.

Eighth; Clothing, there needs to be much more of it. I want my Avatars to be wearing their best dress uniforms, or their fabulous rich Formal wear. With gold braid and all the trimmings. My chars back-story is of being in the wealthy elite (Well I got into the pod program for starters) and I wouldn't be seen dead in most of the clothes we have available at the moment, at least not unless I was undercover. There should be shirts that don't look like you could pick them up from a beach hut in ibeatha. Trousers that don't look like they have built in kneepads for when I go skateboarding...
In short I want clothing that makes my char look like he could gamble away a small mining colony and still be unruffled. (Not that he gambles, and if he did he wouldnít lose. But he should look like he could if he wanted to.)

Ninth; My character is supposed to be rich, well educated, and a special forces operative. He uses his brain and doesnít do heavy lifting and while fit and surprisingly tough, is quite slim, and slight, with a fairly narrow, perhaps even gaunt face. The sculpting options in the new char creator donít let me achieve this. I canít make the shoulders narrow enough, and the face wonít get long and narrow enough.
More sculptability away from the Arnold Swartznegger, Adonis look, and more towards the fit and active intellectual look, I am Gallente after all, not Caldari.

Tenth; I want to be able to adjust my characters height. It should be an option to specify how tall you are.

Eleventh; I would like to be able to have the option of some visible signs of being a pod pilot and having implants (that donít disappear under my clothes ), Could almost look like jewellery. Specially I would like some options for the eyes, some sign of the ocular implants.

Ok Things I did like were....

The clothing toggle button. Does just what it says on the tin and is very useful.

The General layout, with some minor already mentioned exceptions, Is very shiny and nice looking while still being functional and easy to use.

The Avatars themselves are pretty impressive and I look forward to having them in-game.

The Matrix style implants down the spine are very nice.

The Hair Fuzz options are much better. I can now have a convincing chin warmer to b proud of ;-)

More later after more testing but that should do for now.
Overall, Much Better, Looking forward to the release.

So, this is all pretty cool. Questions/comments/observations:

*Hairstyles: most of these are pretty bad/weird looking (for the men, at least). Just go to a regular barber shop and look at the pictures out front. Voila, 30 different men's hair styles -- none of which are bizarre pompadours or weird d****y things that appear to have a bumpit. Also, in the last version there was an option for bright orange hair, and gallente have had funky hair for like, ages, right? Why are there no manic panic bright blue/orange/purple hair color options?

*Clothes: extremely limited color selection. Can we brighten things up? Or let us specify colors for each garment?

*The bridge of the nose is super wrinkly for no apparent reason and there doesn't seem to be any way to fix that...

*Skin Detail is makeup, right? Does it work on male toons? I couldn't see that it had any effect.

The UI is pretty good (never thought I'd say that about an aspect of this game). I just hopped right in and started picking stuff and dragging bodyparts around.

For portrait snapping, I agree with whoever said you need a "reset to neutral" button, because it's pretty easy to drag your toon into looking like some cross-eyed slackjawed ****** and it can be hard to totally undo.

I have played with this for about an hour now, here is my first creation: Minmatar Sebiestor Female

Good points:

All the new adjustments are fantastic, finally we can tweak the hips and other nice bits. The chest moving as the caracter is breathing is great. The physics applied to the hair and clothes is a nice touch.

The menu system with the colour selection is working really well, however the colours in the palette are not very good at reperesenting the colour applied.


Negative bits:

I would say 99% of the textures are in place, some clothes seems to be missing the colour in the icon.
The motion of the char is very nice looking, however when the character decides to turn the head just as you are about to pick an area to adjust it is very annoying. Can we please be able to freeze the pose by holding CTRL?

Long hair is clipping with the clothes, especially at the back.

- from time to time I did lose the "sculpture" ability in both creation and portrait mode (mouse staying a boring arrow). Came back after some switching to bloodlines screen and then back to creation/portrait mode
- I also did lose lightning, also in both modes. Same workaround as above.
- The faction selection screen threw an exception error on one (only one, not necessary the same) faction, each time i got back to the screen ( missing arg{} )
- color and secondary color : I am pretty convinced that the secondary color is (should be?) actually the primary one, at least for hairs.
- in portrait mode, the intensity does not affect shadows, but only highlights, wouldn't it be cool to be able to soften shadows ?
- also about lightning, there's only white/yellow/blue highlights. Can we have red and others back ?
- glitches in portrait mode also appear on the snapshots. Which makes me ask myself : how are the snapshots processed in the end ? Are they reprocessed with the best graphical settings on an external server before going live ?
- can we save the 4 snapshots and switch between them in-game after ? (would be really really great).

Anyway, the char creation is awesome. I spent some time on it trying to recreate my char. Ended up with quite a few really good snapshots : http://i55.tinypic.com/i5bwba.jpg (only hairs change between snapshots)
It will be really hard to choose something the day incursion will be deployed Shocked

All women seem to have an hourglass shape, is it not possible to broaden or widen the shoulders and arms for a more 'inverted triangle' look? Not all women are hourglass after all

- Character movement during modeling is too much. Cam get anoying.
- Influence of the body weight feels too insignificant. A galente female seams to go from anorexic to under normal weight only. There seams to be no way to make rather fat people.
- I tried to do an older looking Caldari Deteis male. The only thing i get is a face of a 20 year old with some crinkles.

I missed out on V2, kinda wish I had tried it after seeing this version. Male characters seemed to improve a lot.

I realized my graphics settings were on low, so I deleted my rage comments and I went back and redid the comp page with high settings!

- I like the individual controls for each side of the face, but it would be nice if you could hold shift or something for symmetry.
- The mouth needs to be able to move up and down a little, and be squished in and out symmetrically from the center of the lips:

- If you can default graphics to highest possible settings off of detected hardware when entering character mode, you might avoid panic attacks like the one I had.

It's easier to use in this iteration. I would suggest an arrow, right and left, for the thumbnails, and perhaps not apply that selection until the user clicks the thumbnail with the focus, this will help speed up shadows ... which leads us to the next thing you wanted. ...


On a Nvidia 7800 GS, using shadows on high ...

Took a long time to get into the creator, the progress bar crawled.

Moving the model around was very slow and "sticky"

Hair models appear to only fully show up when shadows are enabled.

At some point, the Nvidia driver gave up the ship and died with a whimper,
