This should be a very simple change to make programatically:

when warp command is issued if ship has active drones then issue command "return to drone bay" to all active drones

The drones don't actually have to make it to the drone bay, for instance if your ship is fast and your drones are too far away they may still get left behind, but it would help reduce drone loss from client crashes and forgetfulness.

I don't like this idea so much.. I like the fact that I can scare somebody away and collect their drones. Got quite a stockpile going now of unloved drones.

I agree with the above poster. I like free drones.

Drones should have the ability to warp once and only to your ships beacon. Allowing you to reconnect to drones in space and recall.

Drones can't warp which is why are they are orphaned on warp-outs. There is a grace period of about 2-3 minutes I think, if you make it back on site in time then they can actually be recalled.

CSM has an active topic about being able to reconnect to drones after the fact and CCP has if, I remember correctly, voiced optimism about the idea.

Has to be done carefully though to avoid shenanigans which we players are quick to adopt, like:
Abandon drones close to distant target,
Launch new drones to bugger close target, scoop.
Reconnect to distant drones.

Agree with OP. This is so painfully simple and user-friendly. People who disagree simply want to capitalize on a poor design element in game... hardly a counterargument.

i like loling at swarms of ogre II when i scare someone.

still, they should put up a criminal countdown for scooping someone else's drones, just too easy the way it is

Indeed, Drones need an Overhaul. For a long time now.

Nope, not supported. If for nothing else because this -- so shortly after the removal of the learning skills -- would be the beginning of the end; which is to say, the continual dumbing down of EVE.

While removing the learning skills was done for good reason, we need to be extra vigilant to not further cater to everyone who wants things even simpler.

Solution:

Set the return drones to bay hot-key to ctrl+3. Then spam it whenever you are about the warp. Heck, you should have drones set to easy-to-use hot-keys anyway.

There is a forthcoming "reconnect" option.

coming soon.

While I am aware there is a development feature to reconnect to lost drones, I don't really think it is a great solution because unless I am mining or not engaged, the drones are rarely there when I get back. They have either been killed by the NPCs or scooped by the player. What if when you warp off because you crashed, all your ammo falls out of your cargo hold. It's like that except drones cost more than ammo.

The argument that it is a bad idea because you want to steal people's drones is not a valid point, even if it is nice when it happens. That is just a side effect of bad design.

The argument that you don't want it to change because you like your game mechanics cryptic, punishing and frustrating is ... let me just skip over that one.

Corner cases like the ECM drone scenario could be solved by making auto-return drones an option.

I didn't know you could hotkey the return drones command so I'll have to try that out but it does nothing for crashes.

"Dumbing down" the game is a good thing, it gives you more noobies to kill. Smile

Not supported.

Left over drones support our newbie brethren who salvage our grids after fleet fights. Tech II drones are good income for them.

I don't get wtf this "dumbing down of EVE" actually means. Cleaning up worthless ideas that did nothing to further advance the game, did not require any extra thinking on the part of users, and generally just acted as time consumers does not count as "dumbing down" something. In fact, quite the opposite.

We're in spaceships. We have little drones that are smart enough to engage in high-speed combat against an enemy, synchronously with 4 other little drones. Yet somehow, in the bulk of all this massive technology, it is impossible to think that these expensive little beasties would have a "zomg get back to the ship when it leaves!" failsafe built in?

And somehow, adding that in will "dumb down" EVE?

wtf?

Whatever you are smoking... share please. :)

It would be nice to let them warp to you. Often I find myself at the edge of a grid and some drone wanders off, and I can't find the stupid thing even though it's less than 20km away. :P

I'm new to this.game, and I say no. I'm a drone lover. But drones are like pets - it's Your job to look after them, so do it. If we want them to be smart enough to come back to you when you're going to warp, they may as well become rogue cause you practically were gonna leave them behind.

At least they're smart enough to attack things that attack them or their master, then return to you when finished.
