Many of you may be frequent readers of Kotaku or Gizmodo and have a Gawker account. Recently, the Gawker network was hacked and account information was compromised. This Gawker FAQ provides more information on the issue, and provides details on how you can change your Gawker password.

You may be wondering why we’re posting a note about Gawker’s hacking incident here. As it turns out, many people tend to use the same username and password across a variety of sites and games. This tends to not be the best thing to do, especially if you value your accounts and don’t wish to have it compromised because of you use the same account information across a variety of places.

This dev blog by CCP Screegs highlights many of the things you can do to protect your account against vulnerabilities and is filled with a lot of best practices you should use in order to protect your EVE Online account(s). We also detail potential account security risks in this thread, and encourage anyone who has concerns about their account security to submit a petition.

Today we will be sending out an email to several players as a courtesy notification that they may have been affected by the recent hacking of the Gawker web site. We are sending this email to you because we care about you and your account security. No, it does not mean that your EVE account has been accessed or compromised because of this incident. We are in no way affiliated with Gawker but we take account security seriously and would like to see everyone safe and unaffected by scurvy ridden internet hackers.

CCP Sreegs would also like to remind you that if you think you may have been affected by this that you should log into account management and change your password. Even if you don’t think you were affected it may be a good time to practice some good account security techniques and change your password anyways.

Fly safe and keep your accounts safer!
