I agree with Jim on the 2nd page. I would like to see more civilian and NPC life.

I also have a question. I looked through the 3 pages and did not see this.

After this new Character Creator is done and released, will the people with the old portrates get a "1 free update" coupon?

ThisQuestionQuestion question was probably asked awhile ago and i'm just curious but when will character creation be in Tranquility?

They have indicated that when the creator is release everyone old and new will have to use it to create their character and portrait.

Well... I am not sure if this is the right place... but I have some comments on the new editor (Sisi build 214773 at time of this posting). But first of all: This is the most advanced and best character creator I have seen so far in any game.
There were some great ones in other games' beta versions that have been replaced by easier ones...
So to my first point: PLEASE don't do that. Maybe add another mode for easy creation, but please leave the complex one in... (it would of course also be great to have a way to somewhat "import" the old character into the creator, since I have no clue on how to mimic my old portrait... and I somewhat like it)
What I think should be improved:
  • The men skin is a bit plastic like. It is a little to shiny, I think. (Oh well... you could implement body hair to compensate for that, but... ;) )

  • The "muscularity" and "weight" controls change much too little. When you gain weight, not only your waist expands. If you train your muscles, your whole body will probably change. (Oh and muscles are heavier than fat, but thats probably not the purpose of the rulers ;)). And how do I create a character that is big AND muscular? (They look awful right now if you set both rulers to maximum.)
  • I would like a "freeze" button, that allows me to change the shape of the face without the char always moving around ;)

Keep on the great work Smile

yes i would like to see more work on the weight and muscularity options. i would like to make my character as fat as possible =). also the weight tab seems to not affect the face, neck and upper mid section too much. all in all would like to see more flexibility and smoothness with the mesh.

well, suppose i post some impressions here about the character creation here.

first, congratulations to the people that worked hard on developing the character creation, there's lot of work involved, and it seems coming up in a good way.
the new option sliders seem to be a lot better than the initial ones.

* first of, i really hope people can redo they're character face for a wile, after all, they will be wearing it for a long time i suppose, and there might be some things that don't work out as expected. wile in a new character, you can delete and redo the new character, on the old, where stuck with what we redo on the new character creator.
sounds unimportant ? well, there seems to be some quality gap betwin the low textures and high textures mode, which leads to some big differences in the outcome of the avatar look result, especially in the hair section.
i was trying to get a red hair and ended up with a strange blond, after clicking accept.

* having a button/option period grace to re-do the face for some time, will avoid a lot of angry/disappointed/emo-raging petitioners.
at least having the option to re-do the character, before entering world.

* also, what i think quite important :
having an option to just "Freeze" the avatar's movement, wile creating the face. yes, it might look a cool feature, but when you're trying to make small details on an already tricky to do face, that you try to achieve a look, and the frikin avatar don't stay still, with small movements, making it harder to obtain that perfect detail .... it's just as annoying as a dentist or a hair stillest or a make up artist, trying to do they're work and the frikin costumer doesn't stand still for you to make you're work, which only Leeds to feeling like smack him cold so you can finish you're job. Twisted Evil

* in the eyes selection, the several differences betwin the different eyes outcome, doesn't seem very obvious, and takes kinda of a try and trial to see which one is the pretended.

* the hair selection seems to have a huge difference betwin the high textures setting and the low texture setting, with low textures settings seeming to have a hair sample texture that looks awful, like if someone had picked up some hairs from the barbershop ground and just made all the wigs with it ... all looking a like ... no idea at all, of the looks in high quality.
actually, don't' try to re-do you're avatar in low texture mode, it looks noting like the high texture mode at all. (maybe a warning about the abysmal difference would be nice)

* why all underwear is the same colour !? can't we have the option to select different colours ? yes, probably won't matter ever, but would still be nice to be able to select the underwear colour, for future purposes.

* there's 2 bugs at least.
when switching betwin the textures mode, it becomes unavailable to reshape the avatar, as the pointer cannot select anything.
(work around so far: change some atribute in the avatar right side panel)
* changing the eyebrows type, will not show them changing colour.
(work around: touch the "UI character facial Hair colour" to see the selected hair colour applied.

* the colour pallet for the eyes/hair/makeup/eyeliner/blush/lipstick is a bit small and bearably seen, the colour icons should have 2x more area.
the.

* cloths/shoes seem all a like and there seems to be no racial traditional cloths/tattoos/ ornaments, which is quite a shame, hope it can be included in the future.
(maybe they can be aquired in the future trought :
ingame quests/shop/special editions/eve shop/market/tournament prises/eve special edition/season).
there should be a entering room, that would allow to change ornaments/makeup/cloths

* the glasses ornaments available are quite inappropriate in they're stile, almost all prity much suck ... seemed nice in the cartoonist look, but here, you would die, if cough with those ugly models.

more ideas to come.

continuation :

cloths :
"top" has the x to remove selected
"bottom" does not have the x to remove selected
"outer" has button x to remove selected
"Feet" does not have the x to remove selected
"Glasses" has button x to remove selected

"Feet" the boots have a slight colour difference betwin the sample image and the actual texture.

there's a button on the top right side called : "Reload menu debug" it's occluded by the avatar creation menu.

* bug * In "makeup" -> "Eye shadow", there's 2 palettes for the eye shadow colour, when tryng to reach the sidebar for the opacity, the palette fades away.

* bug * "cloths" when removing "top" there will be a a top texture renderization that will keep up part of the "top" cloth selected .. it actually could be nice to have that, as an extra option for cloths.

* really would like to have the option to change the light focus, in the character creation menu, could have some sort of circle, like the colour skin option slider like.

* talking about colour skin slider ... would be nice to have more colour options.

*boobs frame needs a couple more polygons and a another biger size YARRRR!!

there's an experience :
http://img651.imageshack.us/img651/2134/avatar1pa.jpg

as you can see, there's a "ghost" top with the belly button showing up ... it's the remaining of the top shirt. it will disappear later.

also, being able to change the background, wile in character creation, would be nice, and maybe be able to come back to this room occasionally, to change some changeable aspects, already mentioned above, like a "Dressing Room"

by the way, is it my impression or does the character generated in low settings texture will be maintained and not updated in high settings texture !? it would be very important to know that, as the avatar outcome is quite different in each setting Shocked

While I must commend the technical accomplishment that this software represents I find it a little disapointing.

The editor seems to be only able to create rather beautiful people. Everyone seems to be 6ft tall and have a body mass index in the "normal" range. The largest nose is hardly Cerano de Bergerac and the largest chin hardly Jimmy hill or even Bruce Forsythe. (Sorry to non-uk residents, I couldn't think of an internationally recognised chin miester.) Eye size can hardly be varied at all. Head size is fixed. Ears variation is too small and worst of all, faces are all symetrical.

So far all of the characters I've made and all those I've seen would have easily got work on a daytime soap opera.

The old character portraits currently in use show a ridiculous level of variety as would be expected across a galaxy of 44,351 solid planets. Some are incredibly ugly some fit and attractive. This I think shows what is wanted by the community.

Oh. and did I mention height?

On the whole, this tool is incredible, but ...
Please consider the following:
1. Body shapes are too ideal - some verirty is needed - taller, shorter etc
2. Skin tone and racial features are too soft - make them more distinct.
3. Where are the tats?
4. Clothing and ornimintation - everybody looks like they're going sking in Iceland. Please more choices. This one element more than any other is a way to express indivduality.
5. Everyone is young and beautiful. What if you want to be old and ugly?
6. The posing tool for the pix is clunky and hard to use. Some characters look like they're falling out of the shot.
7. We should be allowed a couple of practice runs with the tool. I didn't get the hang of it until I did the third toon.
Keep up the good work.

You can practice. On SiSi now, or just by creating a new character on live...

I was thinking...
This new avatars is so cool. Then maybe we should be able to see a big portrait in game, just like "preview" button near a ship icon. And animated also, as in editor.

btw, in a portrait stage, a light source is moving with a chest. I think that is not very good when you want to move a chest only. Maybe we should have an option to set a manual angle of light sources...

As far as I'm concerned, nothing. I have a cracking pair of legs.

So why do I have to cover them in combat trousers? I'm not a combat girl - I sit in station all day looking at Facebook and staring into spaceRolling Eyes, you know, the usual office admin stuff.

By the way, will you be incorporating Carbon technology to make space look better and higher res for those of us with higher end hardware?

I'm thinking of ...

  • planet textures & bumpmaps - increasing res when you zoom in, or are close up to them - I would like to see the moons get bumpmaps and be all realistic looking

  • fixing and improving shadows

  • higher ship and station polygons

  • higher ship & station textures

I agree.

I read somewhere around that the Apex libraries used for the Carbon Character Creator won't run with Ati cards or with very limited performance/detail.
Could you give an insight about this ? Is it true ?

1) Ati is dead..they are called AMD these days.
2) APEX is NVIDIA software, so it only runs on NVIDIA GPU...or x86 CPU(at reduced performance compared to a GPU performance) for now.
Blame AMD for having a **** poor GPGPU track.

Really? Well, I have x86 CPU I suppose, but if I have a new ~$300 card from AMD I would expect it to run flawlessly on any newly developed graphical tool/game. What exactly are these Apex libraries being used for? The winking/facial movement, the high res textures, what?

I received an e-mail from CCP that I should try out the new character creation system on the test server. So I did.

Overally I am impressed, but I found several issues... I also made a bug report of them. (Not sure what CCP's policy is - eg. do they want bug reports about these things or I should rather post them here, but to be on the safe side I did both.)

1. There is a circular colur selector in the "Complexion" pane. No matter what colour I select, nothing happens at all.

2. When I select an eye colur, the change only shows up when I select another eye style. (Then I can switch back to the previous one and it shows up there too.)

3. Selecting the hair color works perfectly, but the colours on the selector look a bit desaturated (unlike how they look on the character). Overall, the hair colours should be more vivid and there should be more options. (For example, no matter how I combined the primary and secondary colours, I couldn't make a realistic red hair.)

4. When adjusting the makeup, the colour selector dialogs have the same issue as described for the eye colour selector. (All of the dialogs under the "Makeup" pane suffer from this.) In addition to this, it is not possible to adjust the opacity of the eye shadow - when bringing the mouse over that area, the dialogs just fades away.

5. After selecting a top cloth, pressing the X button in there doesn't remove it completely.

6. The hair of the character vibrates in a weird fashion. This is especially noticable for long hairstyles. When disabling the physically simulated clothes and hair, the hair disappears from the character on my computer [GeForce GT 240M], and nothing happens on my friend's machine [Ati Radeon].

7. I didn't find a way to adjust the following: height, appearance of eyelashes, size of head, size of eyes

8. In the photo creation mode, it is nearly impossible to create a symmetric smile. Plus, there is no undo button for the face mimics.

9. The photos are somehow lifeless and don't look like the 3D character. (I'm not sure, but they look as if they weren't antialiased.) Freckles don't appear on them at all. (They do appear on the larger portrait when logging in though.)

10. The character creator should show how the portrait will appear in various sizes: eg. chat windows, etc. (Maybe there should be an option to tweak them, because most of the images I was able to create looked well in large, but poorly in small sizes.)

I have tried over many hours to re create many of my toons using the new Character creator, it is missing one key feature which is it's best attempt at replicating what you already have created in the previous version of the tools, just the face alone would save many people time and effort across many accounts, and it should be the way this new tool is tested. If it cannot create what you already have then its not finished. The previous data was tossed as soon the person clicked finished so all the 100's of changes are gone. I don't mind saving my previous image and using it as a reference I just spent a few hours trying to replicate and improve what I had before, its impossible the features are missing in the face to get the shapes that I had before.

I went to great effort with the previous tool to create an image that was the desired result for that particular personality type that I was creating, it seems impossible to re-create it in the new tool, overall it seems more limited then the previous tool which has been stated in other comments, and was better overall at creating unique characters, every character looks the same here.

While i'm quite a fan of the new charakter creator, it has some flaws, which would be easy to fix(and i'm particullary talking about the poor variety of sebiestor haircolors - 7 is just not enough).
However, there will almost certainly be no button that tries to recreate your old character for you, simply because that's not a trivial task - it's not only kind of a knapsack-problem, it would also need some serious image recognition algorithms.

I don't think so. The current characters were also created with some parameters which translated into our faces. It shouldn't be too hard to port the old settings to the new system.
