These characters look SO cool!

One thing I have trouble with on SISI is when you grab a spot on the face and move the mouse up or down it doesn't always move the face. Sometimes it seems like you have to move the mouse diagonally or left and right. It may just be me. But it would be nice to get some kind of visual guide that shows you which direction to move the facial features.

Speaking of normals, I'm hoping there are more hair styles and accessories to pick from in the final release.

Just curious - once this is implemented, will our in game portraits still be static snapshots or might they be animated?

For that matter, how about forum portraits?

Do you really think they're going to allow us to animate our avatars ingame? What purpose would that serve?

Simple: Positive player enjoyment with no negative effect.

In other words, a freebie for those who want to use it.

Granted, it may not be easily done, but still a neat idea.

You want to get rid of node lag, so you... suggest animated avatars???

Will there be a auto remorf so when another's ship is about to pop the pilot gets an a OhCrap Shockedlook on his face that lasts, ? 5 min's

Can this also work with ships so we can tweak them? I know that is a bit much but we can wish.

This!

for those of us that aren't "electronic artists" recreating something reasonably close to our old face will be almost impossible.

But our faces are us, like our names. We have worn them for years. Changing them, at least for me, will break one of the ties to the game.

Would it be possible to implement a feature to import as much as possible of the old face as a starting template?

Ah, yes. The inevitable wiki link. I am familiar with Bump Mapping. But that doesn't necessarily explain why they shouldn't be touched by CCP's art department. To my understanding, all of the ships have a normal map to their model, so that doesn't explain why he thinks they are evil.

It is a cool devblog. Too bad it's not leading to anything relevant to EVE. Everyone will look almost the same. Frozen one-time character portraits will mean all the cool 3D sculpting tools will get used exactly once by each character. Not to mention Incarna doesn't even have any defined gameplay as of yet.

There's a CSM proposal right now to have pod killmails show what implants were destroyed. If that happens there will be a surge in pod killing. The only way the new character creator will have any relevance to EVE at all is if floating corpses in space appear maimed with grotesque injuries.

Otherwise, there is no point in any of this. In other games? Sure, beautiful work. Absolutely. It doesn't really work in EVE though IMO, and people will be clamoring for the old character creator in less than 6 months.

Nice cool stuff, but what does this have to do with eve? Who looks at the avatars really?

Fix the broken things before adding more stuff that won't be developed further.

I remember mentioned somewhere that they reworked the way player icons showed up. Previously, they were generated by the client at runtime, but now they're just static images being loaded from the server.

I would hope we have animated avatars in the future. I'm not sure if this would conflict with the new way they load avatars, or add to the client lag. If there was a way to save avatar animation data to a compressed format that gets loaded in on the fly, then you could have pre-created avatars, with full range of motion and emotion, being loaded dynamically. No need for the client to piece together everything on the fly, just load in a special config/data file, and voila - you have animated high-res characters!

I also want to view someone's full body avatar in their info. Very Happy

I'm curious to know whether there will be a 'character viewer' type of screen in-game, along the same lines as the current ship viewer (where you can rotate/zoom etc...)

I can imagine more than a few ppl being caught-out in losec by the odd pirate because they were so busy eying-up the avatar, they forgot to check 'directional'.

By the way, will you be incorporating Carbon technology to make space look better and higher res for those of us with higher end hardware?

I'm thinking of ...

  • planet textures & bumpmaps - increasing res when you zoom in, or are close up to them - I would like to see the moons get bumpmaps and be all realistic looking

  • fixing and improving shadows

  • higher ship and station polygons

  • higher ship & station textures

  • more NPC shuttles and civilian craft being flown around stations and stargates - I keep forgetting there's a whole world of people that aren't pod-pilots

Of course some of these things aren't related to Carbon - just thought I'd lip a couple in there Very Happy

OMG Swidgen That gives me an idea. I think I will make it my mission in life to get this passed. lol

Here it is.
When you get pod killed your full body avatar gets ejected into space as your corpse. All they would have to do (maybe wait until incarna is out) is create a stock set of modifications that the server makes to the body using a slimmed down version of the character creator. Like making the skintone a few points more grey and adding freckles.

The modified avatar/copse could be created as you undock to keep from creating lag during fights. It could then be stored as an item wherever the copses are already stored, ready to be placed on the grid in the event you get killed.

I'm no programmer so I guess it could be a lot more trouble then I make it out to be. But it would be SO cool to have real corpses.

And I'd like to add the ability to zoom closer onto your ship. For some reason the scale of these ships bugs me cause I can't zoom in enough.

What the hell is going on here? It took to the second page before the thread met it's benchmarks: Chribba's post, and someone complaining that they shouldn't be working on this, but on their personal pet peeve. (really? killmails? you think there's a definite connection between the graphics artists making the new character generator, and the guys who would be adding implants to killmails?)

I think this is an awesome first step, and this is the first thing that has made me really WANT to get incarna released. And even more so to see how this will be incorporated into WoD.

A normal is a vector (direction plus magnitude) that is attached to a polygon so that the renderer knows which direction the polygon is facing. Messing with it wouldn't let you do anything cool, it would just screw up the way that the lighting looks on that polygon.

For example, if you drag the bridge of the nose, what do you do with glasses? Shouldn't they move too? Yes, the solution is to make glasses inherit the morphs of the faces without distorting them. Not trivial to do, but nothing our MacGyver-esque tech artists couldn't handle.

Except it has been done for years now with other programs, inheriting 'morphs'.

Good blog, nothing to add except : Will we get non-grey clothing as well ?

I'm pretty sure the grey colour in the last build was the first step to have a colour selection for each piece of clothing.

Indeed.. WTB colour - imagine the girl from the blog in lime, yellow or red leather clothes!!

Solution/business model:
1) some gifted gal/guy does recreate the personality on his account on an empty slot
2) this char get's transferred to the account of the not gifted person and isk is paid for the work (upfront check of looks easily possible, might need CCP backup to avoid scams)
3) profit
4) once on account the not gifted person can swap chars as usual
5) all happy

I have one question about character creation:

- When creating a snapshot (an image that will be shown in my Character Sheet and on the forums), will it be rendered locally (on my computer and based on my in-game graphic settings) or will it pass the parameters to the server (textures, morphs, shader layers...) and be rendered there?

Short question would be: Is the character creator dependent on my computer's rendering capabilities?

If it is, I should better let know some friend of mine with better rig that I need to use his computer for a while when character creator gets to TQ. Very Happy

You know CCP, with all this messing around with character potraits, it might be worth while to explore the option to "Transfer Character Potraits" for isk/PLEX. There are a lot of talents around and I'm sure there are also lots of players who cba to create their own potraits.
