Add 3 tabs to the overview.

These will be

Fleet Overview
Wing Overview
Squad Overview.

Only available when in a fleet.

These overviews will not be modifiable by the squad member.

Take as an example Squad Overview.

The squad commander will be able to apply a overview setting to the Squad Tab.
Squad members will get this set up via the server ( dedicated fleet node to reduce lag implications ).

Note on what is transfered.
Filter information is transferred ( All members see the same set of objects on grid )
Colouration will not be transfered ( squad member keeps his own coloration ).
Columns and sorting will not be transfered ( squad member keeps his own preferences ).

Gets an extra column or highlight color.
This shows the targets locked by the squad commander.


Pros.

Take out the hassle of explaining 1000 times to different recruits how to set up there overview.

Squad members will see exactly what the squad commander see's when fighting on grid.

Squad commander is tasked with killing frigs ?
No problem squad commander sets his overview to show just these.

Members get to see just frigs on this tab too without having to alter there own overview settings.
Identifying targets for members becomes simpler.
Esp when they can see what there squad commander has locked.


Cons.
would cause uber lag if not implemented correctly.


Wing and Fleet overviews would work in a similar manner.
With Wing commanders and Fleet commanders picking the settings and tranmitting there locked target information.

Nice idea & very useful.

it's basically allowing the fleet leadership to export overview settings and transmit to the fleet, and this is probably the way it would have to be done to avoid constantly checking to see if the FC has altered their settings.

I would see it working as below (similar for wing/squad commanders):
  1. FC adjusts their overview
  2. new overview menu option "transmit to fleet" (cooldown timer before can be transmitted again?)
  3. fleet members load overview settings "Fleet commander"
  4. if someone new joins the fleet after transmission, they can still load the most recently transmitted settings.


edit- Just thought of a potential problem: What happens if someone's position in a fleet changes? (gets moved from one squad to another for example). Do they keep the previous "squad" setting or does the overview automatically change to that of the new squad?

I was thinking of it being more automatic.
Automatic download of squad commanders setting when you join a squad.
Automatic download of squad commanders locked targets when he locks them.

Replaces the rather clunky broadcast target mechanic.
Presents the information in the relevant place ( in the overview ) not a seperate window.

With ccp's ability to use different nodes for different functions and set limit of squad/wing/fleet sizes it should not cause too much lag ??? :)

Realistically, how often would the FC/WC/SC need to update the overview after the initial "transmit" from each?

If it isn't often, then automatic update isn't really necessary. It would be nice, but someone more techy than me would be need to answer how much load any automatic updating would cause.

I would like to support this idea. I think its both highly usefull and realistically implementable.

I would like to add to it...
atm we have max 5 tabs for the overview. which we can customise for different tasks.
I have one for salvageing, mining, missions, pvp(small gang so only need one atm), escape (shows only gates stations and bubbles, usefull when trying to navigate jita if nothing else)and everything on grid. erm thats 6. oh yes i have to open overveiw settings and switch what one of the tabs does for one of them.
idea. how about 5 tabs you can just click on like normal then a 6th (or make it 4 with a fith if you don't want to add another tab) wich has a drop down selection of every other tab configuration you have saved and you click on the one you want.

that way you have 4 or 5 one click tabs for things you want to switch between really fast. and 1 everything else tab wich you use to switch between all your other saved configurations. (this could contain your current fleet/wing/squad overview as outlined in the op so all people would have to do is when in fleet go into this tab and select the current squad, wing or fleet overveiw as desired(posibly with an option to add that configuration to their saved overviews))

This functionality allready exists dude.
You left click the little white sideways arrow in the top left of the overview window.
You get a list of all your overview setting.
Click the one you want and it loads into the current tab.

Or am I mis understanding you ?
