This morning I was getting a friendly windows popup box saying that ExeFile.exe has hit some bad mojo and has to be put down like a dog. This was right after an Ubuntu system update that required a reboot.

I dropped to a console (ctrl-alt-F1), logged in as root, and told the system:

service gdm stop

and then I went to reinstall the NVIDIA driver. It complained that the nvidia kernel module was stuck and couldn't be dynamically unloaded. I confirmed this because when I told the system:

rmmod nvidia

it replied that the module was in use.

I rebooted, repeated the process without logging into my desktop session first, and the NVIDIA modules reinstalled fine. EVE works afterward.

Posting in case this was caused by the morning's Ubuntu update.

X is still running if you press ctrl-alt-f1...

Odd that they didn't reinstall properly though, you should just get a "you need to reboot in order to use the new module" (or similar) message...
