Ok I was thinking about this the other day, yeah odd I know :)
The one that jumps out at me is a strange one but true I think, have a little read and tell me what you think.
Microchips/microelectronics destroyed manned space travel.
Now the explanation, we as a race went to the moon without all the new fangled tech we have now, ok it was shoestring and dodgy in places but it worked. Now if you remove the invention of microchips in the 1970s from the space industry then cheap disposable satelites become impossible, therefore global communications dont work, right?
A global communication system relying on analoge computors becomes an interesting idea because you cant pack them up in a small satelite and throw them up 50 at a time and expect them to work for 30+ years, they need maintenance, they need human attention.
Enter the solution of a few large manned satelites as per Arthur C Clarkes initial idea for communication satelites from the 50s. When you have a world relying on a human population in space for such a basic modern "neccessity" as international phonecalls or the intereb tubes, then space travel becomes common and regular.
This leads to greater ability to go further, having the technology to regularly support a human population in orbit makes travel to the moon and beyond easier and more acceptable to the public.
Damn microchips, damn them all to hell, (in the past ofc)
I'm sure you OOP types have other inventions that destroyed the world type ideas, tell me about them :)

Edited by: Zyck on 26/10/2010 14:45:05 Without the microchip making efficient computers is also nearly impossible and doing the calculations to get a spacecraft to beyond the moon becomes ridiculous beyond what you could imagine. Not to mention that, in general, the state of electronics as a whole stays extremely primitive.
I personally don't think any invention has ruined the world. All technological progress is good progress in my eyes. |

YES OH GOD YES. Also, microchips/electronics make space travel cheaper. Without "micro" computers the Space shuttles and things like them could never exist because the calculations involved in returning form orbit with the intent of reusing the transportation device are far, far too immense. |

Microchips also produce more hazardous by-products per weight in their production than anything else, and they're the most mass produced item on Earth.

There is only one invention in all the history of mankind that ruined the world so far. It's called software patents.

Sorry to burst your bubble mate, but without integrated circuits the space program would have stopped at shooting a few astronauts into earth orbit and that would be it. The Apollo program would have been impossible without the Apollo guidance computer, which was made light enough to be usable because of integrated circuits. Not to mention the Space Shuttle. Once could actually say that space programs (together with their sister ICBM programs) were actually what made the microchip so available and cheap so fast. So in summation, manned space travel, as we know it today and as we imagine it in the future, would be impossible without microchips (unless we discover something that would allow for even more integration and miniaturization). |

Inventions that ruined the world:
Democracy - for being the "One Ring" of governments where people think it's oh so precious and thinking that they could only do good with it, but through them, only evil comes and they never realize that. At least with a tyrant you know you are screwed and you have only one ass hat to hang instead of at least 51 percent of your neighbors trying to rob you with their vote.
Box magazines for rifles - stripper and endbloc clips with charging bridges were the best idea: low cost, low weight, and easy to produce. Advances in this concept would have greatly improved it along with the material sciences of production. But the military contractors had it their way instead, and the last great rifle, the M1A, has it, and all technology could have stopped right there and the world would be a good place.

Ironically today at work I saw a man with a prosthetic leg, and this wasn't one of those simple plastic diddy's made to look like a real leg, it was one of those really high tech ones that are specially engineered which probably cost him an arm and a leg to get (hardy har har). But it got me to thinking about the latest Deus Ex Trailer and I think if prosthetics can get to be that advanced people would probably actually pay to lose a limb in place of something more advanced than their simple arm. |

What you mean is Religious Fanatics - or Fanatics in general. Or Religions thatsupport themselves as the "one true all others are heathens". The main advantage and disadvantage of Religions are that they are a holding cell for culture, insuring the beliefs of a nation continue on but it also holds the cultures back. In this case we have out grown many of the beliefs of out religions and they have become a mockery for many but still hold a cirtain amount of truth (i.e. 10 commandments etc). Also microchips you owe a lot to, like this forum/game/sa interweb in general. Also they made it safer to travel space by not needing to be there in person. My choice of what has ruined the world, would be huge corporations and capitalism in general. which also ties in with Greed in general, which if the whole global warming thing is to be believed will result in destroying the world. Also global warming. |

Wonderbras
From initial visual impression when you think you are going to be treated with an ample set of boobies you are disappointed on when inspecting the merchandise you find a far smaller set of mammaries.
A law should be passed that women who wear wonderbras during romantic congress be fined by having a horrifically large set of floppy doppilys smashed across their face. |

Mhm strange explanation in the OP.
More likely, the prohibitive costs of covering it all up and the advance in technologies to detect manipulated images/audio destroyed faked manned space travel. ;-)
