Will the eveonline site get a makeover in general during this time?

The EVE online website as a whole will be getting reworked over time, piece by piece bringing all of it in synch with what we are doing with EVE Gate. It won't be a single launch event such as with an expansion like Incursion but rather a steady migration of content and features, upgrading each as we go.

  1. I care about text chat far more than voice chat, as many other players have also made clear for some time. We already have Ventrilo for out-of-game voice. Give us corp and alliance chat in EVE Gate as a first pass, please. And eventually we'd like access to all the channels I could normally join.

  2. Why are iterations on the EVE Gate interface so slow? Given agile development practices, we should be seeing lots of small, incremental updates, rather than huge pushes that take months to develop. This really concerns me, because EVE Gate development has not at all lived up to initial expectations.

  3. We need a mobile interface. We needz it. (And if you make it iPhone only, you'll have seriously missed the point.)

1. yep agreed, in this case due to Vivox helping us a metric ton we are simply able to bring a voice solution to you much faster and we couldn't pass up the opportunity to bring you guys more features. Chat is definitely on the to do list but I don't have a timeframe on it in part because there are bigger questions pending about improving/refactoring chat as a whole. We definitely want to add it asap though

2. in part because the early architecture / build and deploy processes are too tightly tied to EVE server builds. Part of the work leading up to this expansion is a lot of back end and process re-factoring which will allow us to more quickly release changes to the web portion of EVE Gate where we don't need client builds or major back end changes.

3. Agreed. There is a bigger question about mobile development strategies here that we are wrestling with but we purposely built EVE Gate with a service oriented approach so we will be able to utilize the service layers for the API, mobile applications or other purposes. So we definitely want to go down this path and have laid the ground work for it (and I agree not just iOS) but I don't have a timeline for you right now.

Great news except for that one thing that everyone else has already spotted:

Public by default is a horribly stupid idea. Don't do it.
No, really. Don't.
Don't be stupid.

I definitely will Mynxee and the teams were recently talking about it as Dr Eyjo reminded us.

We have added another few knobs and buttons to your privacy settings that will allow you to open up parts of your profile to visitors who aren‘t logged in to EVE Gate. This will allow you to send a link to your profile to non EVE players and show off your EVE alter ego: if your profile is set as „public", visitors to the site will be able to view your profile as if they were logged in. „Private" profiles, meanwhile, will still be visitable in a limited form, as your EVE Gate profile page will double up as your forum user page. If your profile is „private", visitors not logged in will see only your portrait, name, and corp and alliance membership.

Does this mean that I have to redo the privacy settings of all my characters that I care about when this patch goes live?

Why isn't EVE-gate set to private by default without this grace period mumbo jumbo.

I think it's ridiculous that we as the community are forced to go to EVE-gate eventhough a part of us doesn't want this Facebook for EVE in the first place. Take a look at facebook, even they have been forced by law to set private as default. Bad CCP hmmmmmkey!

By default, profiles will be set to „public", but there will be a grace period after the expansion launches where all profiles will be private - this gives you time to decide whether or not you want your extended information to be available to the wider world, and to configure your profile accordingly. Corps and Alliances, not having privacy settings of their own, will all be treated as „public" once the grace period expires, it goes without saying that the corp member lists are never shown in public view and as always only viewable by members of the corp. Trial accounts are always „private" while on trial, to prevent possible abuse.

Bad CCP, Bad! Stop acting like every other ****** bag company/owner out there and think of the people who pay to use your products and services and let them choose how to manage their information instead of forcing us to deal with your stupid *** choices.

Also I still want the stupid calendar to have an option to add my ingame time related events like mission expiration, offer expiration, industry job completion, etc, ALL as PRIVATE, for my eyes only via Evegate.

Nice, space book with voice chat :O Now I'm looking forward to this. Would probably encourage more usage of eve gate at this rate.

Still can't use eve gate features with people who aren't blue to me in game for targeting purposes. It's still mostly useless to me :(

EVE Gate really needs a standing system that is separate from target identification.

Does this mean that forums will be offline too when server is down? If so... FAIL, the forums are the only way to be informed when unexpected comes and breaks EVE and also are the place to go while you wait for EVE to go up when it happens to coincide downtime with your playing time.

The current plan is for the forums to be up during downtime as long as the backend database (TQ) itself is up - it's needed to do login/authentication at least. When larger patches are going that require the DB to be offline the forum will be down when the DB is down. We have a little work remaining to get there but that is the current plan. That would mean some functions of EVE Gate (which the forums will link to) may be down and disabled during those times but the forums themselves will be there for your use.

The plan is to keep the existing forum up in read-only mode so you can reference/copy over the content and we will start the new forums up from scratch. Porting over the content from a wholly different database structure was a nightmarish consideration to say the least

Yeah, it would take a computer to do something like that.... But it's not really important anyway, so I won't gripe more than that.

When you ask a question like that in a forum where a staff member is actively posting and they continually ignore you it means they're gagged by the marketing department. They're doing it because some flaming a**hole thinks it will make them more money by forcing users to interact with the new content. Unfortunately said flaming hole has their hand up the tail-end of their boss, so we all have to change yet another privacy setting.

If you think about it many expansions or 'upgrades' have resulted in forcing some new thing on the player. This kind of thinking is born out of the demon-worshipping practices known as "marketing". These people cannot be reasoned with as they have no souls and are in fact automatons in service of satan and possibly Micro$oft.

LOL, should probably edit this post to say that I am generally pleased with the news apart from that.

I might be completely missunderstanding this, but does that mean that noone can get more information from this 'public' profile than what they can get now when logged in into Gate?

Because that is what it says.

But then there would be no reason for everybody to go bad**** insane about it as that would mean the only people you would have to be afraid of are those not having an Eve Account, and while i know we all are special, most non-eve-players will give a **** for anything your profile pages. And if they wanted, they could create an Account.

I've said it in the other dev-blog threads and I'll say it again here (at the risk of starting to sound like a fanboi), but the amount of dev-feedback and responses to questions is great.

Devs are replying within a day or so and are addressing many of the serious questions and concerns put forward by players.

Good, good.

There is no rational reason to make the default settings public, other than to fabricate usage statistics based on everyone logging in to change it.

What made you decide that profiles should be public by default?

EVE Voice integration

We've been partnering with Vivox, which brings us EVE Voice, to create a first iteration of accessing EVE Voice through EVE Gate. This allows you to both listen and speak to your friends on the go, without having to load up a full EVE Client. Just open EVE Gate, and you're all set!

This specific feature will not go live in conjunction with the Incursion launch but can be expected to be available just a few weeks after the expansion is in your hands. This is a very exciting feature we're really looking forward to bringing to you.

Browse EVE Gate on your smartphone and connect.
Speak to your EVE buddies via EVE Gate.

Android, IOS, Windows 7
We need apps for those OS´s

Allow someone that is home online in EVE to call someone that have there smartphone via EVE Gate App.

Still not actually useful to someone that plays EVE. Still has less features than facebook did on day one. Let us know when either of those things changes.

marketing, or they actually use that for their "metrics". Hey let's set this to public, then poll it, oh hey look how mny people do it so it was worth it.

Can't imagine they just can't even see privacy analogies, or even consideration, or the lessons from the last time.
