http://conceptships.blogspot.com

Awesome, awesomeness. Some of these guys work for movie studios and game publishers etc.
Good luck if you can beat people who do spaceship concept art for a LIVING! Shocked

We have at least one advantage: We know the game. We know how each race looks acts and operates. We know their ship designs and we know how they'd design a NEW ship approximately. This will be a pretty large factor in judging: IS it a Caldari, Gallente, Amaar, Ducttape ship?

I think Konoch has it bang on. We have some great artists within the community. We know the material inside and out and we know how things should look to fit within the game.

I do have some reservations though. The shortlisting of the last 15 will be done entirely by the deviantart crew and not by ccp. In that regard how relevant any game knowledge will be is questionable.

One thing though if it's somebody who isn't an eve player who wins I hope to god he/she brings something really special to the table as the rest of us players will be utterly gutted :).

Well reading the DA terms it goes like this:

Your work will be judged on the basis of Originality, Creative Presentation of the Task, and Technical Artistic Skill.
15 Semi-Finalists will be selected by a panel of full-time deviantART Staff.

Notice it doesnt say your work will be judged on how it fits with the games established stylings. I can well imagine 15 deviantART staff looking at picture for the best baceship and liking the ones that sport chrome and fins because of the
beautiful highlights on the red nacelles or the way the x-wing shape goes with the pilots dark helmet.ugh

That would be an out and out disaster for DA. CCP wouldnt accept any of them at all and i'll expound on this in a moment

Well in all honesty we have no clue wether the ship is actually going to be featured as any playable race's ship. It just might be an excentric ship like the Apotheosis or perhaps the Primae. A one off release as a gift is the most likely prospect of this contest. I'm also already half way of giving up after seeing some of the renders on DA. All i can use is pencil and paper and ofcourse it's hard to get the same amount of depth detail and perspective as it is with 3ds max or whatever.

The timing of this contest says otherwise. The announcement came at the same time as the announcement of the next expansion. To add a new ship in this game this would be the PERFECT time for concept art/renderings in the Dev cycle. This has the potential to not be a gift ship but a fully loaded fully used ship within the game. The timing is just too good to ignore.

Based on THIS i have to believe CCP is putting a LOT of faith in DA to pull the right 15 out of the box.

I could be wrong in all of this but the timing adds up (including the end date) and the style of ship they're allowing (anything sub capital) Would suggest to me that CCP wants a player designed ship as a mainstay of the game.

Paper and pencil is fine, don't give up!

Good concepts do not need big amounts of rendering etc. Just focus on the essential parts. Also the semi-finalists will win $50 iTunes credits.

And every legitable entry will recieve a special gift from EVE!

Thnx for the push on going on, i hardly do it for iTunes though Razz It's just a shame that renders have it on "easy" mode as far as view sides go Razz Turn the render, snapshot, paste and presto Laughing

The exact wording is 'asset' so there may only be the prize ship flying around/spinning in a station with it just added into the game code.

The 1st Place winner will have their ship added to the premiere space MMOG (Massively Multiplayer Online Game), EVE Online where countless pilots will build and fly the winners' creation.

That means there will be bpo's peeps.

Seeing the conceptships.org site, I have a little more hope. Because frankly the technical skill on display (edit: in the contest, so far) is laughable in most cases. Before you excoriate me, I can't draw either, but I don't go posting my crap in public places. Unless it's as a joke.

I would really like one of Eve's own to win this with some fantastic gobsmacker of a beautiful ship, but frankly my biggest criteria is 'oh god please not another eyesore I'll have to see in large numbers every day'.

Keep in mind that unless somebody just "happens" to have something ready to go that meets the necessary specs it is probably going to take a while for the better entries to show up.

This. Not only is it going to take a lot of time for the best ones (and probably the eventual winner) to even be finished, why would they want to post anything a month early and give everyone else ideas?

As for the idea that deviantart's poor judges will ruin the contest:

1) EVE is kind of popular, you know, so it's not like it would be hard to find judges who are familiar with both EVE and scifi art in general.

2) CCP has only promised that the winner will be added, they haven't stated that ONLY the winner will be added. If CCP sees a design they like but it doesn't win, nothing is stopping them from making an offer to the artist and adding it to the game as well.

They don't have to offer anything read the forms when you enter the contest. They can use your design to make new ships if you submit without asking/telling you

No they can't. The relevant part of the rules:

Quote:
#

Entrant of the first place prize winning Work acknowledges, agrees, and understands that their Work will be fully integrated into EVE Online and grants to Sponsors a perpetual exclusive license (under copyright or otherwise) to use, adapt, or modify the Work for inclusion in the game EVE Online;
#

the Sponsors may otherwise use prize winning Works in such manner and upon such terms and conditions as the relevant entrant may approve in writing (such approval not to be unreasonably withheld, delayed or conditioned); and

In plain english:

If you win first prize, CCP has the right to add your ship to EVE. Since getting this done is the goal of the contest, this is just making it legally explicit.

If you win another prize, CCP can make an agreement with you to use your ship in some way, but you can't make unreasonable demands or refuse a reasonable offer. IOW, if CCP likes the second place entry and wants to use it, the second place winner could reasonably ask for $1,000 to give them the same compensation as the first place winner (since CCP gets the same benefit), but they CAN'T demand $1 million for use of their ship.

All of the other rights you forfeit by entering but not winning only cover display of the entry itself. IOW, CCP can use your submitted image in a magazine article about the contest, but they can't steal the design contained in that image.

Not that CCP would be stupid enough to use a design without compensation anyway. It's much cheaper to offer a non-winner $1-2000 for the rights to use their ship design than to suffer the inevitable PR disaster of "CCP STOLE MY SHIP DESIGN" all over every gaming forum and news site.

I wonder if this competition means that CCP don't have the time or manpower to design new content because they are busy fixing all of the half-finished/abandoned content already ingame.

Lets hope so.

Hardly. It's not like CCP (or any other sane business) would be using their artists to work on fixing lag problems or broken features. I guess you could hope that they might be too busy working on re-designing the Moa and Dominix, but this contest has absolutely nothing to do with any of EVE's biggest problems or any solutions to them.

Glancing over all the new submitted works i am actually more confident about the whole deal. 75 % arn't in the required format of all 6 views and non-color/lineart. Next to that alot look similar to what's already in the game (like the orca, seen a few variants come by) I also lolled quite very hard at the guy putting up someone else's hard work as his own in 3 seperate stages. Plagiarism much?

Anyways, i need to get started on how to sketch 1st before putting up final lines because it always goes south on that point with me. got like 7 different designs in my head but getting them on paper is the hard pressed issue right now Rolling Eyes

While there is a lot of submissions that are terrible or not done properly, the contest has only been running for 1 day, and there's more than a month before the deadline. Expect to see a lot more quality submissions as the contest progresses Cool

Do it mate Very Happy

There's part of me that would love to see an eve player win this rather than some random from DA that doesn't know squat about EVE. Gank them, spam the threads, do whatever it takes.

It's one of these odd things when designing a star ship that I keep thinking about the physics, a spherical ship built around a huge gyroscope would make sense on so many levels, especially for an armour tank. No flat surfaces would help deflect projectiles as well as spread the area a laser would affect.

Problem is that I drew a spherical ship then gave it an elongated tail to put the engines n stuff, unfortunately no amount of fancy texturing will hide the fact that it looks like a giant rocket powered sperm cell.

It's too bad half the prizes are DeviantART crap (premium accounts, points, t-shirt, backpack...). From my experience, most of the people on DeviantART are pretentious ******* megadouchebags, so if/when I do win this I'll have to make a public presentation of me throwing all that crap in the garbage.

But mmmm, cash, graphics card, iPad and pen tablet...

I like how there are already ships based on radial instead of bilateral symmetry up on the site. I would love to see ships that actually look like spaceships and aren't convinced for some reason that one way is "down".

So what is currently in space now is solely based upon radial symmetry?

We typically dont have douches in DA becuase of the social mechanics involved. Those who are very aggressive antisocial typically dont get popular even if theyre an 'awsome' artist. Some have even gotten banned in the past when they decided they're superior enough to bother the DA mod teams.

Battleship, Cruiser, Corvette, Strategic battleship, Command Ship for Gallente.

Cruiser HAC BS Siege Battlecruiser Frigate. For Caldari

I'm having a hard time deciding.

I'm loving my new concept ideas. (Corvette Strategic Battleship and Siege Battlecruiser)But at the same time Gallente need a commandship they can be proud of. And the Caldari need a Cruiser with a bit more in looks. Hard choices especially since i'm assuming only one entry can be submitted.

I am a bit surprised that CCP teamed up with Deviant Art. CGS or Game Artisans usually would host something like this. Maybe the Deviant Art guys are trying to raise the bar? Anyway, hopefully they get rid of the riff-raff plagiarizers (really dude, everyone who isn't a teenage girl into vampire art knows this is not your design) that seem to consist of 95% of the wip so far.

That kind of crap only passes at Deviant Art. Seems like a cool contest too. I was hoping Nova Fox would do orthos on one of his designs. Cool

I should just stop looking. Everything I see there makes me want to throw kittens out the airlock. And then drop them onto the happy kitten villages as orbital missiles.

As other people said, the good stuff won't show up for a while. So I'm going to just ignore the contest until near the end, since I won't be submitting.
