I think this contest is a great idea. Unfortunately, whatever ship is created will probably just be the 'free' ship they give us each year. If they truly wanted to make a new Eve ship they'd have asked for one from each race and defined a class size (like cruiser).

It could also be a specific ship, like the Orca or Roq. But since its all just design, not design and Stats, my guess is that it'll be a generic ship.

All that said, I'd be happy with the Hello Kitty Kestrel

Laughing This is proof on how ungreatful we can be and that no matter what CCP does it will never be good enough.

No one in Deviant art this evening has been able to answer my question and i don't seem to be getting anywhere with a petition on the subject

Can anyone confirm that hand drawings+photo's submitted in one of those formats are acceptable? Do they HAVE to be rendered through a program that's been suggested. And if so how the hell do you get it to save to jpg...

I would much prefer to be able to take an afternoon or two and draw these suckers rather than have to go through the process (especially when i dont know the programs) of rendering this son of a *****.

I'm assuming you HAVE to create the model in one of the programs they mentioned, and then render it to one of the accepted file types.

Here's one of two of my attempts O.R.E Gas Harvester . I think I'm starting to get the hang of it. my third attempt is going to look way, way, way better. My theme has been obviously a gas harvesting ship about cruiser size.

This is actually a really cool marketing ploy, CCP. Kudos to whoever thought of it. Based on the 700 or so comments on the announcement thread, you've got a sizable community of artists excited about this contest.

If you're still looking for an effects artist, maybe you should make a note on the contest page that you're hiring.

There are some really talented people on dA whom I'd love to see enter this thing. Alas, most of it seems to be five year olds, trolls, fan-art from other sci-fi, and like two or three who actually did try to make something that fits and have some talent.

As it stands at this moment, there's an amarrian cruiser design that's not bad, a gallente interceptor design that's brilliant (but someone posted it might be plagiarized from some other source), and then lots of sheer and utter crap. Hopefully it gets better as word gets out.

What programs that who suggested? Link please.

I've read through the rules and most of the comments but haven't seen any mention of specific programs, closest I can find is these quotes from the Associate Creative Director of deviantART who posted in response to comments:

As for the 3D models. It's not necessary to know anything about 3D modeling to participate in this contest. Just as long as you can draw 6 views of a ship and label it saying how long it is, that's all that's required. :)

....It means rendering in the sense not that it's a 3D model, but that it was rendered (drawn) digitally. You can draw some line art on paper, scan it in (or photograph it) and edit it in the image editing program of your choice, and that's totally fine.

....Heh, we wrote the rules. You're definitely ok submitting something that's not a 3D render.

"Rendering" is a technical term which means "colouring in" and was used by traditional artists long before it was adopted by 3D programs. I think as long as you follow the requirements of the rules in terms of presenting the finished design, it probably doesn't matter how you produce it.

And yes, I'm entering Cool

I'm not so sure- if the winning entry is battleship sized, would you give that out as a "generic"?

My guess is that CCP's artists already have a load of concepts to fill in the other races once the winner is chosen.

quote from official rules: "Entrant of the first place prize winning Work acknowledges, agrees, and understands that their Work will be fully integrated into EVE Online and grants to Sponsors a perpetual exclusive license (under copyright or otherwise) to use, adapt, or modify the Work for inclusion in the game EVE Online;"

they are asking for concept. whatever ships is chosen will be "EVEified" by CCP before implemented into game. considering some current ship desings are in dire need of facelift, i'd say anything goes. this is the epic chance of "righting the wrongs" :)

in which case why ask for measurements?
As long as all drawings are to scale, measurements wouldn't be needed.

We have at least one advantage: We know the game. We know how each race looks acts and operates. We know their ship designs and we know how they'd design a NEW ship approximately. This will be a pretty large factor in judging: IS it a Caldari, Gallente, Amaar, Ducttape ship?

I hope most of the designs won't be for stuff like BS-scale carriers. This is our chance to stick something really interesting into Eve. I want a battleship with a spinal-mount mini doomsday cannon!

I have 10 prototypes i'm considering 5 caldari 5 Gallente

Battleship, Cruiser, Corvette, Strategic battleship, Command Ship for Gallente.

Cruiser HAC BS Siege Battlecruiser Frigate. For Caldari

And yes i know i've added 3 classes of ships NOT in game. I dont care.

Once i have a clarification on the rules i'll know what i can consider further. Hope i get it quick.

I think Konoch has it bang on. We have some great artists within the community. We know the material inside and out and we know how things should look to fit within the game.

I do have some reservations though. The shortlisting of the last 15 will be done entirely by the deviantart crew and not by ccp. In that regard how relevant any game knowledge will be is questionable.

One thing though if it's somebody who isn't an eve player who wins I hope to god he/she brings something really special to the table as the rest of us players will be utterly gutted :).

CCP i have to believe wouldn't allow THAT if they didn't trust that deviant art knew the game. This is a huge deal for Deviant art and no one wants this to be screwed up.

Well in all honesty we have no clue wether the ship is actually going to be featured as any playable race's ship. It just might be an excentric ship like the Apotheosis or perhaps the Primae. A one off release as a gift is the most likely prospect of this contest. I'm also already half way of giving up after seeing some of the renders on DA. All i can use is pencil and paper and ofcourse it's hard to get the same amount of depth detail and perspective as it is with 3ds max or whatever.
