(I searched and read the proposed ideas thread for a good while and didnt see anything like this. if I'm wrong, ehhh....)Confused

I do a lot of audio creation/editing IRL and this idea is borrowed from the leading digital audio workstations, or DAWs (Digidesign's Pro Tools, Apple's Logic, Steinberg's Cubase, etc).....

UI PRESETS

Basically the idea is that you can hide, show, size and position individual UI elements anywhere on the screen you want, AND SAVE THE WINDOW CONFIGURATION TO A HOTKEY. Pressing the hotkey instantly recalls the UI configuration assigned to it.

For instance, you could have settings for:

HI SEC TRAVEL - to admire the view I have all windows minimized (except the 'selected item' pane, transparency turned way down ofc, just in case I am targeted by a would-be aggressor). Hmmmm and brackets are switched off as well. UI Preset saved to hotkey NUMPAD1. Oh yeah, I have a copy of this preset with the addition of my chat windows so's i can chats........ UI Preset saved to hotkey NUMPAD2

MINING - This one has my overview open (set to the mining preset), P&P, drone control window, cargo bay, chat windows, and the browser open to grismar's full ore chart. UI Preset saved to hotkey NUMPAD3

PROBING - Automatically switches to system map, scanner window is open and all windows are moved to the outside edges of the screen and scaled down. UI Preset saved to hotkey NUMPAD4

TRADING - Im usually in station trading so for this one I have my wallet open to the 'orders' tab with the market window open right next to it. The calculator is open, the corporation 'deliveries' bay is open as well as the 'blueprints', 'modules & munitions', 'ships', and 'other' chat windows across the top of the screen. Browser is open (but minimized) to eve-central. UI Preset saved to hotkey NUMPAD5

PLANETARY INTERACTION - 'Science and Industry' window open to the 'planets' tab, the view is already in planet mode and centered on my first planet's colony regardless of Command Center placement, jukebox is open and playing 'Red Glowing Dust' because i like that song when playing with my worlds. UI Preset saved to hotkey NUMPAD6

RESEARCH / PRODUCTION - 'Science and Industry' window open to the 'jobs' tab, corp hangar open to a specific tab, 3 labs open on one side of the screen and 2 assembly arrays open on the other side, all open to their respective tabs. UI Preset saved to hotkey NUMPAD7

and most important.....
PVP - ALL EFFECTS OFF, overview to 'PVP' preset, zoom backed out a bit, drone control window open, sound disabled, etc, etc, you get the idea (Im getting lazy now). UI Preset saved to hotkey NUMPAD8

These presets operate in either 'locked' or 'unlocked' modes. When locked, changes to a preset wont be saved when switching to another preset, whereas in unlocked mode if you make adjustments to a preset they will remain when switching between presets.

so ya theres my idea. Very Happy please criticize and augment or mutate or whatever, most importantly, BUMP THIS THREAD PLEASE. It really helps my workflow in the music programs, I imagine it would do the same for my EVE playing.

lets see here... hmm...

overview tabs already in place.

you can write your own macros, and run them. to do exactly what you just said. yea, it takes a bit more work, but hey whatever floats your boat.

note: i already do something similar with my g15. so, yea.

I like this idea. As for Saithe....you are obvioulsy WAy more computer savy then I am. "Write my own macro" ??????? I can barely write my name and I'm 44 in rl.

Just give me a button to click and make it all better please. I'm all for that.

there will be no button to click. you have to configure the macros yourself. even if ccp were to give you the ability to store them client-side, you still have to tell the slot what to do.

you dont buy a car and say ENGAGE, do you? no, you buy the car, you put fuel in it, you step on the accelerator to go forward, brake to stop, and so on. all of which, is a macro in your brain. you didnt just press a button and magically gain the car driving macro. you had to tell the slot how to drive.

I said nothing about macros.

My idea is for an instant UI change, not "press NUMPAD1 and ooo! watch my mouse re-arrange my windows where i want them! look ma, no hands!"

instead, think "oh crappers, i am being targeted and i am 12k from the gate....." press NUMPAD8 and instantly- "ok, bring it"

again, no macros. UI PRESETS.

Macro player wet dream what?

Instead of having to arrange all their windows -just so-, before they run their illegal macro programs that mine for them...

They can just press #3, and it'll do it for them.

Jeenius!

How about less "the game plays itself" options?

i think you are missing my point.

sure, you could look at it that way, but i find that im constantly re-arranging my windows in eve, almost every time i change activities.
am i alone in this? do you guys really just arrange your windows once and not move them? Shocked
you use the same configuration whether probing or trading? as far as i know neither of those activities (i wont even mention pvp) are very "macro-able".

You're welcome! =)

As for my window arrangement, I try to maximize visual real estate. So all my windows are pinned in different locations around the edge of the monitor.

If I'm dealing with Market stuff, I will make sure I'm not in the middle of combat or something. So how I view my Market and my Probes at the same time is irrelevant. And if you're the kind of player who likes to shop while scanning, I'm sure you'll figure out an arrangement.

If I am in the middle of multitasking, that's what the minimize function is for. Expand and/or collapse whatever you want to work on, and not what you're not.

Perhaps you should prioritize your activities, instead of trying to open every single window possible at all times, and then complain about the lack of space and organization. Very Happy

wow.
so having groups of expands/collapses assigned to one button would be cheating to you? i didnt realize window dragging was such an integral part of eve.

Huh???

Macros can already get this in a few milliseconds; I would seriously doubt any serious macroer would change their already working macros; especially to use a new EVE UI feature with all the risks that entails. It is the ability for non-macros to get their windows set up quickly that was the appeal for me.

You could even make the hotkeys not work if you have an aggression timer, if you want to make sure that the lazy or incompetent are not disadvantaged in combat.

Some people think online games should be about time sinks of mindless clicking ( FarmVille, EVE PI extractors, EVE Empire WT0 travel, etc). Myself and others think the no-skill things should be done conveniently so I can get back to focusing on the game. Hell, I'd be happy if the damn infoboxes would quit floating around on the screen. At least a hot key would allow me to reset them.

2003 User Interfaces were fine for 2003; users' expectations have grown since then.

Seems kewl to me. I understand where some people are coming from though about macros and what not. But overall, a UI Preset would be nice. Though i rarely move my windows at all on the screen, it would be something new to mess with, till i get my one window has everything set up, Laughing.

I like the preset idea it's kind of like a template similar to saving your fitting but for windows. It would also be great if you could save your presets and export them like a bookmark which you can pass to someone in game.

Also you could then access the preset via right clicking, just like a BM you select the UI layout or assign a hotkey to it.

I had this idea too. Its similar to the concept of "Workspaces" in graphic and design software.

A preset/workspace should be combined with the overview setting selection as well. Other settings can be tossed in too but there would need to be an indicator to show which ones are linked and which are global. Wink
