...How does it feel to be working on the cutting edge of computer wizardry?

Well, I left my last job when I woke up in the morning one day and the job didn't make me want get up and do it anymore. These days I have moved my family to Iceland, wake up early and can't wait to get in to the office. That might be a bit cheesy but it is an amazing experience working with the incredibly talented developers we have who actualy make these things.

But I'm not completely convinced though, could you make a video of those two women wrestling in their dresses?

Interesting idea, I'll pass it on to our creative guys. They are always going on about novel types of wrestling.

...How well will the Apex stuff work for us that prefer ATI hardware since Nvidia refuses to do the physics stuff on a dedicated Nvidia card unless the game is rendered by Nvidia as well?

The APEX / PhysX enabled technology will simply run on the CPU if you are using an ATI card rather than on the GPU if you were using an NVIDIA card. Using an ATI card won't lock you out of using the tech.

How will it be performance wise if used on a CPU? Also will it scale up on multiple cores if available?

Actualy, the technology shown in the video was the state of play back in March when it was created for our joint talk with NVIDIA at GDC. The tech being shown is the physicaly simulated cloth using their APEX framework. Things have come on quite some way since then although I should point out that the assets being used are game agnostic Carbon assets which let us show off the tech. The tech is being developed and will be available for our games to use.

Will CTG continue developing hardware agnostic solutions, too? The rumor mills get hot whenever CCP and nVidia are mentioned together (and particularly when those annoying nVidia spots come up incessantly during EVE TV).

My personal opinion is that PhysX is not a route that the company should go down, among other seedy rumors about proprietary technology such as CUDA.

Has PhysX even been updated to a non-ancient instruction set yet?

I've been reading about DirectX 11 lately, and while my main 3 monitor system is a pc, I've been playing eve increasingly on my i7 macbook pro. Since DX11 won't be making its way to the mac any time soon, has CCP been working towards a more universal approach, like OpenGL 4.2?

I can't wait for tessellation, motion blur, focal blur, and soft shadows to hit EVE. Very HappyVery HappyVery Happy

Speaking of graphics, can you guys comment on the much-cherished old cyno effect (featured in the Empyrean Age trailer)? ...

The Core Graphics guys produce the graphics technology, the EVE Developers use that to create the actual visuals so I can't say right now. Let me go ask some people across the office and get back to you.

All of the ingame effects are scheduled for an overhaul but the release date of that is not nailed down yet. Engineers are building the technical infrastructure but once that is done, artists need to spend considerable time crafting the new effects, so that they are in line with the high quality standard our art team sets for itself.

We are actually looking to recruit visual effects and technical artists to assist with the effects overhaul, so if you've got the skillz and are willing to relocate to Reykjavik, let us know:

Visual effects artist

Visual effects technical artist

Seriously, if you are that artist and have the skills and love EVE and want to make it more awesome, check it out.

CCP, First off, thank you again for the wonderful glimpse into your work.

Secondly, CCP, sirs, madams, I am shocked and appalled at this egregious misallocation of what seem to be extremely valuable resources. I don't want to wake up in an eve where leaving my pod only shows me a bland, dreary interior with a bunch of womens hair fluttering around.

Where is the cleavage???? I want boobies, large beautiful shapely breasts. LOTS OF THEM! I do not believe that you time has been spent wisely, I henceforth call for immediate action in reallocating all your manpower in the following manner,

1. Bouncing Boobies.
2. Everything else.

I can see that there is still hope for the CTG team, even this late in the game, you have a lot of ground to make up though. Please for the sake of all of EVE, RIGHT THIS WRONG! It will require many sleepless nights of research, development, testing, more research, more testing. But I know, that if the CTG team can pull together and get this right, you will have a MUCH happier player base.

Balls in your court CTG team. GET THIS ( . Y . ) RIGHT!

Thankyou for the response! I kind of figured it'd be a "yes, but we can't tell you when," but it's good to know that I can continue to hope.

A word of advice, if I may - the cyno effect was one of the best effects not just because it looked good but because even if you were used to 0.0 seeing it (especially a dozen of them) still manages to cause one's adrenaline to spike, and we were all very saddened when it went away. If you can only redo one old effect this year, or ever, make it the cyno effect.

when incarna is released,

flat chests will be a client-side optimization to reduce graphics lag in high traffic stations such as jita and rens. The vast number of Bouncy boobies would be seen by those who possess only the best of visual computing technologies, as their cases would get too hot to simulate such bouncy radiance.

That, right there, is kinda what we've been waiting to hear, really. It's good that you've finally posted it. You guys are bent on posting details about the teams and what you're doing, and that's great, but really all we need are reassurances that you're not abandoning this "7-year old game" (which you've given the impression that you're doing).

So, yeah, it's an old game, and most other MMO devs out there do abandon old games in favor of making new, and the lack of progress with fixing lag, combined with you ignoring player requests to fix the things we want faster gave the impression that CCP is abandoning this game.

Your "Vision" of growing a flock of games is pretty cool.

About that video, are you implying dynamic hair and cloth collision rendering in real time? I've messed about with 3d animation and was fairly convinced such a real time render was beyond present hardware.

I was deeply involved inSL during its early/middle years, plus fiddled with There, Uru (including some Age Writing), OpenSim, ActiveWorlds and more (haven't seen Unity3D yet). And I only have one thing to say about that video:

Surprised Shocked Congratulations, you *have* built the better mousetrap!

Now, just need to see a better pitch for Incarna, and I'll happily shut up about that. My primary concern is that you get caught too far into that 'user created content' trap. It's possible to share the build with the players, but should be done carefully.

We are NOT abandoning EVE. NOT NOT NOT. The great thing about Carbon is that all of our games benefit from one another by using shared technology. As you have quoted, this means that EVE will get the cool things that are made for others games just as those other games will benefit from continued development on EVE.
