FPS games have been a part of my life for a LOT of years. I've never "loved" them, but they've been a consistent, mostly brainless activity that i've enjoyed.

However, I find myself these days more frustrated than entertained.

Things that CONSTANTLY happen that irritate me:

1) PEOPLE NOT DYING WHEN YOU SHOOT THEM!!!!!

Many games have indicators showing when you score a hit on someone. Sure, sometimes you are hitting armor, or non-fatal wounds... but what the ****!? I've sat there firing controlled bursts or single shots into head/neck/chest, with verified hit feedback on every single shot, emptying an entire clip into someone and they STILL proceed to run up and shoot or stab me dead.

Other incidents include perfect head shots, or verified hits in situations where the only part exposed IS the head. Yet, they're alive still. Sometimes you even see blood splatter from the head!

2) MAGIC HOMING BULLETS THAT FOLLOW YOU AROUND CORNERS

Constantly I am in safe cover, with zero line of sight or possible bullet penetration (in games where that exists), and somehow someone in a room, around a corner , scores a fatal hit against me despite having no LOS. Screenshots, replays, etc depending on the game verified no line between me and my killer.

The usual/obvious things to point fingers at for both of these things are latency/network/lag related issues and you can never manage these down to "perfection", you can only reduce the issues. However, with a near perfect connection, this shouldn't be happening CONSTANTLY (as in... every other death).

3) NON ACCURATE ANIMATIONS

So often in an FPS game, you are forced to make split second decisions. Do you shoot the guy on the left or the right?
Then you notice that the guy on the right is aiming at the guys beside you, so you take out the guy on the left first. But, before you can pull of your shot on the left guy.. you realize the guy on the right was aiming at you and on his screen probably had the crosshairs on you the entire time, and that the crappy game did a bad job of updating the player model's stance to reflect this, leading to your rapid demise.

4) TINY UNINTERESTING SHOEBOX-SIZED MAPS(*new*)
Seriously. It is 2010. Not 1990. What is with all these tiny maps?
Sure, there's something to be said about a well-designed small map, designed for fast paced gameplay and all that. But the bulk of them? There is nothing fun about running around in some square box where you are close enough at all times to your enemies to hit them cleanly with a pistol, if it weren't for the thoughtless random obstacles scattered around to "fill" the room.
Modern Warfare 2, which I really have no respect for, but I'll use it as an example here... well, is a great example of this. People are using sniper rifles and things at ranges where pistols would do the trick. Where's my giant forests and cities? So many of these things are so poorly designed, that an enemy can respawn and kill you before you finish reloading from killing them!
There is nothing fun about running around in a tiny box, dodging explosions. Give us giant cool maps where we can actually decide on what tactics we want to use, rather than forcing everyone to be some sort of crazed rambo, ready for close range engagement at all times.

Also,
If you can close your eyes and throw a grenade in a certain direction from your spawn, and have a chance at hitting an enemy near their spawn... your map sucks.

I hope the future of multiplayer gaming is a little less screwed up.

can i have y.... wait.

Your not quitting, are you? Besides, FPS rarely have good stuff :\

Im a big fan of hating the first one as well. I disagree with the magical armor of quake-esque games, (running around picking up armor is bad in an fps imo), because the whole point is that its a level playing field.. Sure, it can be a tactic for both sides to run around collecting armor, but i think its just lame.

Oh, and magic bullets are usually not too much of an issue, but then again, i could see where you are coming from.

My problem is something along the lines of bullets not coming from the gun. In mw(and most other shooters) bullets come from the head, where the camera is. This is great... for aiming.. but not so great for real-ness factor. I dont see how someone can hide behind a wall with only half their head sticking out and still be able to shoot people.

Honestly, there are other brainless activities that could include other people, but really if i want something brainless i try to avoid other people without brains. It could end badly.
So basically what im saying is forget online fps, its just a waste of time.

To add some more hates:

BUNNY HOPPING/ON THE SPOT DITHERING:

Yup the guy who jumps everywhere. This also covers that thing where you constantly strafe left/right in rapid succession, so their client interpolates your position incorrectly (most FPS predict a characters position based on last received position and direction of motion). Wish you could turn off such interpolation and just see where they were last reported as at.

Often a pita to hit, whereas on a real battlefield jumping up and down in no-mans land is probably not a great carrer advancing move.

PEASHOOTER PROS:

The guy who can pull 7 successive headshots with the basic starter weapon, while you are dithering/bunnyhopping/insanely laggy etc. Somehow he isn't any good with the other weapons, and you can kill him in a "fair" fight, but every pistol fight he pwns you.

BFF SNIPER:

Yup its your new best friend. Something you said/didn't say/did/didn't do tic'ed this guy off and now, given a room full of targets will shoot at you regardless of the situation around him. Seriously, it is like a berserker rage with the guy. He will see you and charge you down like a horny bull on viagra.

your fault for playing ****ty FPS games.

Stick to id software games. tbh, i recommend you roll back to one of the Quakes, Quake II even, it's sure to have some servers still run by loyal fans.

CS 1.6, too.

but dread not my tender FPS flower, RAGE is coming soon (3rd QRTR 2011), and so is DOOM IV.

To put it short, lag.

People dance back and forth as snipers to if hit only be graced by the bullet and as for you being hit behind the corner I'd say you only think you were behind the corner when shot or the shot went through the structure somehow, it happens you know.

My main gripe is that certain actions in these games take no time at all, whereas they'd be nearly impossible to do for real. Like driving a jeep and then swinging back on the 50. cal and shooting on the fly within seconds...

The 3 main points you listed (which is the only thing I bothered to read) deal with lag specifically (main issues with FPS if not every other game on the market Rolling Eyes). Either client side or server side. Either of which I'm not sure, it doesn't really matter. Either way, you'll have to learn Bullet Compensation Tactics to 5 or else die at every other noob with an MP-40 machine gun and a hard line connection.

I love FPS games. The 'lag lead' (original lead estimate + estimated lag) is all apart of the 'challenge'. Hunt or be hunted. Camp or die. **** I don't care, I'll still grenade your ass. noob, l2<3lag

3) people not playing as a team in team-based games.

4) people playing as a team in a death-match game.

5) people on my team running in front of me, just before the boom-headshot on that nasty sniper who's picked a near-perfect camping spot in a map-glitch I never knew existed.

6) people who claim my frags, after I've spent ammo reducing someone to near-death for the last 15 seconds.

7) teams full of snipers. no matter how unbalanced it is, they don't give a damn and expect everyone else to protect their dumbness.

8) n00bs. (not newbies, but actual n00bs)

9) smacking talking 10 year old's with empty heads, no guts and a keyboard full of profanities everytime they either get a lucky shot or get torn apart by anyone else and call them a hacker...and their caps lock key is stuck because they n00b so much they hit the wrong key for duck or crawl.

10) Map elitists. people who claim the map you are playing on is for n00bs and not a 'pr0' map, like the one they have been playing on for the last 5 years...

11) people who say 'afk' and stay in your team...can anyone create a rule that if someone types 'afk' it just logs them off the server?

12) vendetta players. I killed you fair and square, deal with it and go help your team...they need you focused and not running around on private missions looking for me.

I consider myself a Vendetta Player ... Yes, in TF2 when a guy annoys me enough, I usually switch to Spy, hide and proceed to slowly creep in their base/spot and backstab him in an act of sheer nerdrage. After that I will proceed to do it about 3 or 4 more times (on which I die times by fixe of that) and when they realize I'm actively hunting them out of pure emo/wrist nerdrage of noobalongness insanity and they get MAD at me and begin doing the same to me I stop, feeling warm and fuzzy inside.

It's a perverse pleasure of mine, because in a game, when you annoy someone, is like when on EVE ebil pierates om nom nom carebear tears to fuel their minmatard ships.

Yes, also seeing you post this made me a bit more happy, and only encourages me to backstab you more.

in ET nothing I loved more than killing the guy as Covert, putting on his pants (lulz) destroying the nekkid body and then proceeding to kill him again to steal their pants ad nauseam.

in BF2, I went C4 buggy/humvee/chopper into them, and /or nothing like dropping a kamikaze Blackhawk into them over and over or running them by with a buggy and making the horn sound the Cucaracha as I drove over their dead bodies in psychonerdrage in a circle of insanely idiotic behaviour until someone blew up the running in circles car.

... Ahhh yes, I'm one of the guys you hate.

But I must admit, I only do it to people I Know for sure that when they kill me they LAUGH ... I see them, in their little pixelated faces they were trying to kill me on purpose to make fun on of me!!! I KNOW IT!.

Best memory ever was me driving a chopper full of C4 and a whole squad into one guy I KNEW had it in for me, and the tk''s tally almost permabanned me from the server I loved to troll. <sheds a tear> Such sweet memories.

I love ****ing people off in MW:2...usually me + riot shield, or a good camping spot is enough to annoy an entire team in domination Laughing

I personally just get ****ed about hackers, which of course MW:2 is full of them, I usually target people that I'm pretty sure are hacking and annoy the **** out of them if I can.

I often wonder that myself. I think it has something to do with the instant gratification generation that came after mine. The people my age have proven to be lazy parents and are not teaching their kids jack **** about what's "right", or the value of "hard work".

I'd probably bust my kid across the face if I caught him cheating at anything...but then again I don't have kids (and won't).

This!

Riot shield, dual shotguns (The ones that spin around and thus insta reload), throwing knife. Play the scrapyard map, the one with planes in the middle, go sit in the plane that has a crate in it. Own the **** out of people with your throwing knife and shotguns, nothing except a lucky grenade can touch you (You can just walk into the other section if a grenade drops in the one you're in).

Camping is only for the really **** maps that's been done to death or if you have horrible ping.

Vendetta people just make me wonder how fragile someones ego really is. If you happen to come across them fine but going after them all over the map till you get your one kill...

The problem is that even if your ISP is the best in the world, and your ping to the server is *1* ms, it still happens.

I know it's lag related or whatever, (not the ****ty damage modeling though..)
But as internet gaming exists now, these problems will continue to exist I think without smarter net code and better advancements in the physical networking itself.

Regardless of the why, it drives me BONKERS. I hate it soooo so much, I want to be smiling while i play games, not swearing. I really like turn based games a lot for these reasons... I wish they were more popular :)

No, these problems exist across the board, in all shooters.

Quakes, etc are not the answer for me.. even with or without the problems mentioned, they're just frag fests. They don't really interest me. Counterstrike... a little more interesting but all the same BS, with the added fun benefit of watching other people play for 10 minutes when you die.

I like bigger, more open games, not tiny shoebox maps. (Going to edit my first post with a comment about maps I forgot ;) ). The lesser of evils are things like the battlefield games (Bad Company 2 if I had to pick a newer consoleish thing), and that MAG game on PS3. They have problems too, including the above and more.

I personally find online multiplayer FPS games to frustrating to be fun for all the reasons listed here and a few more, lag and cheating isn't quite as bad on X-Box live but then you have to put up with 14 year old brats so I just avoid playing MP altogether.

Playing a few games at home with a few friends is fun though.

FPS bashing huh? Such an easy target, let me get a few kicks in. How about these genre staples, aspects of FPS games that need to die. Worst offenders in brackets.

1: Exploding Barrels (Half Life 2)
2: Vehicle sections (Halo/CoD:MW2)
3: Gun Emplacements that spawn waves of bad guys (Gears)
4: Pre-fixed damage models, When an enemy dies when hit by the exact same amount of predetermined lead. (Half-Life 2)
5: Re-spawning bad guys (CoD4)
6: Moral bankruptcy (CoD:MW2)
7: **** poor map design (multiplayer = CoD:MW2, Singleplayer = Halo)
8: Puzzles and worst of all repetition of the same puzzle. (Half Life 2)
9: Being attacked by helicopters, its the new train level.

i however, despite having experienced a fair few of the things in this thread people hate, do enjoy cod and halo.
ofc mw2 can give me aids some of the time,(eg oma noob tubes, painkiller) but on the whole i have good fun.

i find that wearing a headset gives a wicked advantage btw, if you havnt been using one, get involved.

also, i play these on the 360, does that make a big difference to the experience vs pc?

Yeah please would be great. Its one of my major beefs with FPS's HL2 was the worst as whole sections of the game had you running around areas overly populated with exploding barrels.

You know something is wrong when you are always shooting barrels instead of the enemy.

Honestly, if people were disabled after being hit multiple times instead of randomly surviving when they shouldn't, and the dying when your enemy's LOS would have to be a V shape in order to hit you went away, I'd enjoy some of that stuff more.

There's nothing worse than being a better and faster player and getting screwed over by poor programming. Why even bother to show us an X/hit marker if they're not going to die when we hit them? It's SOO ******ed. In non-armor games, you shouldn't be able to count 9 hit markers on a single target and them still be able to run around and kill you. It's bad game design. Players are forced to commit all their short-term resources to take down a single person, and that isn't how it should work at all.
