I've been trying to get 7-9 clients running at once. After opening the 3rd or 4th client, Wine gives me a "Too many open files, ulimit -n probably needs to be increased". I've increased this generously with no success. I only see the Tyrannis splash banner thing for a bit, then I'm left with the blue Wine virtual desktop background.

I'm thinking about giving up and trying to use multiple xservers for each client. But I'd have to figure out how all that stuff works, which I'd rather not do. :/ Also, it wouldn't be nearly as slick and easy to use than switching between workspaces with Compiz! :)

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 with Wine 1.2rc6 and a 9800 GTX+ with Nvidia driver 195.36.24. I don't think there is an issue with the video though, when the client actually starts the game looks flawless.

Does anyone have more than 2 clients working or know of any possible fixes?

Any ideas appreciated. :)

That did the trick!! Thanks so much!

It's kinda weird with that many running, each client seems virtually lag free and functions very well. Though switching between them with Compiz and web browsing on other workspaces is quite laggy, even with Compiz disabled. But it is usable and gets the job done.

What was it like for you? What hardware you running? I wonder if some more powerful hardware would improve it. Probably not though. I might try multiple xservers eventually and see what that is like.

Gentoo Very Happy Kde4 with KWin effects disabled.
Nvidia drivers 256.35.
( With 195 driver series i had visual lags, before 256 i used 190.53 )
HW : Phenom2-X4-955 , 8gb ram, GeForce GTX 260, nvidia chipset.

I think that more powerful Proc will help, case :
On one window of 5 i had 20 fps. I minimized "in-eve" windows (items, ships, chat, station panel) and got 40 fps. So, 3D rendering of ship was the same, but FPS moved up.

Excellent find Wadlax! There will be a number of Wine players that will be happy to hear of this solution.

I don't use multiple clients, but i just wonder if wine already uses KSM which would save a big amount of RAM if you run multiple instances of the same software? Would be a nice advantage over windows i think.
