So since Steam has been confirmed to be released in native binary form for Linux, and considering EVE is currently offered for both PC and Mac users, will EVE for Linux be revived?

I really hope so. To be quite honest, the only reason I'm still on Windows on my gaming PC is because EVE isn't particularly friendly on Linux.

We currently don't have any plans to revive the Linux client for EVE Sad It would be nice to see it again but I think we may have to wait a while before we see it again. CCP is all about World Domination so don't rule it out!

Can we, instead of a Linux Client, Just have one guy check to see if it works on wine?

Didn't Valve said something about implementing a DirectX-to-OpenGL layer? 'Cause that's the only way to run Eve on Linux.
I don't use Steam, and didn't paid much attention to it, but I'm curious to know if those newly-released games for Mac on Steam are OpenGL or DX only...

yes because we should, yet again, attempt to recreate all the work the wine project has already done Rolling Eyes cedega sucking at it wasn't enough?

Given the state of ATI's linux drivers its more likely its a driver issue than anything wrong with wine/eve. Theres been rather epic amounts of *****ing from the wine dev's in the past couple years about the ugly hacks required to get stuff working on ATI. Just buy nvidia and save yourself the trouble (or wait for ATI's drivers to not suck)

You misunderstand, I wasn't bagging at wine. Wine is awesome, I love it and ATi suck. Sadly, I bought my card before swapping to linux, so no change for me for a while! :(

I agree with you on that one: Cedega (and wine too) are the worst ways to put Eve on Linux. But you have to see it from CCP's point of view: they can't afford to rewrite all that DX code into GL, plus all the other win32-only code - too much effort, investment, time, etc...
I wish I'd be wrong, and see a functional & native Eve on Linux, but I'm pretty pessimistic about it.Sad

Has Steam really been officially confirmed for Linux now? Last I heard (a couple months ago), it was just a strong rumor.

As for EVE not being friendly to Linux, I don't know what you're talking about. I don't really have any problems with the EVE client (well I do, but not Linux specific ones haha) anymore. It works better for me in Wine than the official Linux client ever did, anyway.

I think you completely missed my point. There is no reason for Valve to create a 'direct x to openGL layer' just like there was no need for cedega to try to sell support for what was really just a fork of wine that trailed well behind. wine already does this job and does it quite well considering the complexity of the task.

wine is a perfect way to play eve, i haven't had an issue that took more than 5 minutes to fix in years. I usually have 3 clients up, we use mumble for voice comms, as far as i'm concerned eve is linux compatible. As far as i can tell the only people that really have problems are those using intel or ATI cards because their linux drivers are terribad (although ATI is getting better) but thats not anyones fault but their own.

Sure theoretically a native client would run faster, but that wouldn't gain anything, even with 3 clients the one i'm using sits happily at 57fps (my refresh rate) unless in a large fleet fight, in which case the node is crashing and i'm staring at a black screen anyway. Its not like a few more fps is going to help me lock the ghost ships on my overview faster.

As long as CCP doesn't decide to use some whacked out code path out of no where that isn't implemented in wine i don't see any reason to push CCP for more than to just check if they broke something with wine and file a quick bug report with wine. The community can take it from there.

Leave CCP to fix what is destroying this game, LAG.
