Training 72 days for my MK V and then getting it stuck in the construction ring at the Crielere project site, holding up the queue of people wanting to fly through it.

Happy days.

belts full of mining thorax with a medium shield booster for a tank and if you were lucky and could afford it, a rack of miner IIs.

also there were so few players in '03 that when i started there was no one in my system, i was for a nearly a week, eventually managed to talk to somone who informed me of how to add stargates to my overiew and how to jump using them!!!! then i was free to explore new eden, my playground for the next 7 years.

oh also, back when newbs were REALLY newbs and noone knew anything about anything, it was so tough to get anything done. and the UI was... ugly. very very ugly.

Hm, when I started playing eve .... lets think.

- Maximum simultaneous players on the server was just before reaching 10k for the first time.

- Lowsec already needed you to be cautious when you travelled there. But it wasn't that populated as today. Was not that big problem to hunt rats or go mining there as a new player.

- No T2 ships existed. Shortly after I began interceptors were introduced as the first T2 ships hitting Eve. No battlecruisers, no mining barges, no destroyers. They all arrived well later. Mining in cruisers and BS was common back there.

- Wapt to 0 didn't exist. To warp to 0 to gates and stations rquired masses of bookmarks. That was the reason why warp to 0 was introduced - massive copying and use of bookmarks caused lag.

- Drone skills and drone bonuses of ships was different. Dominix, Vexor, Arbitrator had a bonus of using +1 drone per skill level, to a maximum of 15 drones. More than 5 drones was changed to damage/drone HP bonuses to become qual and reduce drones + lag later. The gallente dread was able to use up to 35 drones with maximum skills.

- Every type of missile could be used in any launcher (if it fitted in the launchers hold). So you was able to launch torpedos with a frig. And torpedos was the ultimate missile type, because size and speed of the target didn't matter for the damage.

There sure was much more different than today, but that was long ago. I do not remember all now without thinking over it.

I remember my first "epic" 0.0 fight 3-4? years ago in FAT between IAC and BoB

local climbed above jita for the first time in any fleet battle i belive, wich was around 600.. nedless to say that lag was horrible, the thing we got today is nothing compared to that Razz

in the end IAC lost that fight and folded irc, but bob got driven out shortly after.

Not such a great veteran myself but I have seen a few milestones since I started.

- There was no skill queue
- There was no 100% speed bonus until 1.6 million SP
- Tech III did not exist
- Wormholes did not exist
- P.I. was completely utopic, all planets were, was beautiful
- Jita Cam Razz
- The fall of BoB and Goonswarm

/ NINJA EDIT

- Deep Safe Spots could be created

@Dylatar: We must have started at pretty much the same time. I remember all that similar. Interceptors being introduced, 10k players ....

+ I remember getting my first cruiser with the help of my corp (battleships were the biggest thing you could get and BCs didn't exist)
+ Ofc I used that Thorax for mining ... in 0.0 ... without much hassle of PvP attacks or even PvE
+ You could just warp to a safespot when someone entered local and you were really pretty safe there, because no probes existed
+ FA fought m0o!

Good times!

Yeah I remember being in an empire wardec with some greifer corp way back when. Enemy corp has like 2 members. Was a joke really.

Anyhoo, we had a corp that could regularly field 5-10 ships on a moments notice. We were carebears but this time we had enough of this sort of stuff so we hunted the guy down when he was on.

One day we had him camped at a station. We had about 5-7 guys in cruisers and a couple battlecruisers. Nothing fancy but enough that we could take him down in a battleship should he decided to show his head.
So after he trash talks in local, he undocks, solo, in a NOS Domi.

All of us go at him, he NOS's several of us and takes me down and severely damages some others. He survives unscathed, our gang limps home. Fun times.

Background: These ships were pretty scary back in the days when NOS was not nerfed. It was a Dominix that used its drones as its only weapon, and had NOS in almost every high slot. Since NOS would consistently suck out something like 50 cap/sec (no I dont have numbers, just going from memory), and do this no matter how much cap the opposite player had, you could cap out pretty much any ship in no time. The combat rules for dealing with these ships back then was litterally: "do not engage them when under 20km". Or ... use another NOS domi.

A lot of stuff is being missed, such as:

1:Missiles did a lot of damage alright, irrespective of what they were hitting, but since torpedos only flew at 300 ms,it was pretty easy to outrun them in anything really.

2:Lock times and tracking speeds for the guns were quite high even for a battleship using turrets,so battleships were the ultimate pawn mobile.

3:multiple stacking of damage mods in low slots, and low and behold, the famous gankageddon was born.

4:stacking 2 MWD's in battleships to cover the 15 kms instantly between the point where the warp drive stopped and where the jump gate was located...This was of course well before warp to 0 ever existed, and a lot of aliance pilots had hundreds, even thousands of warp to 0 bookmarks saved for fast travel in their territory.

5:The first heavy tacklers were created by players, using a cruiser hull with dual MWD's and only having enough power and CPU left over for warp scramblers/webbers and small guns,as well as a decent tank,so they could hold the target long enough until backup arrived.

6:server crashes about 2~3 times a day, followed by reboots were common in 2003,and yulai was actually a major trade hub at the time.

7:out of system safe spots were possible by simply bookmarking the next system along the route you're flying, and once in that system, just fly to the bookmark, and you'd see the ship going in a random direction and exausting it's entire capacitor to get there....Furthest i ever flew was 650 AU from the starting gate in a battleship, and well beyond the range of any planet in that system or the ability to scan targets,so there wasn't even a need for cloaks at all.

8:There were on average, about 3000 people logged in during the week, and maybe a little over 4000 people on weekends,so organizing a decent sized fleet of 30~40 ships took days of preparation, and only a few of those were battleships at the time.

I'll think up some more.

Lol, sounds just like my first corp with my first (now biomassed) character. We fielded a fleet to go after someone wanting to ransom us, immediately were decimated by 2 BSes on a gate, I was the only one to survive, heavily into structure.

All you needed was a passive shield tanked ship with missiles,so NOS was pretty useless against that, since in that configuration, the cap use was almost non existant.

Things I have seen or were not present yet since shortly after Trinity, as far as I remember at least...

• Nano, nano, nano
• FOTM Falcons
• FW did not exist
• T3 was a glint in CCPs eye
• Suicide Ganking before the sec loss buff
• REAL pirates
• REAL mercs
• People actually cared what was said on these forums, wasn't 99% trolls and griefers
• Blasters were beastly
• Artillery was a joke
• The ORIGINAL Helios
• Ugly belt rocks
• No Orca
• The old cloak effect
• The old warp effect
• EVE had Sound FX... o.O
• No wormholes
• The original probing system
• Less than 50 titans in the game
• Seeing a titan was considered an exceptional stroke of luck
• Original BOB
• The LOFTY scam
• 30k online was huge
• The more remote empire systems rarely had visitors.
• SYNDICATE region was a ghost town, and Red Skull alliance roamed it like a horde of barbarians.
• Null sec Providence was still mostly vets and up and comers, not a butt ton of absolute noobs who fit civ blasters on their battleships.
• The OLD Providence ^
• Crazy griefing for the sake of griefing NOW compared to actual competition prior, sure around Trinity circa early '08 there was plenty of violence in every other system, but piracy was still a widespread and respected profession and a real competition, and low sec was just beginning to feel the squeeze of the bottom falling out on reward versus risk. Now it's mostly "ha i shottid you lulz i had 80 huntard in WOW, i win EVE nao!"
• No skill queue
• Poor new player experience
• No weapon grouping
• SOV was worth holding, and the only upkeep (indirect) was fueling your towers
• I never heard of the lag monster until December of '10 when Geminate got hit and I had already spent a year and a half prior to that in 0.0 space at that point. Fleet and module lag yes, but lag monster, no, thanks CCP!
• MOMs, you never heard of MOM hot drops in low sec, who would hotdrop a MOM onto a station? Now you get hotdropped flying a shuttle through low sec and trying to undock from a station.
• No certificate system (it's a joke anyways)
• No medals
• Empire was not mind numbingly dull and bloated with people
• SOV worth holding (again for emphasis)
• Large fleet battles worth attempting (...)
• Ugh, too many things to remember, I played 3-4 hours a night straight for two and a half years...

Can't tell I'm a tad disgruntled, can we? Shocked wtb EVE circa Trinity!

My 'classic' story of old EVE was outrunning CONCORD in an Atron...

In some 0.6 system, someone had done something to call CONCORD to the asteroid belt I was flying to. Back in these days mines were a type of weapon system and because obviously it couldn't possibly go horribly wrong, CONCORD used them.

So I warped into the belt and suddenly my overview has a red flashing entry on it... a mine. Now there was no actual CONCORD ship still in the belt, and the mine itself wasn't labeled as belonging to them, so I thought... well I'll just clean that up so I don't accidentally run into it while I'm hunting rats.

So I shot it and CONCORD come back to avenge their mine. But oldschool CONCORD were really quite a bunch of wusses. My untanked Atron with an afterburner survived long enough to fly out of their warp scramble range and I warped out. It was pretty awesome to save the ship that I'd worked so hard to get. And you really did have to work pretty hard to get even a frigate, none of the holding hand tutorials with free ships and implants you get now.

I also remember when Miner IIs were the ****, and ridiculously expensive. And when ice was first introduced and I fell asleep at the keyboard trying to mine all night because it sold for around 1mil per piece. Lost the barge to belt rats, but it didn't matter with the amount of cash I'd already made heh.

Heh, also just remembered another fun time:

I have BAD Gallente standings, so much so that the local militia would always engage me when ever I would enter thier space.

Well one day, long before militias got a boost in faction warfare, I got fed up with this bad treatment. I mean, yeah I made sure alot of thier fleet commanders had unfortunate accidents ... but thats no reason for them to treat me so badly.

So I setup a Dominix for Pve and fly into Gallente space looking to settle the score. I end up blowing up wave after wave of military spawns for a few hours. These spawns are white crosses on the overview so everyone slow boating the 15km to the gate is watching and assumes I am blowing up Concord and cheer me on. Fun times Smile.

Havent done it since the militias boost in FW, so I dont know if you can do this anymore without a support ship. *shrug*

Heh I killed four MC frigates as they tried to engage my Thorax coming back to Assah from Catch. Didn't change direction or anything. Had to give those guys credit for sticking with it - it worked out for them in the end.
