We all know that the EVE Online forums have a troll problem, and it is clearly a waste of CCP's resources to have to moderate it.

I propose that we employ some sort of user-based moderation system to filter out abusive comments, similar to Slashdot. For those who are not in the know, every comment is initially given a score of -1 to +2, with a default score of +1 for registered accounts, 0 for trial accounts, +2 for users with high "karma", or -1 for users with low "karma". As moderators read the comments attached to a thread, they click to moderate the comment, either up (+1) or down (-1).

Moderators may also choose to attach a particular descriptor to the comments as well, such as normal, offtopic, flamebait, troll, redundant, insightful, interesting, informative, funny, overrated, or underrated, with each corresponding to a -1 or +1 rating. So a comment may be seen to have a rating of "+1 insightful" or "+1 troll".

Moderation points add to a user's karma, and users with high "karma" are eligible to become moderators themselves. We could use a system which does not promote regular users as "moderators" and instead assigns five moderation points at a time to users based on the number of comments they have entered in the system once a user's moderation points are used up, they can no longer moderate articles (though they can be assigned more moderation points at a later date). CCP staff members would have an unlimited number of moderation points.

What do you all think? (+1 Insightful maybe?)

That's awesome until an alliance decides they don't like you and spams you into forum oblivion.

Its a good idea in theory but people abuse these Karma systems too negaitvely rating players for the pettiest of things.

I'd -1 all the good posts and +2 the trolls, just for the lulz.

Yeah, no.

I've seen that kind of mechanism on other game forums, and it just doesn't work. It becomes political in roughly zero seconds and then the whole point of it is lost.

It only increases the moderator workload without actually improving anything that couldn't be handled by simply calling on the moderators directly.

Trolls are +1 in my system.

Think how boring forums would be if everyone just agreed with each other.

Trolls should always be modded up +1 to promote a healthy forum ecosystem and to stimulate healthy debate and discussion over serious issues.

If I understand this correctly you want to a Digg Up / Bury feature in the forums. Might not be bad.

After a couple of weeks this forum would be full of karma -10 trolls claiming you are not a real troll if your karma is above -5.

I'd support this one, though the forums are on death row as it is already. 'Read somewhere a while back the EVE Gate will eventually just swallow them.

Still, one way or another, the troll problem is getting bloody stupid, so this idea - mayhap with some anti-abuse elements - seems as good a suggestion as any.

Me, I'm more in favour of less lenient anti-troll policies from the moderators, I guess. The Escapist's forums seem to have a nice way of dealing with that sort of thing.

Basically we need a forum script that wouldn't have been embarrassing in 1998. The lack of forum features (like NOT having to log in every 2-3 minutes ffs) is just... amazing.

I've held off on saying much about it because I'd assumed that CCP were going to rework the forums LIKE THEY PROMISED US REPEATEDLY OVER THE YEARS THAT THEY WOULD with the launch of EVEgate. But: they didn't.

Add ability to block/ignore individuals and corporations/alliances. There was a script for Firefox that did that, called monkey something .. worked like a charm.

If the lame social media crap with +1/-1 was to be implemented you'd see hate campaigns between the null-sec numb-skulls left and right, thanks but no thanks.
The ingrates have more than enough outlets for their anti-social urges within the game, no point in letting it take over the forums more than it has.

Even with people like this ---^ on the forum, it's a bad idea. There are reasons for a representative government rather then a straight out democracy. Mob mentality being a big part of it. No we don't elect the moderators here, but at least they are usually resposible with thier power. Most people wouldn't be.
