Alright, we have these huge fleet battles which are very reminiscent of Star Wars, but what about
a giant man made planet?

I would love to see a group of alliances actually build and construct one! How cool would it be to create a planet sized ship, something worthy of the name Death Star.

The effort it would take to construct a death star would be staggering for one corp or for even one alliance, but imagine a team of alliances working together to construct the ultimate technological terror. It would require a massive amount of ISK and resources but once complete it would be an 8th wonder of the world!

Think BIG CCP!

Funny, but I remember years ago reading about the introduction of and then the construction of outposts - sounded like a mammoth effort/achievement back then and put me in mind of the Death Star.

But, anyway, terrible idea. Really terrible.

And if said death star had 20X the HP of a titan, meaning you'd need a massive fleet to take it out,and would eventually kill the node running that system?

Adding more HP does not increase the amount of players needed to kill it. It just makes it take longer.

With 20X the HP of a titan remember that, and that's the base value, not the value with the pilot controling it,Add an 8/8/8 slot layout for weapons/cap/tank and it's own version of a doomsday, but one that's powerfull enough to wipe out titans in a single blast, noo matter how well fitted it is,and can be fired every 10 minutes just like a titan DD....Twisted Evil

Now consider that said death star, also has it's own support fleet too, which is something to keep in mind,in fact i'd even go so far as it basically also having all the abilities that outposts posses, including production facilities for ammo and ship replacements, and a much larger ship maintenance bay so that entire fleets can be carried aboard, ready for battle, and deploy immediately after said death star arrives at it's destination....Twisted Evil

Obviously said ship ould be at least 10~20X more expensive to make than a titan(likely aproaching or even surpassing 1 trillion isk),and even producing one of these things should take a better part of an entire year, and the skills needed also take 1 year + to train up basically, making a titan easy to train up and cheap by comparison.

I'm thinking ultimate plaform of doom....Something that should and will scare titan pilots engaging it,especially if it's their titan that's next on the shoot list for the death stars Doomsday weapon...Kiss that titan goodbye, much like a titan pilot can blow up a smaller carrier, and even a dreadnaught with it's own DD as well.

if it would be good and useful and at least marginally worth it they will eventually be churned out en masse just like titans. No price limit is gonna stop that, also just adding more HP just makes it easier to logoff and not die, thats about it. If it was like a pos and maybe had a reinforcement timer that'd be interesting ;p Still no need for one.

Also the death star was not planet sized, it was the size of a moon.

Impossible,as the actual construction time for each one should take at least 6 months minimum,so it's location wouldd have to remain a complete secret while it's being built, and of course defended at all times.

Put it this way,the average titan needs 6000+ capital ship parts, which at 10 000m3 each for each capital ship component....Building this death star should beat that by at least 15X more capital ship parts,so the mineral requirements alone are immense,as well as the time needed to build those 100 000 capital ship parts, then concentrate all those parts in one location, and of course, the final assembly time until it's ready.

It's a project that will have many aliance sized industrial divisions working very hard for a very long time until it's completion, with plenty of discussions if they'd rather build 15 titans or 1 of these i'm sure.

if something like this was made, it would be pretty cool.

foreseeable limitations to it.

-Has no propulsion system, can only move by jumping to cynos.
-If it uses its super weapon, it can't jump for a VERY long time.
-Is vulnerable after using its super weapon.
-It has no turret or missile hard points.
-If the pilot logs off it stays for 1 hour.
-The pilot can't eject from it and if it gets blown up the pilot gets podded too.
-Can't use titan bridges.
-a delay effect on how long it takes to use the super weapon.

I wouldn't mind seeing one as long as it can use its super weapon on a pos.

Those first 2 i can definitely agree with.
Quote:

You already covered that with your second point(not being able to jump for a long time).
Quote:

-It has no turret or missile hard points.

It still needs standard defences and not just the DD itself,so i don't see that one as being a realistic option.
Quote:

-If the pilot logs off it stays for 1 hour.

Assuming the ship is already under agression by a hostile force,i'm all for that.
Quote:

-The pilot can't eject from it and if it gets blown up the pilot gets podded too.

I'd have to disagree with this one too, since being able to eject from it opens up the potential of it being captured,if a pilot on your side has the skills to fly it,and it would be one hell of a war trophy afterall.
Quote:

-Can't use titan bridges.

Wouldn't need to,as it has it's own jump drive, though given it's size,it would use a lot of fuel for said jump, and the jump range could be the same as titans, which would help in fleet movements.

Quote:

-a delay effect on how long it takes to use the super weapon.

Definitely, and it can be every 10 mins or longer, but the standard weapons it has, when fired in a group, whould be able to take out a battleship in one shot, similar to what titans can do with their guns.

Quote:

Kinda hard since the ship can't move, unless the cyno it's jumping to is close to that hostile POS.

I was thinking more in the way the actual deathstar doomsday laser worked, when the used it it didn't go zap instantly, it went through a cycle that could potentially let something escape.

considering that the range on the super weapon should be pretty long (due to not being able to move), i think you could easily place a cyno close enough to a pos for it to work.

a death star would shred through titans like a
laser beam through foam. Caps trying to go up
against it would fail miserably.... no a death star could only be killed by

1. Small fast flying ship, frigates or cruisers class.
2. Saboteurs from DUST 514 fighting inside the base
disabling it's systems so the small fleet can go through the shields/defensive barriers.

It would make the skill HACKING a hell of a lot more useful to train then what it does now.

It would be a team effort both in space and inside the base.

oh but how would the pilots even get into the base if
the shields are up, you ask?

Simple just like in the movie, you actually have to hijack a corp ship (hijacking is currently not a game mechanic unless you eject )

hijacked ship could land and deploy a small team, team
1st priority would be to disable sensors so caps can warp in and disable shields... yeah I'm thinking that only caps would break through shields, BUT as soon as it goes into armor caps are ineffective...

launch FIGHTERS! fighters have to actually fly inside the structure and attack a weak spot... every death star has a weak spot but the coordinated effort of infantry, sabotage, caps, titans and frigates can bring down a death star.

Also a complete nube, we'll call him Nube Skywalker can jump in a t1 ship fly into the heart of the thing
and blow it up. Only small ships allowed both t2 and t1.

Small reminder: few years back CCP stated deads will be the HEAVIEST DPS ships in game and titans will be only logistic tools (doomsday was supposed to be defensive weapon for them). Check TQ now.

So how would it end?
death star (or w/ever) becomes mobile station --> pilot whines about being bored --> pilot geats peashooter --> pilot whines peashooter is too small --> pilot gets uberomgwtfbbq peashooter

CCP/players think about OMG deathstar as new ship class. Bigger better and having only logistic capabilities.

cyndrogen
Posted - 2010.05.22 07:22:00 - [25]

I actually like the logistics idea, it would make the death star a tool for fleets to gain advantage over corps with more resources. It would be made from unobtanium, no shields but cannot be damaged by ships, small or big.

Only way to disable a death star is to fly inside it with a small frigate and take it out, but in order to gain access you have to actually hack it and infiltrate using a dust team.

Actually it can, as you can just ctrl-q in your supercap and if they dont have the dps to kill you in 15 minutes your ship dissappears.

Incorrect.
No fleet would be able to kill it; the defensive systems and main weapons would pwn the mightiest of fleets.

Only a single pilot in a nano'd out stealth bomber would be able to deliver the deathblow with two uncannily well placed torpedoes.
