I think it would be lovely if there was some decales that could be placed on the ships, and maybe able to chose between some variations in colors.

One more for the chopping block.

For goodness sake, its been said once, its been said a million times. It's never going to happen, because it would crash the server 7 times a day just from trying to render 1,000 completely different ships in Jita, let alone what would happen when there was a decently sized fleet fight.

Er.. The colors can be a simple different texture, no advance method required, thus no real difference.

Instead of loading. Shiptexture, it would load, Shiptexture_a, _b, _c e.t.c. which wouldn't cause any performance lose, or real server trafic.

Decales can be done in a simple layer system, that gives no real loading problems, since its just an additional thing to load.
Basicly A transparent texture ontop of the other, where only the colors of the decales would shrine through, again, not really that, server would simply tell the client to load.
(whatever they use to id individual ships right now)_decale

remember _all_ rendering is done clientside not server. If it was on server it would be seriously ineffective.

That said, decales could just have a graphic option, so if you didn't want the load, you could just turn them off.

Oh look. A lag whiner who thinks he's qualified to make that judgement.

Tell us all then, why does the server not crash when it is already rendering ship skins? Graphically they may be different, but its only a few different set of Ones and Zeros to a computer.

I think it would be a good idea. Add you corporation flag to the side of you ship and your Corps. colors to keep things uniformed to a degree. Some tweaks here and there and should be able to be done. For after all game details is part of the game.

I donít know what it would do for lag, but something basic so as standardized colors for corps/alliances should be good.

You could do something so builders have some sort of skill or something so they can build different colored ships or such just like a special order in real life or something. It would add more depth to the game and give builders more to do. perhaps the "paint" for the ship can come from there new planet interaction as well.

of course, lag issue would have to be looked into before this ever hit the server as the lag is bad sometimes. Anyway just an idea.

Oh look. The one who says others aren't qualified (who knows, may be they aren't instead), but surely has no clue himself.
For the starters, server is not rendering anything at all. Possible lag may occur (or may not) on the client's side.

As for the corp logos, dreamed of by many (and I would like that too), I see one simple problem - CCP needs to re-model many ships. Where are you are going to put that "decal" on a rifter, for example ?

Its a great idea, but its been proposed many times.

CCP seem to dislike it.

Other people come up with spurious reasons why it cannot be done (although, their reasons always demonstrate a fundamental lack of understanding of how stuff works - like "dude, all that rendering on the server would make the hamster too tied").

What can you do?

It'd be cool but I don't think it's going to happen.

They don't really need to remodel the ships, since its just a texture, like they have textures now that wrap around the models...

As for decales you forget how big ships are, decales could easily be 'small' but then you have a reason to zoom in closer to the ships rather then seeing them at long range.

This may be close to workable now with the new skin packaging (see the art blogs for the new Scorpion)
