CCP Tanis i've got a serious question (even if it might sound stupid =)): isnt there a way to use battles on TQ to get you the required information as well?
I admit, PI can't be tested on tq since it's only available on sisi, however, we have several huge fleetfights on tq every day and I think that you should be able to collect more logs by using tq fleetfights since there are simple more of them.

Would it be safe to say that the lag issues from the previous expansion has been resolved if you are going ahead with testing new development??? Rolling Eyes

Hello all.
About the last test yesterday, (17-04), I really got the worst fps since Ive had change to my new machine, I got 99% of all battletime running at 0.1fps at the end of the battle, ( I was in W team ) I got 4fps, Just to saw me Carrier get popped by 3 Nyx. All the time I was able to listen ( i think in "realtime" ) but cant do anything. here my machine configuration:

QuadCore AMD Phenom X4 9550, 2200 MHz (11 x 200)
MotheBoard name Asus M3A32-MVP Deluxe (2 PCI, 4 PCI-E x16, 4 DDR2 DIMM, Audio, Gigabit LAN, IEEE-1394)
Chipset AMD 790FX, AMD K10
SystemMemory 4096 MB (DDR2-800 ECC DDR2 SDRAM)
DIMM1: G Skill F2-6400CL4-2GBPK 2 GB DDR2-800 DDR2 SDRAM (5-5-5-15 @ 400 MHz) (4-4-4-10 @ 266 MHz)
DIMM2: G Skill F2-6400CL4-2GBPK 2 GB DDR2-800 DDR2 SDRAM (5-5-5-15 @ 400 MHz) (4-4-4-10 @ 266 MHz)
ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series (512 MB)

I Had played in to diferents resolutions:

1920x1080 "fullscreen" and 1280x1024 windows and Ive got the same crap FPS.

Well, I will wait for the new test and pray to dont get freeze again.

good luck. ( to me )Neutral

From my experience programing I am guessing the reason they can't use TQ is to avoid the slowdowns caused by debugging code/statements and logging the results. Either of which could easily murder performance by itself. Based on the reports that observed performance has actually gotten much worse I am guessing that the programmers have resorted to attaching debug statements and code to EVERYTHING.

For someone who hasn't done coding, a fair(but imperfect) analogy to debugging code/statements would be if you were reading a novel and were forced to write a paragraph of your thoughts about every sentence you read as you read it. It would be arduously slow, compared with just reading the novel itself.

The funny thing is that CCP has openly talked (see 2009 Fanfest videos) about their logging capabilities and proprietary metrics gathering tools [to paraphrase]. CCP is [my assumption] gathering much more data from Tranquility activity than we know or are being told about.

With great frequency on Tranquility do massive numbers of players gather and perform the very actions that are requested of those in the "mass" testing sessions. To not put the resulting log files and bits captured seems like a completely wasted opportunity to observe and record the herds in the wild.

I think more specifically what they are doing in essence is bug hunting. Getting people to perform specific actions at a specific time to try and recreate what is actually happening. They may be able to get lots of data on TQ but since they aren't able to control and see what exactly is causing the lag, then its not able to help them.

Any updates on this?
Any new test events?
Any results?
Any progress?

FAKE EDIT:
It's also a bit annoying that the info is spread across different forum sections.

My estimate based on the lack of tests or feedback on them is that they did not find anything they could fix before Tyrannis was released. Once May 18th comes we'll have to start all over again on the new software base and see what comes out.

At the moment all resources will be focused on getting Tyrannis out the door in a somewhat good shape on time and lag fixing will have to wait.

You are quite right there.
I just found this:

Quote:

...

6:41 CCP_Hammerhead:
Right, the lag can be blamed on the game design being too much of a success. We got our wish and made small critical flash points that are fun to play (if they work). But we're working on it. Our leet coders have leads and should have what we feel will be major improvements in summer. Fixes to the "black screen" that is seen in large fleet battles when jumping into a new system.

...

6:43 CCP_Hammerhead:
I'm not a programmer and the things they are doing is pretty advanced as you can imagine so I won't attempt to go into the details. All I can really say is there is light at the end of the tunnel.

6:44 CCP_Hammerhead:
And I should add that we didn't want to put these changes in at the exact time we were launching a big new feature because it would be hard to judge the improvements compared to the performance change that will be caused by PI.

If that truly is the case then were gonna be loosing players, simple as, 0.0 fighting is a chore atm that people are doing to hold on to what they have or take what they realy want.

5 months for a fix to a problam that they created will not go down well.

An interesting choice of words. This performance "change" we will all see once PI is released should of course be read as "even worse performance". If there was any hope of an improvement the deceptive term change would not be used to hide what they know is coming.

We have been sitting in the dark since the last mass test, we need to know whats going on, how can CCP realy expect guys to pay for a game thats not even playable.

Id love to have large fleet fights but it just wont happen atm, CCP whats going on give us some form of an update on what you have planned.

A week before the expansion release? This is way too late in the production, testing and acceptance cycles to bother with superficial reporting to the EVE client-base.

CCP's [perceived] lack of commitment to repairing the broken gameplay introduced with Dominion becomes more truthful every day progress is neither demonstrated nor communicated.

To be surprised by an undocumented regression to a better performing game will be nice. To have proper and professional follow-through by CCP employees on their communication promises (non-bull**** test reporting) will be most welcome. To witness CCP evolve out of their current development house growing pains will be necessary.

Hello Tanis,

maybe you have missed it, but there is actually a war going on in 0.0, so we are kinda short on time, other than downtime, so we aint coming.

Can you also at some point test a large fight in highsec. The lag from only a 20v20 is awful, something is very different there, could be something with the agro timer list, who knows.

Also test in Kamela with a GCC fight with malitian involved, some reason that system lags something awful.

failed to write was i going to say before clicking post...

erm, yeah sometimes i believe depending on population density, multiple systems are placed on one node, which could cause node lagging in small fights, if there is say, a mission hub or something on the same node.

Its been like that in the Hale Constelation in Curse for years.

*informative link to CCP Hammerhead's obtuse method of updating the EVE community that game performance repairs will not be tied to the impending "expansion"*

My Dear CCP Tanis, Having recently witnessed the failure of CCP's code and / or hardware to support massive numbers of personnel in a contested-Sov null-sec system (Tribute's H-W9TY), why is it that we are nearly six months into the Dominion cluster **** and three months into these inane testing sessions with little-to-no relevant results reported (as promised) and not even an estimated projection on the implementation of the repair? And why are CCP personnel (Hammerhead, aka Noah Ward) providing delivery timing information (i.e., NOT with this expansion) in some interwebs gaming publication rather than directly to their clients via this web site?

Is this a simple communication issue? Is this a management problem? Is there enough funding to assign resources to truly address a currently-broken game feature that used to work as intended? And pertinent to your most recent testing requests, what the hell kind of operation are you people running where you ask for highly-skilled(*) and free testing bodies, but do not make good on communication promises or provide a tangible time frame for delivery on the repair?

(*) - EVE players, those with a reasonable amount of game time under the belts, should be classified as highly-skilled users in the context of testing the game. Taking some poor slob off of the street and putting them in front of a PC running EVE would not be a tenable testing scenario for large fleet fights. Asking for these players' time with absolutely no form of compensation is insulting, especially to those who understand and work in the field of Quality Assurance and User Acceptance Testing. If CCP expects its player base to contribute to these ridiculous tests, the very least that it could do is reward the players with good quality information on testing results and the repair status.

Howdy folks,

Dropping by to share some info and answer some questions:

Why not use TQ data/test on TQ?

Two reasons, really: First, as Chssmius suggests, debugging the live code would put too much stress on TQ and result in a massive loss of stability and performance, and we want TQ to run smoother, not worse.
Second, because we know how it works on TQ right now, what we really want to know is how it will perform on the new, Tyrannis code base. We've added a lot of stuff, changed plenty of stuff, added optimizations to address performance bottlenecks, and it is vital that we know how these changes have effected server and client performance overall.

Why haven't we heard more about the status of the Fleet/Lag investigation?

To be blunt, because we're still investigating it.

As with other investigations like this one, until we know all the facts and have resolved the problem, we feel that it is still too premature to put out all the details. Otherwise we run the risk of giving out information that ends up being incorrect and misleading people, which would really only make the whole situation more of a headache for everyone.

That said, I can assure you that we are still working on it and will always be working toward increasing the performance of EVE as a whole.

Remember, Mass-Testing is an ongoing effort to involve the community in assessing the overall quality of EVE, rather than something we do purely for this investigation. Mass-testing provides us a venue to investigate the reports of fleet issues/lag/jumping issues, but they are separate things.

Moar improvements to Mass-Testing, ORLY?

In the coming months, we will be continuing to iterate on the Mass-Testing program, focusing on improving our feedback and reporting mechanisms. As part of this, we will be working directly with you, the players of EVE, to determine what info is the right info to be putting out there to keep everyone as well informed as possible.

In addition to that we will also be looking into tools and features that we can add to make participating in these tests easier, more rewarding, and to have more of a chance to make a meaningful and positive impact on the performance of EVE as a whole. We stand firm in our commitment to working with the EVE community to make EVE better, more fun, and more rewarding for everyone.

Keep it coming!!

All the feedback, criticism, complaints, and kudos that you've posted/sent has been awesome. It may not seem like it, but we read every single post. Your input helps tell us not just how we're doing, but also helps us identify key areas where YOU want to see improvements the most. Developing in a vacuum is never a good thing, and the more feedback you folks give us, the more we can tune and tailor EVE to best suit the people who play it.

so.. keep it coming, good, bad, in between.. we still very much want to know what's on your minds!
