Take it for a fact (read up the economic reports if your in doubt), that major parts of the t2 productions are soley in the hand of old t2 bpo owners. Not only that they control the market, they get a larger share too. So ignoring some FUT from t2 bpo owners it is fair to say that 3% of the eve producers, make 80% of the available isk for the last 5 years.

Since phasing out t2 bpo complete seems to be a too bold move for ccp, I would propose to improve the ME of invented bpo. They should change the base ME of invented bpc to -2 instead of -4, reducing the disadvantage from 49% to 29% and allowing to improve that further using decryptors to 5% disadvantage. That should still give t2 bpo owners a lot of leverage, without discouraging 97% of the eve players.

Or... how about allowing research on BPC's so you can raise the ME to be competitive?

While we're at it, blueprint build times could be extended, the longer it takes to build something the easier it is for a small number of T2 BPO holders to supply the entire market. Time Research lab slots are used a lot less than Material Research slots, so this should be a sign that build times are sufficiently short that nobody feels a great benefit from improved build times.

Ummm, Whnat QEN are you reading ?. The only one that I saw with a section on T2 production was Q2 2009. And in it they said that only 33% of all T2 items were produced with BPO's.

I'll admit that it also says that 56% of ships are made by BPO's but that's still not a major part of the produciton system. It's only half.

If your inventing your main competition will be other inventors. Just ignore the BPO owners.

well, checking it a little closer you will soon find out that for most t2 items, the prices for a lot of items are below invention + production costs (assuming you accept that data cores are not for free (an interesting assessment I heard once to often) and that decryptors are not for free either.
And please count out the t2 ships where no t2 bpo exists, first.
Than taking only 33% you should check whether this is isk or items, and than take into account that t2 ammu somehow works for invention. Though selling 50k t2 cruise, does not represent the same wealth, one hulk poses.

Invention currently only works for some items where the market request is so high, that the bpo owners can not flood the market completely.

ps. 56% is the majority, not only a half. And please keep this 49% material advantage + no invention costs in mind.

I find pretty many items which are worth inventing, no, its even hard to find items which dont give ISK, the question is rather if your work is worth the ISK gain from inventing a particular item.

Invention is fine, keep in mind high rewards are always in equilibrium with people doing the work in order to achieve that rewards.
If you raise the margin, it would be consumed by the bigger mass of people getting into that in a short period of time.

After all, I've checked several T2 BPOs for rentability and my conclusion was the most BPOs are merely prestige objects, which would never pay off, unless you expect to play this game for the next 30-40 years, under the assumption you keep producing and selling on full load in that period of time, which is just unrealistic tbh. Sure, there are BPOs with ROI of 8-10 years, its hard to find some under 5, which is still enormous for a computer game.
