What is the best way to easily see my profit for a given time period?

If you're after "real number", i.e. escrow and fees/taxes included, try Wallet -> Balance sheet -> By journal. You might want to tick "Market related only" to filter out non-trade related journal entries like agent mission rewards, bounties etc. However, just like the ingame journal, these are raw numbers. You don't see what's selling good this way.

If you're looking for profit on trades (did you make more oney selling an item than you payed for it), try Wallet -> Balance sheet -> By transactions. All items are listed there. For a breakdown of a specific item, try Wallet -> Item details.

But with EWA there are a couple of ways to skin the cat. Play around with it and see which of its options works best for you. I myself work mainly with the Wallet Transactions and Wallet Journal windows, for example.

Yeah, I think that's what I was looking for. One of the views, journal balance, says that I have lost 80 billion since today last month (which is interesting as I have never had that amount of money, to my knowledge).

The other, says that I have made 3 billion. I think the discrepancy between this and other profit measuring sites like Eve profit probably comes from this program registering items when they are bought, not when they are sold, which means any number will always have the load of all the unsold inventory in it.

Is there a way to report that only takes into consideration items sold VS their purchase price, completely omitting items held, or used, but not sold?

Example: I buy a plex to consume, this is regustered in the program and will lower my profit stats on every other plex, if this is my only plex itll say profit is -100%, but this is ludicrous, for all intents and purposes this plex does not exist!

With the suggested reporting, I buy two plex, one to sell, one to consume, using isk. one of the two gets checked against the sale price, and the number for profit I get, is what remains of sell price - broker and whatever other relevant fees.

Plainly put, I don't know if I'm using the program wrong, but I know that I have neither lost 80 billion, nor only made 3. And the program lists inventory and items i used for consumption as loses when they have nothing to do with my trading activity. Is there a way to do what I ask that I haven't found? if not, I'd like to solicit it as a feature. I can't be the only person that would find utility in this.

Database Errors - My Story

I downloaded this tool to help me keep track of my trades, and to hopefully be able to review it later for analysis on profit and losses.

First thing, I downloaded full package installer and when I went to run the application I got "Database Errors" about not being able to connect.

So, I read over the 12 pages of comments so far... and was a little confused. I tried a buncha things following along as best I could above but I either kept screwing it up, or the information was outdated. Being half smart about these things I really didn't want to be beat by it so I kept at it and three hours later I have a process that works for the layman.

Uninstall whatever you got so far.
Reinstall BUT change the location of the database DURING INSTALL
When running the application select 'Run as Admin'

After everything else I tried, that's what worked for me.

I run Vista Ultimate.

I suspect the problem is Vista trying to get cute and hiding files under the offered folders for security reasons.

Now that I got the application working:
I appreciate the effort that went into it, but I was a little disapointed with the accounting mechanisms. Profit/Loss calculations are really just running totals of purchases and sales so more like net cash flow. If this was offset with OnHand inventory figures it would make more sense.

My suggestion: After the user imports the data, allow for 'Blank all transactions' and allow the user to assign a starting inventory value for whatever they have, then every item that is purchased is added to inventory at that value and sold will generate a profit of selling price - average purchase price.

Anyway, I like what's there, but the profit figures are a bit off, but I'll allow the system to accumulate data for a longer period of time and hopefully it will be more useful to me over time.

4 stars from me to the developer.

(oh, annother suggestion - since it is somewhat unclear how to actually get it up and running once started, you might want to move the items that need to be setup to a setup page with Step1, Step2, Step3 ect where they get API, then update account API, then character, ect).

Make sure that this file is

a) present in EWA's installation folder
b) you either run EWAAutoData from that folder or copy/move SNSCRC32.DLL to a folder within your PATH

If this file is missing from your machine, download it from http://eve.basicaware.de/DOWNLOAD/EVEWalletAware/snscrc32.dll

EWA version 2.0.24 along with a database update (version 21) has been released. You need to apply both updates in order for the new feature to work.

This new version lets you ignore wallet transactions, meaning those won't be shown anywhere nor used for calculations.

EWAAutoData hasen't been updated, as this is purely a change in how EWA handles existing data.

As always, see the version history for details.

I just recognized that I uploaded the new version with the old version number(2.0.23 instead of 2.0.24). While it has the new functionality, checking for an update will always result in a notice about a newer version being available.

I'll fix that tomorrow.

Heya Hel

I have another feature request - would it be possible to have the application throw an error message (both the auto-downloader) and the main client when there's a problem accessing the database? I've had a few instances where my machine crashed (yay overclocking) and left the db in an unusable state until I repaired with access. This is the situation I've encountered a couple times:

====================================================================================================
Date/Time: 6/4/2011 5:45:57 PM
EventID : 105
Event : DBError
-----
Cannot open database ''. It may not be a database that your application recognizes, or the file may be corrupt.
====================================================================================================
Date/Time: 6/4/2011 5:45:57 PM
EventID : 1001
Event : ApplicationError
-----
cEVEWalletTransaction:Save->-2147467259, Microsoft JET Database Engine, Cannot open database ''.
It may not be a database that your application recognizes, or the file may be corrupt.

It would be nice to have a notification when that occurs without having to go to the log - I often will just leave the auto-downloader running for weeks at a time without really doing any analysis only to find that I've been doing nothing but generating error messages for 2 weeks.

cheers!

Yeah, I guess that sounds appropriate. Until then, fly ... erhm ... overclock safe. Wink

- Make sure your version of EWA is the most current one as the "Ignore transactions" option (I guess that's what you're after) was added in the last release.

- Open the wallet transactions window.
- Find your PLEX purchase in there. The easiest way to do so is to set the "Item" filter to "PLEX". (If you also sell PLEX set the "Transaction type" filter to "Buy")
- Rightclick on the grid row with your PLEX purchase and select "Mark as ignored".

Hi Hel,

I've only just started using EWA recently, and I'm trying to use it to arrange some accountancy for my corporation. Nothing too flash, but I really need accurate totals for expense and revenue streams.

The issue I'm having is that large chunks of data are missing, and the totals for a couple of things are incorrect. The rental expenses were about 60% short of the actual figure, having missed some of the offices entirely. Wallet withdrawals, donations/deposits and sales taxes are not being listed at all. I've checked all these against the EVE ledger to get the accurate data, but I'm still about 890k short of actual income... and I'm concerned that the error may be in the totals for bounties and mission rewards/bonuses. Due to the massive number of entries in the journal for those income streams, I'm not inclined to trawl through them one by one to check them out - so I can't confirm that theory. I've looked everywhere else though.

Anyway, I'm just looking for a way to get reliable data, and EWA has all the functionality I want, excepting I'm experiencing incredible innaccuracy. I realise that these symptoms are very generic, but any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Your program is obviously the best, and I would dearly love to be able to make use of it.

Thank Hel.

EDIT: The data for contract deposits is also being ignored, contract brokers fees are being missed in part also. If the agent mission rewards/bonuses/bounties are being captured correctly... they would actually be the ONLY data which is correct.

Great program, but I really need to fix this issue or accountancy goes right out the window.

Just to make sure.
- Your EWA version is 2.0.24?
- Your DB version is 21?
- We're both talking about the wallet transaction window?
- Your popup menu looks different from this one, if you right click a row in the grid?

[Fake edit]
Yes, I just updated that part of the manual

Hmm, I thought this would be an easy fix. But as I was to about to add it, I realized that - due to the way the record adding/error logging stuff works in EWA - I would trigger a message box each single error (=each single record) = MASSIVE MESSAG BOX SPAM without you being able to stop it (except by killing the task).

This obviously needs some thinking ...

Well, "missing" is quite a broad term with which I hardly can figure out your problem. There are some general points you need to know about the API which I might mention (again):
- The API doesn't go as far back in time as your ingame wallet. Both wallet transactions and journals are restriced to 1 month worth of data
- With the recent changes to the journal and transactions API, it seems that the API even then doesn't provide all available data with one fetch, but "catches up" if you query the same data again. So, I'd suggest you grab the auto downloader and let it run in the background a couple of hours and check your data again.

Also, it would be good to know which of EWA's options (wallet journal window, balance sheet ...) you're exactly using. Otherwise I'm a bit lost as to where to look at.

Yeah, I know I'm giving you very little to work with here, but in all honesty I've got only very general symptoms with no obvious pattern. Your replies regarding the API month timeframe would seem to be the most likely culprit, which would theoretically have clipped the first 2 days of may's data.

I'm talking exclusively about the journal. I haven't paid attention, but I assume the wallet transaction list would be subject to the same timeframe, and therefore may have missing (outdated?) data also. A one ISK donation/corp acct withdrawal was done as a test in june, and that data comes up nicely, giving credence to your suggestion about the month timeframe.

Anyway, enough said, nothing to fix, the data is only good for 30 days and I understand that now.
I'll just do my accounting fortnightly :)

Thanks Hel for your help, and the awesome program.

No, I don't. A had a very brief look at Python a couple of weeks ago (spent a couple of hours reading about it and playing around with Entitiy's API wrapper), but haven't done some actual coding. And I most likely never will.

Hmm, here's a one quick way to solve that (bad pseudocode follows)

global bool hackMsgBoxShown = false
void resetFlag()
{
hackMsgBoxShown = false
}
void hackShowBox(string msg)
{
if hackMsgBoxShown
return

hackMsgBoxShown = true
msgbox.show(msg) ; bind resetFlag to the OK button
}

Clearly not a "good" way to solve the problem, but a time effective one ugh

This assumes that the box doesn't pause execution until the user presses OK, if it does .. then just reset the flag after the batch of DB work has been done and the boxes will be suppressed until then.

TBH I wish I could just patch this in and submit a diff to you, but VB6.... If I'm going to learn another language I'd rather not board the time machine to 1997 YARRRR!!

Yeah, I was thinking of doing it exactly the same way. And while it might not be "good" (globals never are, right?), it's perhaps the only way to integrate it at this stage.

Ahhh, boy, do I hate it.

This new dev blog migh be of interest to you guys, too.

TL;DR
Market Order API will only return active market orders.

Which is terribly annoying as I've just finally gotten around to implement an order alert feature which would let you see which orders changed their state between two API data queries. Basically the most common state would be a change from "Active" to "Expired/Fullfilled". That way you would have an easier way to figure out when and what to restock.

If the API change in the above linked dev blog goes through as it is, I can completely scrap anything I coded. Evil or Very Mad

Incarna introduced a change to the API (basically making more room for upcoming IDs).

I had to change both the application and the database for this. I haven't published the new version yet, as I hoped CCP would publish the new database dump for Incarna pretty close to the Incarna release itself and I could just publish *one* database update with both included (changes to the API and new Incarna items), but - hey - CCP had better things to do, like coming up with a way of slapping long established 3rd party devs right in the face.

I'm not currently boycotting CCP as things are still the way as they were in the past.

My thoughts are that I give CCP a grace period for publishing the new DB dump 'til next week (1 week after Incarna release). If there's still no new DB dump up, I'll release my new version and issue another DB update after CCP published Incarna data.

That said, the whole situation / state of the game / behavior of CCP within the last months is not exactly what I sense as "motivating". And this not just because of the 3rd party license stuff. For me it started with the security debacle of the new forums. It continued through the Incursion patchfest, the 3rd party licensing and finally peaked into the whole MT and CQ stuff.

My machine goes crazy while I'm docked. And I'm someone who doesn't care about shiny GFX. Since I started playing EVE more than 5 years ago, I have always turn my GFX settings to "low" and disabled all effects. Still my machine vents like an old steamboat.
