It really depends if there's some sort of cap on the number of servers TQ can utilize total. Space can always be expanded further; there are something like 7500 solar systems including w-space, 90% of which are uninhabited or sparsely inhabited with the 300,000ish active subscriptions EVE currently has.
Even if the game broke a million active subscriptions (with 150k PCU), I think the worst global issue would be overcrowding in some parts of highsec (which is easily fixable) and increased complaints about server performance from sov warfare (which isn't) |

You sound pretty clueless. First of all, it's not just one server. The Tranquility cluster consists of a large number of linked server blades, some handling background stuff like the filesystem, chats, market, etc. while most are dedicated to "nodes" running systems. Currently, most nodes are carrying a number of systems, with only a select few nodes being reserved for a single system (like Jita and the reinforced nodes they move temporarily crowded systems to). This structure can be developed and expanded for a very long time to come, theoretically culminating when every system is hosted on its own server blade. Even then, the software, background processes and the blade hardware itself can be upgraded indefinitely. Splitting Tranquility will not alleviate lag, as it would likely also involve dividing the cluster hardware in two, thus creating two shards with 50% population and 50% performance. |

I know. I just summed it up as "one server." Alot shorter than the paragraph you just wrote. Originally by: Alexeph Stoekai

Who said anything about splitting. I'm talking about adding a whole new "server/shard." That would alleviate the lag, no? |

I believe CCP stated at some presentation of their server tech, that 100.000 concurrent players was a sensible load today afaik. |

2003 they said 50k with numbers on anymore with the issues after 50k i would say the 2003 number to be more accurate. Of course the devs were more on hands in the community than now. |

Hmmm...well, let me see. How many "stupid" threads do we have on "lag" so far? Stupid opinion? Educated guess maybe? You'll eat your words when CCP does it...without warning. |

So then we're talking about a second shard with exactly the same hardware as TQ? I'd like to compliment you on an idea that will both more than double CCP's server costs at little to no benefit to the players, while also completely destroying one of the unique selling points of EVE. Also, you completely ignored the point I was making. The cost for constructing a second shard with the same level of hardware could much more easily be spent on (for example) doubling the number of nodes on TQ. That would also have the added benefit of not ruining the game. |

You mean to say a virgin EvE universe would not attract a massive wave of new subs? I disagree. |

Well, if you wanna get technical, here's the TechniColor™ version : Russia provided the man-power. America (and to some extent the british and other allies) provided the hardware. Atleast up until the russians actually got generals that could fight worth a damn (Stalin had killed off all the competent ones just before the war), and started making their own equipment (american trucks were responsible for moving the vast majority of supplies during the war) :-P Oh, and Turqoise Shader :-D |
