So you're in favour of removing hi-sec now...? Interesting.

I just said that a kiddie game called puzzle pirates is more hardcore than EVE so that EVE cannot claim that as unique selling point.

No, you said it has better PVP mechanics which are "just as" hardcore as EVE.

I'm all for drumming up popularity for EVE, but when Ambulation and other giant updates which dramatically change the game for the better happen there will be no way to mark that year as signifigant, because so many mediocre years won 'game of the year' already.

It is pointless to whine about these things because they are always a matter of taste. You had 5 nominees where 1 was an unoriginal grind, one kids game, 2 basic theme park MMOs and EVE. Maybe 3 of those had a real potential to win and EVE was one of them. A strong candidate in fact for anyone who prefers freedom, sandbox gameplay or doesn't value NPC grinding.

EVE has issues and will have them as long as the game keeps on being developed as do the rest, but it deserved to win just as much as any of the others. The final decision was just a matter of taste, but EVE deserved a top place and this time got the top position. See the award for what it is and tell the inner Kanye West in you to just let it go.

Just for the record, I'd rate Warhammer's PVP combat is much more *fun* than Eve's - and furthermore it's easy (and expected) for everyone to be able to advance in game purely by PVP. You're very literally able to log in and PVP from the time you log in to the time you log out... and all you need is 15-20 minutes to find a nice balanced fight.

It almost makes me want to allow an "Eve Arena" complete with betting and such when Incarna hits - all the Arena bull**** that I can stand without risking/losing 50 hours of work. I mean, in Warhammer you aren't risking a ton of time when you PVP in a full set of blue/purples - and it goes a long way to make sure that people *actually* PVP.

But... such a thing would quite likely kill the *actual* PVP in Eve. As much fun as it is to mindlessly PVP, Eve is really about more than that. Eve is about the total player interaction - from market PVP to ship PVP to alliance PVP. It's about so much more than simple combat.

What I would really really like to know the honest truth from CCP is....

Is getting this reward in any way at all, REALLY something your proud of getting or is this reward just a "meh" type of thing? I mean, is it an achievement, a goal, something to aspire to or just a piece of plastic?

I know thats kinda sounding rude, but its not towards CCP and not trying to be rude, its more about the award itself. What merit does it have to get it?

Personally, im happy to be able to play EVE and agree, its way better than the "others". ugh

And the fact that Puzzle Pirates has no highsec equivalent does not mean that I want to see highsec removed in EVE.

PP has better PVP mechanics because combat requires much more user interaction, PP has excellent mechanics to support and encourage solo and small team PVP, PP has better and more user-friendly (in my opinion) functionality to coordinate your own group of players in PVP, and finally because taking, holding, and making use of world space in PP is many times more interesting than it is in EVE even after the so-called sov overhaul.

I'm not kidding you.

If you look at the core game mechanics (and that's all I'm looking at from the objective perspective of a game designer) and ignore the puzzles and the cartoony pirates, then fundamentally, Puzzle Pirates is equally if not more hardcore than EVE, is certainly much more player-driven, and just has much more polished core gameplay.

If PP had shiny graphics, would have replaced the puzzles with mechanics aimed at a higher age group, and was put in a dark sci-fi setting, then I'm sure that most EVE players would have preferred to play PP instead, as it basically has everything EVE has and more, except for the setting and target audience.

Oh and the whining about single server, PP has a small handful of servers, which due to player world shaping have grown so much apart that they are now almost different games alltogether. At least the differences are much more significant than there is between Tranquility and the Asian EVE servers.

EVE is a great game but theres much to improve.

- User interface.
- Bugs.
- Giving lowsec a point.
- Missions boost, aka they are too dumb currently.
- Mining boost so its not an afk activity for Hulk pilots.
- Taxes revamp.
- and more

Just read the comments (8 pages) on the article's website. You see people who play/tried Eve that give congrats and recognize the uniqueness while accepting the flaws. Then you have the WOW fans, who's basic arguments are that WOW has more subscribers, who don't like the skill-up system, or who complain that new players can't catch up to old ones.

My impression: WOW must be populated by the most whiny, immature players there are.

One gem from the comments though: "On being a noob in Eve: Imagine you're a small child who's just been released into a park full of pedos"

This is a good questions Krinthe. Our outward facing messaging attempts to stay as far away from saying that we're "excited" about things we are doing or things EVE related, regardless of how [WRANGLERMODERATEDWORD] excited we actually are. Using phrasing like that often comes across as hackneyed, superfluous or even worse, disingenuous, which is why we try to avoid it (sometimes I slip up). Of course we're excited about it. It goes without saying and it shouldn't always be said.

However, in cases such as this we are truly proud of it. Like I'm smiling while I'm writing this proud.

Awards are, when we receive them, a validation of a lot of hard work that goes into the game. Frustration, triumph, late nights and early mornings. A bit of recognition in this case from one of the major online places that covers our industry that has a sizable community of its own. People who are exposed to a wide variety of what our industry has to offer.

Sure, the gaming industry as a whole is still a bit raw around the edges--a natural product of new technology fueling a new art form and being made by people choosing to do-what-they-love in almost every case. So you could consider winning awards like these, honestly, to feel as good as some of the major televised awards in other forms of entertainment. Should video games be considered for a technical Emmy? Soundtracks have their own Grammy category? I personally think so--there is some amazing stuff out there.

In my specific job as part of the PR and Community team, awards are also goals we set for ourselves. There are definite benefits to my efforts spreading the good word of EVE in having names and quotes to drop from third party sources.

And, of course, CCP is always looking for an excuse to celebrate...have you seen some of our leaders? We're kinda naturally inclined to "cheers to stuff"...
