As the year drew to a close, I received a number of evemails and convos from people asking when my 2009 Jita 100 survey would be unzipped from my bulging posting trousers. I was flattered to know that people remembered my attempt to provide some genuinely independent analysis of what the 'man on the street' (or should that be 'man in the fleet'?) thinks of Eve's major alliances. As I'm now a senior manager in my R/L company I have a lot more free time on my hands, so on NYE I spent the day at work conducting this year's survey. I'm sure some will flame me, as my political allegiances are well known, but others might find some interest in quantitative reporting.
JITA 100? WATCHOO TALKIN 'BOUT, WINDY?
Whoah there! Hold your horses, and I'll explain. In 2007 and 2008 I did an 'end of year' survey to find out what the 'average' pod-pilot thinks of the major alliances. Last year's survey can be found here: http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=960375. For those of us throwing custard pies in CAOD daily it's easy to get caught up in politics and lose a sense of perspective. The premise of the Jita 100 survey was simple...
METHODOLIGY.. UM METHADOLOGY... er... HOW DID YOU DO IT?
The Jita 100 survey is made up of 100 randomly selected passers by in Jita. I basically spent a tedious couple of hours mashing the convo button in local. Of course, it's possible that the Jita demographic isn't 100% representative of Eve as a whole, but it's as good as any. You're as likely to get the alt of a major alliance member as a 'carebear' trader, so the views of 0.0 residents are reflected to an extent. I've kept the questions the same as last year to provide a baseline for tracker research. I also kept the descriptions the same, because I can't be arsed to rewrite them.
Anyway, enough with the pillow talk. Let's get it on, baby.
Oh arse, I'll have to wait 5 mins before I post the next bit... nobody post ANY replies, ok? No, seriously. I mean it.

MOST FAMOUS ALLIANCE
This first question is intended to identify the alliance that 'stands out' from all others. That's not to say it's perceived as the 'best' or that it constitutes a value judgment, simply that it's the first one that comes to mind.
1. BoB/IT (28%) 2. Pandemic Legion (18%) 3. Goons (10%)
Probably not that surprising, and PL have come from nowhere on this one, so definitely a great year for them on that front (hehe, not that this will make up for last night). I imagine the Tourney played a significant part in this. Interestingly, almost all people who went for BoB/IT referred to 'BoB', so it will be a while (if ever?) before people consider IT to be the 'real' name. Another key point here is that there was much more of a 'long tail' in responses to this in comparison to previous surveys. Would it be rash to conclude that the 'age of the superpowers' has been and gone?
____________________
MOST POWERFUL ALLIANCE
1. NC (31%) 2. Pandemic Legion (23%) 3. BoB / IT (21%)
A big slide for BoB here. Interestingly the 'NC' is still seen as a single alliance, rather than as a number of alliances with shared goals. PL weren't even in the list last year, so they've certainly established themselves as a household name.
____________________
MOST FUN ALLIANCE
1. Atlas (18%) 2. Pandemic Legion (15%) 3. Bob / IT (11%)
Big change allround in this question! Goodfellas and Burn Eden were high up last year! Huge diversity of answers in this question though (with most people, predictably, claiming their own as the most fun... Fairly surprised to see how high Atlas scored, but I guess they were pretty high profile at the time with their 0.0 activity.
____________________
MOST MEMORABLE 2009 'MOMENT'
- Haargoth's disbanding of BoB
No contest here! Again a 'long tail' of replies (hence I've not included a 1, 2, 3 as I have with other questions). Again for most people this was an event that took place in their own alliance.

RESEARCHER'S OBSERVATIONS
One final observation that I thought was relevant. In previous years there's been a degree of 'dewy eyed respect' from the 'average joe' when talking about 0.0 alliances, but this year was utterly different. It's an estimate, but about 1 in 3 of the people I surveyed had almost no interest (and even a degree of contempt) for the major alliances. It seems that the activity of the 'elite' few is of less perceived relevance, and the accusations of metagaming / mud slinging have left many with a sense of ennui rather than awe.

A couple of clarifications to reply to evemails I received:
- I included the NC as a single 'alliance' because the point of the survey was to show the view of the general windypopulation. I am well aware that they are not a single alliance. I included any votes for Razor / MM in this total for completeness, but the vast majority referred to NC. Razor was the most referred to individual alliance from that block, but no single NC alliance would have been in a top ten.
- I received a few complaints that I had combined the IT and BoB votes. Again, I did this because the terms were used interchangeably by the people I surveyed.
Hope this clarifies.

I could always do a follow up survey, with questions suggested by the fine population of CAOD? Though I refuse to include the question "u mad?" I would, genuinely, quite like to know the average age of the major alliances though. |

I wasn't intending to do it more than every 6 months but if there's appetite from the community I'm happy to do it quarterly. It depends on the feedback in this thread really, as it's a lot of work. |
