Lets call it what it is. Creating an interface that requires: click drag, click drag, click drag, click drag.... and calls it an upgrage is fail.

If you have decent skills, bring the right ship with the right rigs, use the proper probing method and KNOW what you are doing then probing isn't difficult or slow at all. Some people like the technical part of how probing works, the other folks (ADHD with a 3 second attentionspan) don't.

I have ADHD and a 5 second attention span and I enjoy probing.

seriously the most tedious, mind numbingly annoying slit wristing activity out there, use 4 ,6 probes, nudging closer, then lost, then cant find again, then..... OMG!

lol sorry had to vent was going insane...

Then don't probe.

I actually like probing.. but would appreciate some automation.

Similar to targeting in combat, in that once you get a 3-way hit (a red dot) you can then right click on the dots and have them scanned down automatically. The time it takes to get a lock is dependent on your skills, the size of the object, the initial scan strength etc.

The totoal time it takes to get a lock would have to be comparable to doing it manually .. such that if you do it manually it would be .. say 10 to 20% faster, but you can so it automatically if you want.

The choice is yours.. Combatants and Ninja salvagers trying to scan down a ship would probably stick to manual. Miners and Wormhole scanners would probably go auto.

I can scan down a WH in about 4 or 5 minutes, but if you arrive in a new, untouched area of W-Space, it can take you an hour to scan the whole place down. Automating that would be brilliant.

You never said what you are scanning for. I will assume that you are trying to scan down player ships since exploration sites will not move around (except after downtime). If this is the case the pilot may have scanned you down using their directional scanner and warped to a safe spot otherwise you may have had the same operator errors I had with the new system.

With minimal skills I got my first warpable scan after 10 mintues due to struggles with small screen, an unresponsive mouse, and very very low fps. The next system I got one in 5 minutes. The third time I found one even quicker. Have not tried probbing player ships yet.

I beg your pardon? Astrometrics 1 (or 2 if looking for ships) is the same as 4... And 5 is needed only for DSPs, which in most cases he won't need.

and even then you'll need a strong signature to home in on.

?? Astrometrics has nothing to do on the signature strength...

Originally by: Swidgen
I'd suggest at least Astrometrics 4, Astro Acquisition 2, Astro Rangefinding 3 and Astro Pinpointing 2 for combat probe scanning to be minimally useful to you.

I beg to differ.. quite a lot. Either astro 2 or astro 5 (for deploying two sets of probes, but the OP doesn't seem to be at that level), rangefinding is a must at 4 (since it's the skill that regulates scan strength), acquisition and pinpointing could be at 2, but for hunting players you'll want them at 4 asap.

It's not correct to assume you can do anything at all (besides launching the probes) with less than Astrometrics 3. In fact, levels 1 and 2 of that skill might as well not even exist.

Err.... methinks you should be talking of rangefinding. Astrometrics at 2 is enough.

I like the probing system.

Im not the best, but I can probe my way around a wormhole pretty easily.

Luckily for me, I have a corp mate thats great at probing, so he usually scans down the ships for me. Razz

It can get irritating at times, like when you finally start shrinking your probes and the sig desides to split randomly, thats a little frustraiting, but most of the time its ok.

New probing is easy mode, although the ui could do with some tweaks to make it less fiddly to move probes.

If your losing sigs then your doing it wrong, don't have skills high enough or right ship for the job. I can get 100% hits on sites in minutes, ships in seconds once I get them on directional scan.

It's not /wrists but probing's a quick way to get RSI.

The new probing system is WAY WAY too easy to achieve hits IMO but people still seem able to fail horribly and not understand the basic principles.

Agreed. Too easy, and even the hardest sites can be scanned without having a single skill at 5, not even frigate 5. Confused

Having paid attention during the probing tutorial, and being used to manipulating things in a 3d perspective (3ds Max ftw!), I find probing horribly easy. Never tried the old system, and I don't think I want to. Two days ago, I scanned down a WH that led to a C1 W-space system in about 3 minutes with a regular off-the-shelf Incursus...

Sure, I got owned by the sleepers later, but the point is, I managed to scan down a wormhole, and then in the wormhole, scanned down the Phase Catalyst node that was my demise.

And I am one of those ADHD, 5-second-attention span people.

methinks OP didn't RTFM during the tutorial.

For the PvP player, the new system is pretty good. It works, its easy to understand and you can track down ships quickly. If you know your system you don't even need a warpable hit most times as you can guess exactly where they are.

The speed of the current system is fine for Hunting.

For the WH adventurers, either living in wormholes or Ninja WH mining and Plexing, the system is sucky. Why? Speed is not the issue, the tiresomely repetitive scan, shrink and move, scan, shrink and move simply drives you nuts.

When you arrive in a virgin system and do that first scan at 64AU and see a dozen or so hits.. you think to yourself.. well. there goes my next hour.

It ... is ... mind ... numbing.

Automating the repetitive task is what is needed so that it takes 20 ... even 30 minutes for a full system scan. I don't care if it takes the full 60 minutes and I still don't get the hardest few site as my skills are too low. I'll know by 30 minutes if I am likely to get a lock within the hour time limit - and there's incentive for skilling up - you scan down faster.

When I am scanning a WH, I'm not in a hurry. All I want is to get all the bookmarks and then I'll pick and choose where I'll mine, plex, suck fullerites, or select the next WH to jump through.

Keep the manual mode slick and quick for PvP but add a slower, automatic mode to reduce the drudgery of a complete system sweep.

Just thought of a "balancing nerf" for Auto-Scanning.

Prototype Cloak - cant cloak and scan at the same time
Improved Cloak - can scan and cloak, but at 1/4 auto scan rate
Covert Ops Cloak - can scan and cloak, but at 1/2 auto scan rate

And for fun ... if you are scanning and cloaked then you can be scanned down .. but with a very weak signal strength - basically you'd need Astrometrics 5, and probably Pinpointing 3 to have any hope of finding one.. but people will get there. Note that "scanning" = having active probes out. Lets just say thet others can detect the faint trace of your command signals out to control and communicate with the probes.

If you recall probes, then you de-cloak when they get back. (You cant jettison any while cloaked, so why stay cloaked you retrieve them?)

Would be nice to be able to make the probes 'snap' to quadrilation configuration for whatever scan range one chooses, snap to same level when one accidentally grabs the Z axis instead of the X or Y axis, and the ability to launch ALL probes in the launcher. And hey, some shortcuts for all this would be cool too.
