I recently successfully organized a treasure hunt for my corp.

Features:

  • The treasure hunt was held on a Saturday, starting after downtime. Participants could undertake the hunt any time within a 23 hour period, until downtime on Sunday.

  • Each participant was timed till they found a treasure hunt related item (not the treasure itself)

  • Fastest 3 contestants received prizes: Cerberus, Drake and an Apotheosis

  • All the treasure hunt was in high security space.

  • No special skills or ships were needed.

  • Each participant was given a starter pack via contract which contained a shuttle and a bookmark with some starting clues in the description of the bookmark.

  • Participants had to solve riddles, puzzles, anagrams and needed to have basic knowledge about the use of the map, contracts, market, eve-mail, bookmarks, containers and channels to complete the hunt.

The hunt was extremely complex to organize as I had to try and prevent exploits at every step. The experience was positive, and I believe I have managed to come up with a format that may be implemented on a wider scale.

I searched the forums for previous such events, and I believe there have not been too many. The issue with such events (imho) is that the scheduled time does not suit majority of Eve players, and I have attempted to remedy this.

The corp treasure hunt was personally sponsored, and I did not charge an entry fee, though the participants needed to spend up to 2 million during the hunt. I am not really interested in making a profit from an Eve-wide treasure hunt, though an entry fee will need to be charged, and contestants will be registered via this forum.

Some queries about conducting a similar Eve-wide treasure hunt:
  • Is there enough interest for such an event?

  • What should the prizes be ideally? First prize around 1 billion? Any chance of sponsors?

  • What sort of entry fee would be feasible?

  • Best time/day to schedule the event in the latter half of Dec?

  • Comments or suggestions?

Interesting idea; since you seem to have worked out the most problematic kinks in the system already, this could very well prove an interesting venture.

My reccomendation is to split this into a "hi-end" and "low-end" pair of events. You don't have to run them at the same time, or even run both.

- The low-end event would be more aimed at newer players. Prizes would be cheap, and thus many could be purchased (hopefully attracting a similarly higher number of participants). My reccomendations for prizes include frigates and perhaps some cheaper T2 modules that are commonly used (i.e., Damage Control II, Capacitor Recharger II). Slots could be up to 100, large, with (perhaps) a 200k ISK entry fee. 20m, assuming a full entry, could probably fund up to 30 frigates as prizes, with more possible if a bulk order could be gotten from a manufacturer at under-market value or added donations were provided.

- The hi-end event would be more aimed at experienced players with money to spare and a gambling streak. Prizes for this could include HACs, BSes, and faction modules. A five million entrance fee with 40 slots would provide 100m - with that amount, I could buy some faction mods for the event.

Edited because I forgot of something: Get some publicity about an event like this, and you will get some donations. Consdier sticking some advertising in if you aren't getting the donations.

If you do something in 0.0 let me know. Highsec cops don't like me too much, but I am interested.

Sounds interesting, but how would i know you wouldn't give the answers to you friends or simply say your friends (out of corp) didn't win the event?

Edit: on a side note, the last one i saw, the winners were from the same corp. Why? Because once the first guy got all the answers he gave them to his corp mates so they could finish it and get the minor prizes.

Great Idea mate, this is very interesting. Next time you have an event like this, be sure to submit a news lead here and talk to ISD about it, they will put it on the eve-news on the logon page and help get people interested, do this at least a week in advance though.

Sounds like it would be pretty fun. Just something outside the norm to do.

Becuase that kind of stupidity leaves you without an ounce of trust to your name; and in a game really short on trust, event organizers are one of the few trusted groups.

Bit of a failure of design there - putting the prizes all in once place leads to that kind of thing. Instead, create multiple paths to different prizes, each independant of each other.

Thank you all for your suggestions, interest and encouragement.

Esna Pitoojee, the issue I have a low-end event is that with countless hours required to organize it, I am unlikely to find time to do both a low end and high end one.

About the high end event: do you think 100m prize money is enough to attract participants? I gave away prizes worth 150m just for the corp event- and I could personally spend up to 200-300m on the prizes just for the fun of it. I was hoping to possibly have prizes worth 2 bil- with the first prize 1 bil (worth). Or maybe have the first prize as 500m and have multiple smaller prizes. I would appreciate some feedback on this.

Pittsburgh2989, I thought long about using some locations in low sec/0.0 but decided against it. Negotiating gate camps may be an interesting aspect, but there are a lot of potential associated unpredictable elements that I do not want part of this treasure hunt, but may consider in the future.

Randomina, I understand your concern about trust. There is nothing much I can say, except that I want to do this event for fun and I would not do anything to spoil it. Also interestingly, I do not think my friends would want any hints, as it would spoil their fun as well.

I am thinking of safekeeping the prizes with a trusted 3rd party- just to reassure participants. Though it would be nice if everybody trusts me and let me just do the event :)

As the event is timed- it is not a race to the finish line. If you finish it and give hints to a mate- he could do it quicker and get a better prize. You could use an alt and try and finish it faster as well. These are all exploits that I have thought of and will try and counter :)

Soarer 425, yes- something different to do in eve :)

Syberbolt8, and Esna- thank you for your tips on advertising. I will certainly try my best to promote the event (though I am bad at this sort of thing)

Sharpie15, will keep you informed.

And yes, Esna- paths will branch out for individual participants- and this is partly what makes it tough to organize, and thus there will be a limit to the number of participants.

I was basing my initial calculations on the basis that making money would be the desired result (I've run a few lotteries in the part with this in mind). If, however, you are OK with putting in more than you get back, then there is really no good reason why 100m would need to be an upper limit.

I would not expect to be able to get 2+Bil in prizes before you are an established event organizer. However, for 1b in prizes you could purchase a pair of faction frigates, some juicy faction mods, and a whole bunch of "consolation prizes." Personally, I like the "lots of little prizes with one big prize" approach as it draws the real fortune seekers after the large prize, but also those who might not be willing to risk their ISK in an event with fewer prizes.

As for advertising, I would suggest putting up cans at gates, but you also might want to contact EVE Radio or New Eden Radio and see if they would be willing to throw in a few mentions (for donations toward the prizes, as well as for final partipants.

Finally, when you put your event post on this forum, make it descriptive and flashy. "Smroski's Lottery #1 - Lots of prizes!" might attract some attention, but "--Faction Ships, faction mods, and hundreads of other prizes - Samroski's Lottery #1--" would attract more.

Treasure Hunts are always fun, specially if you provide interesting clues. I'll throw 1 x GTC into the prize draw, plus can as the trusted broker for the prizes. Just don't pick a date before New years!

Mail me in-game when you're ready to roll/interested.

Esna, thank you for the advice. Think I'll go with lots of prizes option.

Serenity, thanks for the GTC!

I have a few RL deadlines to meet over the next couple of weeks, thus this treasure hunt is now at least a month away. Will possibly schedule end-Jan.
