I'd like to try out Convoy raiding after reading a couple of threads around here about it. I'd like some help though and someone to guide me through what I should be doing.

Any volunteers?Very Happy

Ill take a shot at it, but I haven't done this in awhile.

First, you want to stay out of the range of the sentries, which was 150km last I herd. This means the station and all sentrie guns should be greater than 150km when you do a range scan.

Its best to have someone else grab the goods as the sentries might shoot if you enter there range.

Also watch your standings, they will drop to different factions. When I did this, we wouldn't let our standings toward any faction drop below 2.

Right now, I would almost say it might be better to find some other perfession.

As one who often used to Convoy hunt, can I stress Johnathans last comment about finding another profession. Convoy hunting is hard work, takes time, and often gives scant reward for the effort involved. But if you do wish to try it he's a few tips that I have found worked for me.

1. You are OK to get as a 100k's from the station guns. This doesn't give you much time to act as the convoys tend to go to warp at 120-130k from the station.

2. Only attack inbound convoys, never outbound. Station guns don't respond often when you are attacking inbound convoys. It's not their ships, or goods you are attacking

3. If you find an outbound convoy. Work out it's destination. At the moment they only run between stations in the same system, so you can work out where it is going from it's direction of travel. Warp to the destination station, then run out to the 120-130k mark and wait for them to jump in then spring your ambush

4. if you find a sweet system that puts out regular convoys. Set up bookmarks for your ambush positions, as eventually you will gain a low enough sec rating with the Corperations who's ship you are destroying, and station guns will fire even if you are not hunting.

6. If you have somebody gathering and hauling the loot for you. Don't gang with them, or they take a sec hit too and will be fired on by the station guns. So long as your gatherer/hauler stay's 'clean' you can often run the loot straight into the station and sell it where it was originally going.

Hope that helps.

Please say what is innaccurate. I haven't done any convoy raids for along time. But most of what I said was true back when I hunted them except the sentry gun range was only 100km.

Here is a link to a recent thread, about a month old.

The range on station sentries is 60km.

I use a kestrel and i start shooting when I get 70km from the nearest sentry.

Also, you don't take any sec status hit at all, you only lose standings with that particular corp. And as far as I've been able to tell, there's no aggression timer involved (You are attacking NPCs, after all), so by the time you've gathered the loot, you can dock with the station and seel it back to them, if you so choose.

I was doing this a few weeks ago. From what i have found, al long as the ships are NOT the same race as the station you are at (or near) the sentry guns wont fire, at least they didnt on me. After i was done killing, i immedietly docked, got my hauler, and looted the cans, and re-docked, all within a time frame of no more than 10 minutes. At one point in time, i was within 10 KM from the station, and no guns fired on me. Was like 20-30 away from the guns, still shooting missiles at the ships.

ok the inaccurate points

Quote:

1. You are OK to get as a 100k's from the station guns. This doesn't give you much time to act as the convoys tend to go to warp at 120-130k from the station.

some sentries will not open fire above the 60km mark .
if you see senty I-III , range will vary . some convoys
warp out at 80km from the station.

Quote:

2. Only attack inbound convoys, never outbound. Station guns don't respond often when you are attacking inbound convoys. It's not their ships, or goods you are attacking

i hit outbound convoys after 65km from the closest sentry.
but then again i hit a particular spot , different sentries
will have different ranges.

3. If you find an outbound convoy. Work out it's destination. At the moment they only run between stations in the same system, so you can work out where it is going from it's direction of travel. Warp to the destination station, then run out to the 120-130k mark and wait for them to jump in then spring your ambush

thats about right . some times the convoys end out of the
grid.

4. if you find a sweet system that puts out regular convoys. Set up bookmarks for your ambush positions, as eventually you will gain a low enough sec rating with the Corperations who's ship you are destroying, and station guns will fire even if you are not hunting.

from my exp , thats not true . i have an alt with -9 rating
with a corp , but im still able to dock and undock
and basicly sit on the sentries of that corp with no harm .
ofc thats not directly after killing the convoy , take
15minutes break or something.

you dont take sec hits , only rating hits .
i always take the loot right up and dock at another station
in system to dropoff . no problem .

if in doubt , make a fresh alt with a n00b ship and
experiment. nothing like learning from mistakes .
