My 3 week old industrial alt just got into a retriever and.... to my surprise, there isn't enough cpu to fit even 1 ice mining upgrade after I fit the 2 ice harvesters.

Even if I throw in a top named cpu upgrade, I can't fit the ice harvesting upgrade. I can BARELY fit one ice mining upgrade with a Co=processor II.

Am I missing something? Is there some rig that ups CPU? Something that could go into a mid slot to increase cpu or decrease harvesting time?

Or, am I doomed to not be able to fit 2 upgrades into the retreiver to speed ice harvesting?

And, while I'm on the subject... what is with that massive train time for mining barge 5 to get to the Covetor or into the exhumers??? Come on! 20 days?!

I haven't studied it closely, but my gut call is no. The Retriever really isn't made for high-end mining. I had to fit a coprocessor onto the one I just got in order to be able to fit a survey scanner in addition to a single MLU. I think you're either going to need a better ship or do without the upgrade for the time being.

It's almost impossible to fit 2 mining upgrades on a standard barge.

Do you have electronics 5 for more CPU??

Also there are no rigs that increase the CPU, and I'm not sure about any implants without loging into the game to check.

20 days for mining barge 5 is nothing. Just remember once you get that trained you are only a couple days from a mack/hulk. Don't even waste your time buying a covetor, you won't have it long.

No, only 3. But using eft to simulate, even with electronics 5 it would take a co-processir II to fit even one harvesting upgrade.

As for the 20 days for barge 5 to be in exhumers... unfortunatly, if I were to start barge 5 today, it would really be 22.5 days since I still only have my WP and P learnign skills at +7. I have 14 days of learnign skills before I can start barge 5 and have it take "only" 20 days... and then I ALSO have 11 days for astrogeo to 5 so I can train exhumers.

45 days.... yikes!

My combat alt throws off lots of unnamed loot. I think I'm going to stick with the retriever for now for low hastle ice harvesting and focus on the refining and manufacturing skills for the next month or two. Then I can go back to looking at exhumers.

So, you're willing to give up 10% CPU for a 5% bonus on cycle time? Wow, that's not a road I'd take. I run two harvesters on a Retriever with cargohold up to 4.9k m3. The lows are there for cargo, so use 'em.

Yes, with a co-proc II, it will just barely fit. You're not missing anything - the retriever is the barge equivalent of a cruiser: It's something to tide you over until you can skill up to that covetor/hulk.

Cargohold really only does you any good when you are mining it solo and dropping it off when you are full or have to wait a long while for your hauler. It is a retriever what are you going to use the extra cpu for a tank? Wasting perfectly good lows on cargohold that I wouldn't use when I could mine more ice per hour is a road I wouldn't take.

In response to the op, there is no way to fit two upgrades on a retriever and two miners

If you're new, Barge V is a great skill to train, it get's you to your hulk and, for most new indy players, it's the first big skill you'll train, really helping you get used to long skills all around. After Barge V, most skills seem short.

Except Exhumers V. Cool

Try taking a look at some of the other skills sometime. It's going to take me 17.5 days for Mining Barges V. Caldari Battleship V is 35 days. Marauders V is 49 days, and Jump Freighters V is 69 days. Any racial Titan V is 70 days for me. It took me about 3 weeks to train Caldari Cruiser V, longer than it's going to take Mining Barges. The longer you play, the more used to it you'll become and the less it'll bother you. It just seems like a long time right now. It's really not that bad.

I can fit ice mining upgrade perfectly well to my Retriever with Co-Processor I, same as normal mining laser upgrade. They seem to have same requirements, although I won't bother to check it right now. There isn't anyway to install two upgrades and two strips, but T2 upgrade should be possible after some "serious" training. But getting to Hulk would seem preferable, as T2 upgrades for Retriever would need mining upgrades, electronic upgrades and electronics to V.

And mining barge V only seems massive, as others have said, in the grand scheme that isn't that long...

The longer skills seem far, far worse when you're just starting the game, and have dozens of 1-day long skills you want to work on. Once you train every support skill to V, all of the major ships you wanted to V, and a few you kinda wanted to V, those long skills become less of a burden, and more of a boon, simply because you don't have to figure out what to train next when you're training a 30+ day skill :)

Thanks for the feedback.

This industrial alt was intended to just be something to "run in the background" while my main character is out fighting in factional warefare battles.

I've added cargo hold IIs to my retreiver so I can get two full cycles of ice mining before having to run back to base to drop off. I thought of dropping some giant secure containers and mining to them, but the run to the base every 18 min(including warp times) is less hastle.

And, yeah.... I suppose the long train to exhumers isn't that big of a deal. But, I have decided to put it off and instead focuse on reprocessing and manufacturing skills. My combat alt throws off hoarders full of materials I need to reprocess and turn into "stuff".

Couple days I'll be at ice harvesting 5 and will fit the Harvesters II... Should drop the time to carve off 4 blocks from 18 min to 14 or 15ish. That will have to do for now.

For what it is worth, I trained my alt to be an Orca pilot (about 90 days I think). Then alt trained to be a Hulk pilot (Orca and Hulk are very close in skills), then added Ice Harvesting 5 so I have two Mackinaws going (better than Orca + Mackinaw).

Alt is currently working on skills for mining crystals, then will likely start the long road to a Logistics ship.

You will find training an alt much easier, because long skills don't affect you as much.

Agreed.
I have 3 accounts and 4 active characters pretty much, and it is much easier to train the long skills on an alt. Training them on my main drives me nuts lol.

I'd suggest going for a Hulk and Mackinaw. They will draw in more ISK for you, which you can spend on your Faction Warfare alt's toys :)

You want to mine ice? Are you crazy? Shocked Have you heard that we're about to get an expansion? Have you heard it's going to make many POS's obsolete? I wonder what that will do to ice prices?

Fit cargo extenders to your lows, and mine rocks. You'll have to pay a little more attention to your alt, cause you're gonna fill up much faster, but you'll make a lot more isk that way. If you're gonna keep using that ship for a while, you might even think about cargo rigs.

If you are AFK mining (or background mining or whatever, you're not activly watching it) then what difference does it truely make if you can shave off a minute per cycle?
Instead of spending 5-6 days to save yourself a few minutes that you're not really missing anyway, i'd spend it on the learning skills to save myself a few minutes from every skill. Including the skills to save a me a minute per cycle, which i'd train later on if i actually wanted to watch my alt mining ice.

You can also stick rigs on the barges. Personally i'd go with Cargo rigs, then i can ignore the ice for longer :)
