With this change IRON should definitely reconsider their name Imperial Republic of the North and South is a bit long and odd as a ticker IRONAS. I'm thinking that perhaps Imperial Republic of Everywhere IRE would be more fun.

As for your examples, note how Britian was never (ok, spare me the Cromwell protectorate) a republic, Rome ceased to be a republic when enfranchisement was rendered irrelevant.

Britain was a parliamentary democracy by the time it had an empire; the monarch no longer had much legislative significance by the end of the 17th century.

Britain didn't exist as a political entity during Cromwell's time, the Protectorate was English.

It'd be a constitutional monarchy insofar as magna carta (1215?) limited the monarchy's powers, but no legal documents restrict further its exercise of power, only tradition. Suffice it to say, it doesn't change the fact that imperial is still an anathema to democracy.

Edited for word choice.
