Now the title may cover it it may not, but I want to ask your opinions on something I see lacking in EVE.

There is no difference between being one place in a system, and being another place in a system. Being closer to the sun you would think would slowly deplete your shields (like in the Empyrean Age) or being in an asteroid belt you would think that it would do the same because you would take a lot of kinetic hits. Would being close to a moon or planet slow your speed down of your ships?

What I want to get to here is that why not have different advantages and disadvantages to being different places in systems? The question would be I think working out the balance the pro's and con's of space weather or other effects present in systems or certain regions or certain celestial bodies.

We have something like this static in wormholes, why not make it organic in k-space? Why not make it be part of the natural phenomena of space?

Space weather would lead to space meteorologists.

We definately do not need more people running around making wild predictions that are rarely entirely accurate. Shocked

I'd like to see some plain black space with just the stars, too. The gas clouds are pretty, but some nice cool black space would be good.

That and better lighting effects from the stars, as in being near the outer planet everything being near pitch black. That would be cool.

I think you are missing a vital point. Space weather and space meteorologists also means space weathergirls.

At some point they added a "wind whistling across rocks" sound effect in belts. Dunno if it's still there. It made absolutely no sence but it was kinda cool to listen to when bored out of your gourd mining.

They have a proper name, you know.

(i just love to quote from the Clear Skies movie.)

I like this idea a lot, howver I think it would have to be done 'per grid' to avoid adding lag.

So if you land on the 'warp to planet' spot, you would have uniform speed reduction on that grid. Same with the sun and shields etc.

Sadly that would make for odd situations where you can leave grid and suddenly all effects disapeaer. Unless of course the effect is calculated every time you land on a grid, but that could be bad news for fleet fights.

To be honest, I can't see this causing too much in the way of lag/extra data.
Less if it's just cosmetic... 'cause then you can just transmit a byte or two to the client to say "dust storm" and let the client handle the rest.

I think the mechanic to do this kind of thing is already in-game anyway. There's at least one mission where you take environmental damage. I vaguely recall green mist and what looked like giant interplanetary tornados.

Personally, I agree with both sides. Make the backgrounds the black stars, etc, but have nebular areas on the star map, so say planet x is at the core, is all cloudy with the backround. Systems bordering it might enter in it and see such on the background. Just throwing it out there. I would like to have more depth to the environments myself though too. I enjoy it when I get a fight in a cloud in a mission. Examples:

greenish cloud and phantasm

coercer is white cloud area

Well the server would have to make a slightly more difficult calculation when determining your speed, but granted there would need to be no extra data sent to the client as both have the same information already.

Ok here we go! Adding in gravitational forces... Then people just activate a warp scrambler and the other person crashes into an asteroid or plant or even sun! Then they can say oops I didn't kill you you did! how ever i do think that solar winds would be nice along with the Blackness of space would be cool!

I don't really see getting close to a sun will have any effect on ships or crew. We have been flying around here for ages with no ill effects so no way of "suddenly" noticing that your genes are shredded :)

System or constellation wide Cosmic Radiation storms might be just the ticket though, let them rage for several days so they can be exploited by opportunistic aggressors.

Possible effects of various storm strengths/variations:
Disabling system defenses (cyno jammer, pos guns/mods etc.)
Influencing the sovereignty timers; during a storm one only needs 6hrs sovereignty disruption instead of 12hrs.
Makes generating a stable cyno impossible.
Etc. Etc.

Lots of possibilities really, certainly a good idea if it can be implemented without being too cheesy.

This!

Wherever I fly in EVE tehrs is gas. Gas gas gas!

I am sick of it. Do a combat site? Gas. In all of them. Come on!

Awesomeness, pure awesomeness. And I, too, would like some better lighting effects. Make the star bigger when you're close to it, and tiny when you're far away. At distant planets, it should look like just a tiny dot, and everything should be dark.

Weather would certainly add depth to gameplay, though. Imagine engagements decided by positioning, and invasions postponed on account of poor weather conditions. Excellent realism.
