Exactly what the title is asking, I am Gallente spec'd and for now intend to stay that way (I know Gallente sucks atm and all that) and am having trouble deciding what ship to train next.

Either the proteus or astarte, I would be using either for empire/low-sec small gang pvp, blaster fit for up close and personal target molesting. Obviously both are expensive (especially the t3) but I'm willing to make the investment and grounded IRL well enough not to get upset when I lose it.

So I'd like to hear some opinions from people who have flown them on how well they serve the role I intend to use either ship for.

Thanks for reading.

If you already know you're looking for a face melting doomship I think the Astarte is the better choice since the Proteus mainly adds flexibility and a better tank. I was unable to build a Proteus that out-damages an Astarte.

Apart from having better DPS using an Astarte has the big pschological benefit that you can happily charge into combat knowing you can afford three more even if you lose them. Charging with the mindset of "I'll win (or if not I don't care much)!" is much better than charging with "I hope I'll win, I can't afford losing many of these". Even if you don't care much it IS going to hurt loosing T3 ships at one time.

Besides if you start melting faces with a T3 ship you WILL be primaried. I'd only fly a ship that sticks out like that if it doesn't stick out - in other words, if your whole gang is flying T3.

I think the Arstarte will be primaried way more often because you never really know how is the Proteus going to be fitted. It can sometimes have a MASSIVE passive tank, wasting precious minutes just to blow it up. If you intend to use the Proteus like an Astarte, choose the Astarte. The proteus has some unique abilities and can fit a huge tank with some good dps, a cloak and a probe launcher and be a valuable ship in gangs (find people in plexes, in FW missions, in their safe spots, etc..)

As someone said before me, the dps is better on the Astarte and on both ships, you know you're going to die. Ships in pvp are made to die, they all die at some point. Astartes are waaaay cheaper and you won't be raging when the gang you're fighting ends up being bigger than what you expected and you cannot run because you're committed to the fight (blaster range).

if money is no object- go for the t3 cruiser. while the other posters make very good points, don't overlook the faster lock time, agility, smaller sig., and speed of the proteus.

an astarte may eft to more dps but a faster ship using blasters ends up dealing more damage by getting in range faster.

both get primaried for the same reason; their high dmg output and looking real nice on your killboard. you may get more fights, and perhaps people would engage when they otherwise wouldn't, with the prospect of a t3 kill.

only my opinion ofc, but i know what i'd choose if isk was no issue. Very Happy

Proteus is better in pretty much every way except pure dps and if your fitting an astarte for pure gank you have more money than sense.

The other reason to go proteus is that it can fit a huge tank and gank which is what you need for a blaster ship. Also you can buffer it which works much better for most gang engagements, particularly in high sec where you can have lots of logistics. Whereas your only viable choice with the astarte is to active tank it.

You can also refit you proteus to have an totally obscene damnation level buffer for use as an epic bait ship.

Proteus is of course more expensive though.

proteus has double the tank, 30% more speed, when overheating does the same damage.
astarte costs half as much or less.

I looked at this (admittedly) in EFT and found the only way there is any truth to that is with maxed out skills (all lvl 5) with a damnation and claymore in gang, and im pretty sure a few dmg hardwirings.

Not to take away from the setup. I feel like that is a very sound setup whether your maxed or not.

That is very true, i was going to say the dmg would be insane! seriously better than a Blaster mega with 5 ogres surely! checked of EFT allso this setup woulden;t work without what Air Scare said..
