This sounds like a great idea but I'm thinking a mobile outpost would be overpowered (IMO).

I'm kinda in agreement with Daedalus II with regards to the idea of a mobile POS. Have the hive/mother ship be able to jump once a week with all ships within the sheild jump using the Titan Bridgeing mechanic.

The ship itself will only be mobile with regards to it's jump drive and will only be able to jump to planets.

It would also be an idea having to have the ship be fueled like a POS so it must have a logistical supply and can't be used as a infinate staging post.

Heck if you really get involved it could be built with subsystems like the tech 3 ships. Some with extra cargo space while others have better defencive capabilities.

I think a "ship" like this could have some interesting possibilities if you add stuff like ambulation and some pos features on it. A ship which doesn't have combat purpose.

A new line of ships to specialize in. Relocation ships with limited mobility. A ship which you rarely need to pilot but which can be moved. A ship that can reside in high sec, low sec or nullsec. In null you move it like capitals, in low and high sec you pay a fee to some concord "relocation firm" and they move it for you. The ship doesn't have engines so it can not move but only during downtimes.

Maybe add Cynosural Field Generator II for relocation ships :p

There are various ways how to limit the mobility. Amount of fuel used, ship being very vulnerable to attacks after a relocation, ship being totally non-functional for certain time before/after relocation, limited relocations per week/month...

Here are few services these ship types could offer:
- trading services
- storage space for ships, modules and just stuff
- a "home" place for players, corps and alliances (ambulation)
- games
- manufacturing
- fun and games (ambulation)
- corp and alliance HQs
The bigger the ship, or depending what modules it has installed, the more services it could offer.

Instead of just one huge size you could have four sizes. One for small gangs, one for smaller corps, one for larger corps and one for alliances. While stations would continue to be the basic starter homes the homeships could be the better alternative with more stuff to spend money on. But the idea is not to make the relocation ship into a dollhouse you invest billions just to redecorate for lulz and prestige.

People and corps could be able to use the ship to storage their stuff or to use the ship as a public trade hub or just a home and entertainment center for themselves. And/or allow other people to board the ship and use the services too.

The idea of these ships could be that as a visitor or resident you don't need to pay taxes to any npc entity but you'd need to pay a fee to the ship owner entity. And rent for a room with certain allowance for storage space. Each ship size would have different amount of these slots available for players to purchase or rent. Like the smallest version could offer room for 5 players, the larger one for, say 20 people, and 50 and 200. Or something like that.

The idea of the ship is to make isk, the ability to move to new place in one go and have a home ship.

No idea if there is any need for a non-combat ship in eve though. And how to make the things to survive from attacks while still being destroyable but not too easily. How to make them worth destroying but also fun anough to protect and use. And how to not make them overpowered capitalist pwnage entities you can leave running making isk for you while you randomly kick people out of their slots and just be an evil land lord. Kinda like pvp secretary...

And getting the gui for permissions and user rights would add a nice byrocracy hell into the mix as well... Still, another nice piece of scifi I'd like to see in eve.

This idea floating about reminds me of the movie called "Krull".

Anyone remember that? The bad guys had this fortress that would move from one place to the other with each day. When in place, the bad guys would roam about, wreak havoc, etc. Krull is a fantasy movie, somewhat campy, but good for a laugh. An entire moving station or fortress with each downtime reminds me of this.

The more I think about it, the more I like it, specially for people like me who aren't using an alt so are corp/leadership spec. If those are prereq skills for operations, can make for some interesting things. Also being an industrial explorer corp, would be nice to have the hq mobile for more varied access to different empires.

I love the general idea here.

I have an interesting twist to suggest/point out in regards to the WH beacon suggested for jumping to another system. What happens if some either destroys the beacon or makes the WH its at collapse before dt?

Personally, I would make things a bit more unpredictable in regards to using the WH beacon by making it not so much a beacon as a deployable scanning array that randomly selects a WH to go through from those available in the system just before DT hits. If you want a story reason for this it could be as simple as the Jove supplied the tech (or it was stolen from them) but no instructions for use came with it, so we can only turn it on and see what happens.

Want art for these motherships?(the name is freed up we can use again!) Ill be available after I get the Stingray Corvette done.

However I do have to say you just smashed my toes for a scientific capitol ship that was going to have somewhere along the similar thought of mobile wormhole base, but now that you smashed them flat with this awsome idea I have to go back and rediscuss and reinterate my scientific capitol ships for explorers.

Lots of great ideas, and I have one to add of my own.

The "Hive Ship", for lack of a better name currently, seems to have some issues with the idea of people trying to undock while it's in transit or anything like that. CCP Incognito has stated as much at least a couple of times. To deal with this, why not give it a dual-mode operation.

Mode 1: Transit: while moving, the Hive Ship cannot be docked at, but, like a carrier or mothership (supercarrier), can carry a number of ships, as well as a whole slew of modules to fit or refit ships. While in this mode, it's shields are severely weakened due to the necessary transfer of power to the engines, thus making it very vulnerable to attack.

Mode 2: Mini-outpost: When finished transiting, the pilot of the Hive-Ship will "park" it at a pre-determined location (the warp in point of a Planet, for example) and cause the ship to enter an "Anchored" mode. The Pilot will be kicked into the station dock area in his pod and be able to use the ship as a station now. Others can do the same. Because the engines are offline, the shields are now significantly stronger, possibly even equal to or beyond that of a Large Control Tower. It has repair and cloning services like any other station. It has a strontium reserve for if it gets sieged (while in "reinforced", it cannot be unanchored). Once converted to this mode, it cannot be unanchored for at least 24 hours (thus preventing alliances from using it as a pwnmobile that will allow them to steamroll some system and move on without anyone being able to stop them).

I've considered such a ship for a long period of time and now that I see it being discussed, I think this is the only possible addition to the plan that I think would be of value.

An alternative to having to 'move' the Hive is that it is essentially static: existing within it's own small pocket of space.

Around the Hive are a cluster of wormholes that randomly sequence across K space and W space at each down time. Thus creating an illusion of movement.

Nothing exists within these deadspace style pockets except for the Hive and its associated wormholes. Corps based out of these Hive structures would be highly nomadic but still partially vulnerable if their deadspace pocket is found through exploration etc.

There was a Dr. Who episode (old series) that had a pirate planet. The planet was hollow and every year would jump to another system and around a planet. Then the pirate planet would lower drills and scoops (really old episode) and mine the victim planet till there was just a husk left.

We aren't talking that but talking about the movie reminded me of that show.

I love this idea. It makes me think of waterworld and the pirates who move around using a supertanker as a mobile base, or even independance day with the aliens moving from system to system to exploit resources then move on.

I think these "mobile bases" are a great way of thinkinjg outside the box, but these hive ships need some limits or restrictions so they don't render regular pos' obsolete. my first vision of these hiveships is moving around in wormholes, doing sleeper sites, harvesting resources like gas and ore, stockpiling it in the hiveship until you find an exit to empire or tradehubs to move out goods to sell.

it would make wormhole exploration alot more fun for a whole corp, more varied than a single static pos, and bring in a niche playstyle to the game.

This prompted a spin off idea - what if the Hive "station2 existed as a large(ish) asteroid?

This would provide concealment, and a novel method of travel - essentially by allowing the owner to move the asteroid style station from one system belt to another system belt.

Maybe it can mine too! Very Happy

Ideas lead to ideas lead to ideas.....

Someone mentioned asteroids and we have seen asteroid colonies in EvE.

In the book "Ringworld" by Larry Niven (which may have been the inspiration for Halo), they talked about the Dyson's Sphere and how one could be made. It was said that it might be possible to take enough metallic mass, like asteroids clustered together, and then melt it, spinning the whole ball causing it to expand into a large hollow metal sphere.

Ringworld itself, and the Halo, would take, as the book states, "enough mass equal to Jupiter".

I know this is not on the topic, but it appears that getting more than 4 hours of sleep allows me to access my memory of things.

The ark in the halo scifi has its own sun thats supposive artifical and its shape was to hard to discern on what it actually was supposed to be shaped as. It could very well be a dyson sphere in the making just never finished or purposly built that way to allow the construction of the halos.

As for my concept art Im been very busy myself and I got this one project the Manta I wanna get done before christmas.

I do think though that these ships would fit eve's definition of a mothership and should be named such, to bad you cant install guns on it and have the guns act like the pos guns as one dev stated earlier.

Slightly back on topic, what do you think of something like this:

Goal:
Mobile Outpost

Requirements:
Can fit a Clone Vat Bay (max 6 jump clones)
Corporate Hangers (100,000 m3)
Ship Maintenance Bay (20,000,000 m3)
Cargo Space (40,000 m3)
Drone Bay (300 m3)
Fuel Bay (7,500 m3) (holds approx 45 days fuel)

Fuel for Siege Mode:
100 Liquid Ozone, 100 Heavy Water, and 200 Strontium Clathrates per hour

Highs: 4
Mediums: 6
Lows: 4
Rigs: 2 Large

Limitations:
Can not fit Gang Modules
Because it can fly in Hi-Sec, it can not build capital ships
Only fly normal drones (tech I and II), no fighters
Ship Maintenance Bay can not carry any capitals ships (except maybe an Orca)

Notes:
We do not want to replace the Orca/Rorqual, hence no ore bay, or gang links, tractor bonus
This is NOT a fighting ship, hence no missile or turret mounts
The ship can normal gates and wormholes (having a jump drive is something we may consider)
There should be enough slots for to have one of each new industry module (listed below), plus basic tank, remote rep modules
Ship will be around the size of a Rorqual/Charon, and will be able to dock at stations
Will require a new skill Mobile Outpost Command

Siege Mode:
In order to activate the clone vat bay, Refinery/Reprocessing Plant, manufacturing lines, research and invention slots, the ship must go into siege mode
In siege mode, the ship can not move and consumes fuel
The ship will remain in space when the pilot logs IF it is in siege mode (and no one else will be able to board it as long as it remains in siege mode)

New Modules:
Manufacturing Module: Medium slot, adds 2 manufacturing lines
Research Module: Medium slot, adds 1 ME slot and 1 PE slot
Invention Module: Medium slot, adds 2 invention slots
Refinery/Reprocessing Plant Module: Medium slot (50% base yield)

Shield/Armor/Hull
I would put them somewhere between Rorqual/Charon/large control tower

What happens to jump clones installed on a mothership/titan when that gets blown up?

And wouldn't this "hive ship" just be the perfect application for the moniker "Mother Ship"?

The Mother Ship should be destructible, the outcome would simply be that all ships previously docked with it would be destroyed - the folks who blow up the Mother Ship will find wrecks corresponding to the Mother Ship and all the ships that were marked as "docked" with that "station".

The ingame mechanic could be as primitive as simply undocking and spontaneously destructing all docked ships, during the "death throes" of the Mothership. This mechanic could then be applied to outposts so that they can actually be destroyed.

I dont think you should limit the drone capabilities of it because if the hive gets attacked by a fleet and you have everyone docked at the time your basicly screwed. I think you should be able to us deployable small and meduim turrents to help defend it. I think you should also be able to bridge into wormholes and basically be a POS station for it. That way your corp can use some of the better things like harvesting arrays and such that would require an actual POS. I dont think it should be dockable if its the size of a cap and has the abilities of a station. I agree that it shouldnt have an ore bay or be able to use mining turrents because we have barges and the above mentioned.
