I was thinking earlier that one way to improve life for 0.0 space dwellers would be to allow people to make NPC pos fuel from moons by doing reactions. For instance, you could react atmospheric gases into oxygen by 'filtering it' or reacting atmospheric gasses and evaporite deposits into coolant, ect. For some of the ones, like robotics or mechanical parts, it could always require R8s or require them to be built out of reacted R4s and/or R8s in a component assembly array. Maybe require enriched uranium to be made out of a reaction of 2 common R8s or even mined and reacted from mercoxit.

This purpose is twofold.

It would make 'crappy' moons with only R4s valuable with the right combination so you could react them into pos fuel.

It would increase the value of R4 and R8 moons, especially since a corp or alliance could react what they need.

It would also allow smaller corps living in 0.0 to sustain themselves better. You wouldn't always have to import fuel from empire (although a lot of the R4 only moons in empire would become more valuable). Instead you could just throw up a few poses making the non-ice products and then mine ice for the rest of what you need.

The amount of fuel that would be produced per reaction would be proportional to what a pos uses each hour. However, a few fuel production poses would go a long way towards supporting a pos network.

And with sov moving away from using poses, why not make it easier for a small corp who wants to live in 0.0 to setup some infrastructure?

The only problem with your proposal is that of... What will the ice miners of eve do when, not only poses that exist for the sole purpose of claiming sov disappear but now also having their income cut by moongoo poses that fuel themselves.

What about the haulers? What about siege warfare where you kill said haulers to prevent the poses being fueled?
Sure it is possible to put a pos into siege mode but there is so much more to it, killing the supplies of fuel can bring an alliance to it's knees as their poses go OFFLINE rather than into siege mode.

It just doesn't work out in my head, that's all.

What I am saying is that you still would have to mine the ice like normal. Its just that the pos fuel which is only sold by NPCs would now be able to be created by players. Except the charters, you would still have to buy those.

edit: also all of the gas moons in empire would be able to create fuel. some alliances may not want to bother with it if its just easier to ship it down

I believe this is about the NPC goods, as robotics, enriched uranium, coolant, mechanical parts etc and not the actual ice products. You would still have to mine ice, you'd just not have to make tons of freighter runs with the NPC goods.

You'd still be hauling the ice etc, just not jumping just the NPC goods out from empire.

that is correct. this is only for the npc fuels. because really npcs shouldn't seed that much. it could create a whole new pos profession by allowing fuel to be created

In some ways I agree with the idea (have been thinking about a similar idea of WH space). However CCP introduced NPC fuel for a number of reasons.

1) As an isk sink
2) To make POS logistics a bit more complicated so more effort is needed.
3) So that alliances cannot be 100% self sufficient and have to trade with empire.

If people could make all the trade goods that POS needs it becomes theoretically possible for an alliance to become complete independent of empire*. It would not be practical as they would have to mine large amounts of low end ore but possible.

* the only item they could produce is skill books, but this could easily brought and installed using jump clones.

CCP did say at one point once planetary interaction was out, planets would produce trade goods. So CCP are thinking about this.

…it would also make 0.0 more self-reliant, and would remove an ISK sink — both of which are bad things.

I think ice production is fine the way it is. There is already plenty of deposits available from moons. Why not just make moons have isk as a material option?

They do have an ISK material option, it's called R64s. Laughing

How about the NPC sell BPC with like 10,000 runs on them. That way you can use the BPC to produce for your self or sell on them market. This opens up a new market, yet since all there is BPC you still have the isk sink. And since the BPC are in the Data base, and yes the BPC are in the data base because I have gotten 1 run BPC for Robotics as a reward from agents. Pecifically in the mission "they Robot". You don't have much to do on the code side.

Edit: fixed mission name
