I had the exact same problem 10 minutes ago. I found this link here for a windows live messenger patch:

http://oss.netfarm.it/wlm.php

I used it with no problems, but use your own discretion if you think it's a dodgy file.

Messenger is heaps of fail and people using it will die alone, so use Pidgin or Miranda IM.

Edit the installer with Orca and remove the "LaunchCondition" table from the installer similar to what is seen here.

...I'm sorry, but if you're not aware that you can turn all of that off/disable it, then just..ugghh.

The very SECOND the first version of MSNM came out that had nudging/etc. I immediately disabled it, because I knew some troll on my friends list would attempt to spam me with it thinking it was cool/fun.

They did, and it had no affect on me. 'Cause I already had it disabled. ;D

Actually, 7 is very easy to use compared to Vista and looks better than XP while performing better IMO. (This is true for both a computer with 1gig of ram, 2 gigs of ram and 4gigs). 7 is 100% awesome on a Disk.

I have to disagree with you about Vista. I've been using it for nearly 2 years now with no OS problems at all (aside from a couple of my older applications that would no longer run - but that was not unexpected).

Can't speak to Windows 7 but Vista was definately better than the sky is falling crowd would have liked us to believe.
