Seems like CCP will be cutting out a large part of the market, which leads me to why? Collusion with Microsoft and Sony to produce only a console version?

If you have seen the video interview with CCP CEO Hilmar Petursson you will notice he has a bit of a smirk when questioned about gaming platforms. So I wouldn't rule it out for after the initial release.

Games are very often made for the consoles and then ported to PC either by the original devs or a third party company if it performs well/better than expected. I would imagine DUST 514 will be no different.

Intelligent response, I guess we'll have to wait and see until after the "dust" settles.

Because:
a) They want to expand their technical expertise to other platforms besides the PC.
b) They might feel that it might be easier to reign in hackers on a console, since FPS's have such horrible problems with hackers/cheaters.
c) They might feel that developing for a console costs less than developing for PC (less debugging and compatibility testing needed).
d) They might feel that developing for a console is easier than developing for a PC.
e) Improving business relations with M$, with whom they already have strong relations due to CCP's use of quite a large amount of M$'s products.
f) They are seeking to expand their user-base. Perhaps they feel that subscriptions to EVE are not what they should be and it is high time that they expand to other markets.

EDIT: I should mention that I personally hope that CCP plans on porting DUST 514 to PC, as I don't want to spend money on a console to play DUST 514. However, I acknowledge that CCP has the freedom to do what they will with their time/staff/assets. If we the players don't like it, we can speak with our wallets and not buy it.

Yeah, I don't want to buy a console just to play this game.

I feel they could have added another character class called maybe "Infantry" class in game, with much better integration with EVE, without expanding to the console market.

In the end, $$ rules everything, though I feel they would have captured a larger chunk of the market releasing on both Console and PC, like Fallout 3 did.

think..

Console player vs. pc player(kb/mouse) = pc player could run in circles around the console player..

A pc player would have too much advantage when it comes to aiming/navigating.

This hasn't stopped them from making FPS games which allow PC vs Console before.

There's a mental block in the console player mind that won't allow them to admit another player is better than them. So even when an opponent has a major advantage they refuse to admit it, and instead hurl insults and question the persons sexuality.

Long story short, console kids will be lining up for DUST like lambs to the slaughter even if they're up against PC users.

Why?
You run a market size calculation and factor in player behavior.

You release it on PC and you cannibalize Eve. Eve players abandon Eve to play Dust. You end up with a small total increase in membership.

You release it on console and you attract a completely new player base. Many Eve players stick with Eve simply because they're not going to go buy consoles. All this talk about boycotting Dust is EXACTLY what CCP wants.

Then you attract a completely new player base taken from Halo or Call of Duty or any one of those other games. And you end up with a much larger total increase in membership.

Plus releasing on console gets you new marketing partners. Sony or Microsoft now have a vested interest in pushing Eve out to their players to drive console sales. They'll often put marketing dollars behind something like this.

Finally, when new players join they don't want them to immediately get trounced by experienced Eve players. They want the newbies to build their own corps and grow organically without the classic Eve griefers beating the crap out of them as soon as they walk in the door.

It only seems that way because you don't develop software for a living.

Each platform adds quite a bit of effort, complexity and cost. So it isn't a situation of them waving their hands and "poof" there's a PC version too.

XBox360 and PS3 are easier and cheaper to develop for, because the hardware is locked down and the control schemes are identical. A PC would require a significantly different code base (MS dropped the XBox is just like PC!" thing when they released the 360).

Meh, they will be throwing in a very different playerbase into the mix to effect game play for the older adult crowd that make up most of EVE. My fear is it will drag the community down to WoW levels of stupidity like Barrens chat back in Azeroth. Just something to think about.

Only time will tell if they stick to console only. I feel they will develop a PC version though.
