What the hell happens when the console gaming peasants get bored of DUST and leave to play other things?

Free PC version?

also SKY IS FALLING

Are you kidding me? Dust is going to be so immersive that people will totally stop playing Eve and focus entirely on playing dust.

Didn't you know?

Console games certainly don't have the lifespan PC games or a PC MMO has.

Dust will at most last a couple years. Want to gamble EVE on that? Stupid.

And this, sir, is why is the worst idea to release the game ONLY for consoles.

Persistent & consoles don't much well. FOTM is the way things go on consoles and most of their playerbase has the attention span of a 2-year old.

In contrary, there still is people playing CS after so many years. CCP is nuts, tbh.

Exactly. That's why I think it's not altogether a bad idea to release the ground game on consoles, but to leave the PC out of it altogether is stupid.

way too early for speculation, but i can envision it happening as such...

As DUST playership drops in its waning years, you will see a scarcity in merc units. THis will increase the cost of said units, and their use in EvE will also drop off. The merc warfare seems to be a two sided battle, like all things in eve, so while their use drops for offense, it will probably drop for defense as well. Planet interaction will drop off as well, as fewer would be conquerable, and you will end up with a system that pretty much just ignores planets... (like today)... hardly game ending. Alternative paths here are if DUST goes through as much improvement as EvE has... this would lead to a higher number of retained players.. also, sequel style game versions, branching it to newer generation consoles will renew it's use in EvE... either way, the freeform nature of eve is such that no matter what happens, the game (and playerbase) can easily adapt...

Couple of years? Thats pretty optimistic, make it a couple of months at best.

But yea, calm down already, its not like they gonna trash their flagship thats promising revenue for years to come for a console game that has a life expectancy of maybe half a year.

Yes, this is exactly what they are risking.

Not only that, unlike SOE, they are risking the existence of CCP on this. CCP=EVE.

If EVE failcascades ala SWG did with the NGE, they are as bankrupt as the rest of Iceland within months.

I hope 3 years of development are well worth it. I don't know the revenues, but really, wtf!?

I guess it will be rather easy to port, ports ar ehorrible but better than nothing... so when the game has died in consoles they will release it for PC I hope.

I see controlling planets and such more of a tiny boost to Sov and maybe some bonuses to the alliance o the winner.

While this is a poplar assumption (in the press and marketing), given the backlash you get when someone shuts down a server that supports a console game, I am not sure how true it is anymore. As console games have increased in complexity over the years they have had a growing number of people who want to keep playing them and get annoyed when they are told that support is dropped for the 'next thing'.
