what I mean is,

suppose I run missions for Amarr, over and over to the point where I have very high standings with various Amarr NPC's.

However, I also want to fly around free from attack in empire (at least apart from player ships trying to suicide me, etc). This is because I want to sell my mission goods at times in Jita, other times in Hek, in Amarr, Rens, etc.

Will training up skills like diplomacy and connections to V prevent, say, the Minmatar faction from attacking me no matter how many amarr missions i run?

If not, do some hardcore mission runners stagger their missions to offset this? For example, run amarr missions... but then before your standings with amarr get too high, run minmatar missions for a while. This way the difference in your standings between racial factions at any given time is not too disparate.

this seems like an issue for me because standings with various NPC's can just keep getting higher ( or does it level off at 10 points per NPC?), whereas the social skills that are meant to offset the hatred of other NPC's to you has a cap on number of skills + achievable level ( 5 )

please advise, thanks

Gallente and Minmatar Navy will attack you if you enter their space and have -5.00 standing or worse.

Only Diplomacy will help against negative standing, 0.6 per skill level iirc.
So with Diplomacy V you can let them drop to -7.99, and still go to Rens and Dodixie :)

Minmatar's standing with Amarr is -5.00. From what I remember, you can't drop below that number due to derived standings from storyline missions. Shooting Minmatar NPCs in missions will still drop your standings though.

Missions for Amarr/Caldari alone wont let your Minmatar/Gallente Standing fall below -5. Shooting their Ships/Structures will bring you eventually all the way down to -10, meaning -6 effective Standing with Diplomacy lvl5. Dplomacy adds 4% to the Difference between +10 and your base Standing if it's below 0.
So, just train Diplomacy if you're not to deep below -5 already and dont ever accept Missions against Factions(with own Navy) in which Space you'd like to travel.
And better dont run Missions for both 'Sides' - the higher you get, the more you'll lose this way.
Example: Minmatar -2; Amarr +5; Storyline for Minmatar does give 8% increase with Minmatar, you get (10-(-2))*8%=+0,96, Amarr Standing Change: (-10-5)*8%*0,5=-0,6.

This!

Don't kill empire faction NPC's and you want' need to worry.

ok so I'm trying, as a new player (who wants to run missions galore, but does not want any faction npc's attacking him in empire so he can fly free), to digest what has been recommended here:

What I gather is the following

1) Get diplomacy to V

2) When in missions, don't shoot any structures you don't need to (so for example I should blow up a pleasure hub to get the girl/cargo, but not random structures in the spawned space after my mission is already cleared(

3)Don't shoot faction ships (what does this mean exactly? Sorry but at this point I still freak out and shoot anything red that agresses me, in a mission or on the odd ratting occasion. Am I supposed to just take the damage off of some ships and complete the mission with them still alive, for the sake of standings?

4)Don't run missions for both sides, because after the math is done you are diluting your gains with any one side (my idea was that at least the gap in standings between two could be minimized this way, so as you approach a positive 10 standing with an Amarr NPC there is not an excessive disparity with your gains with minmatar - i just didn't want to shoot myself in the foot and make it so i could never do missions with an opposing race again, or that I could never fly in their space).

and if i do all this, i can fly into any race's trade hub without factions shooting at me, even if i grind missions that are with a cluster of amarr NPC's?

thanks in advance for clarification. fairly new to the game here

When you are offered any mission (including storylines):

- If you see a Gallente icon, DECLINE THE MISSION
- If you see a Caldari icon, DECLINE THE MISSION
- If you see a Minmatar icon, DECLINE THE MISSION
- If you see a Amarr icon, DECLINE THE MISSION

It really isn't tough.

Advanced students will then learn that shooting the faction allies is also to be avoided. They will right-click and look at the info to see the standings of those they are being asked to shoot at BEFORE accepting the mission.

Stick to killing NPC pirate factions like: Sanshas, Blood Raiders, Guristas, Mercenaries, Angel Cartel, Serpentis, etc.

Inter-Faction Relationships

This is the best advice in this thread. Being locked out of half of empire space due to your ship-killing is a very, very bad idea. Besides, there's better things to train to level 5 than diplomacy, don't get there in the first place!
